Thank you for this lesson, Lisa. As a bastrombonist this is very helpful for me as well. However, one of the main lessons that are teached to bastrombonists is "to play pedal notes", long and low, to develop the relaxation in your embouchure necessary for those notes deep down the scale. I've experienced that it has a side effect in that it also supports my high register; the more relaxed my embouchure gets in the lower register, the more capable I become at playing in the high register. I've got two questions on this particular concept: Do you've got any explanation about why an exercise in the very low range supports one's high register? And secondly, is this something that you know is used by tenor trombonists as well to improve their sound in the higher register? Thanks in advance! Best, Paul

@@LisaLizTrombone That's a tough question! I used to play the trombone, so I agree it's wonderful when the tune flows easily from the instrument. My favorite flex was playing Spain, which took me a while to learn well, but then we get compared to Watrous. My favorite song to perform was Lush Life, but it's not a big crowd favorite. The blues came easiest to me for solos, so anything bluesy by Miles like All Blues got me excited to play. My favorite waltz to play was Some Day My Prince Will Come, even though I wasn't looking for a prince. You can really get all kinds of colors and textures from those changes. Try that last one if you're looking for something different.
