The One Indoor Plant That Screams IRISH!
Here's one indoor plant you MUST have if you want that Irish feeling in you're home for St. Patty's day and beyond. It's a plant that most people probably haven't heard of. After all, most of us don't visit nurseries during March but if you did, you'd probably discover it.
It's super-easy to care for, needing very little care except watering and is so cute once you see it, you'll want to run out and get it.
And we've even included some Irish music to get you in the mood.

I'm allergic to poison ivy, cats, dogs, pollen, grass, etc. I said fck that. I owned a cat half its life span, I'm on dog number 4 all short hair which helps, and I work construction weed wacking acres at a time, I mow my yard ar least once a week. It's June 27 2024 and yes I had to check what year it is. I grow fruit veg nuts flowers every spring to fall. I have rash all up my arms right now. I'll voluntarily get poison ivy every year till I over cone it or die

I hate the stuff too and it's freaking EVERYWHERE nowadays, but that's because it thrives near human disruption of ecosystems. I saw a theory that the reason it evolved to hurt us is because it's meant to be a protector for ecosystems. Where is grows, we don't go, therefore the ecosystem there can thrive undisturbed.

That is how I do it, except I use narrow bags like the ones used to protect newspapers from the rain, or the ones that celery comes in. They are much easier to keep from flopping around. (I canceled my newspaper subscription 3 years ago and still have an ample supply of the bags!) I always tie the end of the bag closed so no one will accidentally touch any part of the P.I., and to deny it any chance to re-root. Also, if a P.I. vine is very long, I repeatedly grab a little more and a little more within the bag, folding the vine back and forth against a clear patch of ground, till I have a manageable piece. Doing this often gathers the bag up agains the P.I., so I then take a second bag to put around it. When I have a large patch to clear, I wear long sleeves, and long pants tucked into my socks, and when It's growing up trees II wear safety goggles. To wash down after contact, I use TecNu, but if that's not available, any liquid soap works almost as well. Just be sure to rinse off with cold water, so your pores don't open up and let the oil into your skin.

Most people who get a poison ivy rash, get it from not thoroughly washing themselves off after contact with the plant. Periodically washing yourself off as you come in contact with the plant helps a lot. Saw a great video about it here on CZcams.

Me too. I bought disposable painter's coveralls, heavy-duty long gloves, and dedicated an old pair of rubber boots so I am completely covered. Then I pull roots and clip leaves with a dedicated set of pruners. I don't wear the gear into the house and wash my hands after just in case. It's a hassle but it's worked so far and I'm slowly cutting/pulling the ivy back.

These look good but can it be controlled? My neighbor planted a plant like this, and it took over my back yard and is now covering 3 houses past mine. I pulled it up for 2 years until I gave up. Now it is impossible to get rid of and now have no grass and just mow it.

That's nice for itty bitty little sprouts. What about 300 lb whale sized poison ivy bushes that completely engulf a 60 ft pine tree? The root connection to the ground is 15 inches in diameter.

@@markbaker5167 I guess you didn't read my first comment. This is a MASSIVE poison ivy plant. Grown in the muggy, overbearing Alabama heat of the last 12 years. The trunk is the size of my thigh. I've tried all the "natural" methods like vinegar, salt, etc. I've tried roundup, and even industrial grade glyphosate which is about 70 times stronger than roundup. It drank all this like a breakfast shake and kept on going.

Short-lived and ephemeral are TWO different things. Short-lived concerns the WHOLE LIFE of the plant, not only in one season (like aquilegias that disappear after 2 or 3 years). Besides , if grown in shade and with enough water, the bleeding hearts can keep foliage throughout the most of the season. So NOT ephemeral by definition at ALL! Example of ephemeral: sanguinaria (keep flowers for like 2 or 3 days)

There's a 25 foot Yew tree in the middle shading the failing side more. The hedge has never been pruned or fertilized.. I'm on Long Island in a real energetic growth time of the spring.. Local nursuries here do not have Hyacinth plants, as such. (Canton, Georgia). They have lots of other things. Last year someone of the Master Gardening classes…..gave me a pkg of the seeds. One came up really early. But I have heard that I must continue to nurture the seeds….so I have continued them in jiffy pots….on top of heat mats with plastic lid cover(like a mini-greenhouse). Some say those seeds need long time to….come up. So I will continue…..on and on. Ahna. Atlanta area, Georgia

My husband’s grandma had white bleeding hearts. Little white pillowy hearts with a touch of a deep fuschia pink color. I have looked in specialty nurseries, garden stores and on line. She passed away 7 years ago and here house has been torn down and now apartments. It was built in 1890. Chicken coup, Barn …everything gone to mass ugly apartments. I would have loved to dig them up along with a whole bunch of others. I also miss the Chinese lantern plant that bloomed every fall… beautiful little orange puffed lanterns on lime green stems. That would have been my dream place to live…reminds me of a cross between little house on the prairie and scenes out of the dukes of hazard. I could never get use to city life. I love country life and going up and down the creek listening to the bull frogs and when I was a kid my brothers and I would each grab a 5 gallon pail and see who could catch the most Gardner snakes or lizards. I also miss getting up in the morning picking huckleberries and making huckleberry pancakes or my dad would pick strawberries and make us strawberry shortcake. I guess these memories flood my mind seeing some of your property and not knowing how much longer I have with my dad. He is terminally ill. He didn’t know his well water was full of arsenic. He was diagnosed with bladder cancer and a year later my mom was diagnosed with bladder cancer which raised a concern with their doctor who told them he thought they needed to get their water checked. Sure enough extreme levels of arsenic and other heavy metals. They lived there over 40 years and my dad never thought to have it tested since the water tasted fine. So I don’t share this for pity but for awareness. If your on a well have your water tested regularly. Keep your family safe, I hate that my parents spend more time in the hospital than the do it home. I don’t like seeing them in pain all the time. Dads had two heart attacks, moms blind now. And I am feeling like I don’t know what to do to comfort them. Many of you know what it is like to take care of a frail loved one. I ask for Christians to pray in Jesus name to comfort them. They believe in Jesus and they have a small church family. I think it’s beautiful they visit them in the hospital, call and check on them. Again, please get your water tested regularly if you’re on a well. Positively; In Jesus’ name, Amen.
