This album is better in context of when it was released. 12 Bar Bruise was technically their first album, and it is ROUGH. Super simple songs, very lofi recording quality, lots of harsh noise, and very repetitive. Float Along is their second “proper” album (their true second album - Eyes Like the Sky - is really weird and more like a side quest than a main album), and Float Along is a huge step forward. While it still sounds pretty rough and raw now, it’s actually a pretty amazing record for how early it was released. If you had only heard their first album, this one would blow your mind!

Yeah early King Gizz was big into the harsh noises and feedback. If you watch really early live performances, Stu would just get on an echo pedal and make crazy squealing noises for way too long. Not sure why he thought anybody would want to hear that lol. I’m glad it’s something they grew out of

This is one of my favorite songs on the album. I got into this album pretty early into my King Gizz journey last year, but thats because I listened in chronological order, and I didn't really care about the mixing and mastering too much as long as I liked the songs. In fact, the noisiness of some of these songs is why I like them, this album was kind of my introduction to noise music as a whole. I think the noisiness works especially well on the studio version of Head On/Pill. I agree that the mixing and mastering of this album isnt the best. Parts of the album just don't sound the best I think they could. For example, Let Me Mend The Past should've had so much more bass. Next up is 30 Past 7, whuch was released as a single on July 30th, 7/30, or 30/7 for non-Americans. It's probably one of the best sounding songs on the album.

A lot of their influences have that same lo-fi "smushed" sound, especially the 60s garage stuff and Ohsees. I dig it personally and think clean production would take the entire soul out of music like this

This song is mostly about the problems of the with our medical, music, and consumer industries. You are no dummy! We hear his music over and over again. You're hearing it for the 1st time and I remember you saying that lyrics aren't what you initially process in a song.

This one's an absolute favourite of mine. Love the layers of messages, love the performance aspect, love the vocals, ADORE the Bulgarian choir sample in the beat. Stem cell treatments did help Ren, once he was accurately diagnosed and found out that some people with Lyme were responding well to the procedures. But not everyone sees benefit (because Lyme and its complications fuck each person up a little differently so sometimes the damage it's done is something that doesn't respond, I guess? and I think there are unfortunately even people for whom the stem cell treatments worsen their condition, tho I don't understand the mechanism/I might be wrong). The stem cell lyric in this track is "Stem cell poster boy" because the stem cell treatment *worked* for him - he's kinda like a "model patient" case in that it helped restore him to some semblance of functional life. But I guess maybe he has some resentment about that (being held up as an exemplary case) when it *isn't* a solution for so many other people? In the videos where he's filmed himself reading the story of his illness (on his Ren Makes Stuff channel), when he talks about the doctor at that clinic, he calls him an angel (like he also does in the track he released in conjunction with the readings, "Troubles"). But at the same time, he's also very clear that the clinic later ran into problems and controversy, and that the very expensive treatments (which the doctor pro-bono'd for Ren if he agreed to blog about his experiences at the clinic - Ren was a somewhat-known chronic illness blogger within the ME/Lyme/etc online community, I guess?) didn't help everybody and some people felt misled or conned. I think to this day, the jury is out on the efficacy of it, science-wise. But there's no doubt that it brought Ren back to the land of the mostly-living, even though he still had (and still has) significant issues.

11:40 - You think someone who gets a billion $ has done say a MILLION times as much work as someone who has managed to do 2 jobs while raising kids and looking after a sick parent but only saved $1000? The money people accumulate is from their own labour - up to a point. Then capitalism is about exploiting the labour of others to make wealth for yourself. That might be employing people and taking profit out of the business (that’s the result of other people’s labour), or it could be from gambling on the market and getting lucky (that’s just winning a lottery in which rich people bet the accumulated labour they’ve collected from others), or you inherit it, or you create something novel that delivers benefits to others and they give you the accumulated labour they had collected as a thank you. But most people work about the same amount - but that isn’t related to how much wealth they accumulate. Also, people who accumulate a LOT of wealth are benefiting from the infrastructure and services that are paid for by taxes - so they should be paying their “fair share” back - however the more wealth people have, the LESS proportion of it they pay back. Think of Trump who boasted that he hadn’t paid ANY tax for many years and he said anyone who pays tax is stupid. Compare that to people who have to pay their taxes every year, who pay sales taxes and so on as a much greater proportion of what they earn. If people were really rewarded for the work they do then many people doing hard manual labour or acting as careers or nurses etc would be the ones actually getting the most, while someone who’s a CEO who has to show up to a meeting 3 times a year would probably live in poverty as they do very little actual work.
