How do we heal broken wing bones in raptors?
A large percentage of raptors admitted to rehabilitation centers worldwide have sustained traumatic fractures of their long bones. Bird bones are challenging to work with because of their thin, brittle walls, curvatures, and lack of solid structure in their interior.
For the first 20 years at The Raptor Center (TRC), intramedullary pins (pins placed into the “hollow” cavities of bird bones) or external fixators often accompanied by some form of splinting, were the usual methods used to repair avian fractures. Success was had in some cases, but failures were all too frequent.
In the early 1990s, the external fixator was re-imagined by a group of private small animal orthopedic surgeons. It was revolutionary and forever changed the way orthopedic surgery was conducted and trained at TRC.
Originally designed for small domestic animals, the “tie-in” fixator needed considerable modification to be utilized effectively in birds. This idea was envisioned at TRC, “tying” the external fixator components to an intramedullary pin using a bar made of heated flexible acrylic that would harden when cooled. This yielded an incredibly robust, durable, and well-tolerated mode of fixation.
The barred owl in this video was admitted in November of 2023 with a right ulna (wing) fracture. With the support of TRC’s expert veterinarians, Dr. Kendall, our Partners 4 Wildlife veterinary intern, skillfully performed the life saving “tie-in” fixator surgery.
In the postoperative radiographs (near the end of the video), you can observe the pins in place, providing a closer look at the internal workings of the healing process. After time to heal and regain strength, this barred owl was released in February.

Just ahead of the start of our annual Baby Shower fundraiser, The Raptor Center received a call about two baby great horned owls (owlets) which had been on the ground of the finder's backyard since the night before. One of our expert baby volunteers arrived on the scene soon after to assess the situation. About 30 feet above, mom and dad were still in the nest with a third owlet and, based on a...

The Raptor Center’s hospital received this great horned owlet with a broken leg nearly beyond repair. Early nestling raptor's long bones can grow as fast as 0.5 inch in length in 3 days! Because baby bones are still developing, we cannot use the same fracture repair techniques as we can in fully grown raptors with well developed bone structures. with expert skill, our veterinarians placed an in...
Eagles Set Free After Months In Care

11 juvenile bald eagles, some in our care since the summer, were released back into the wild where they most belong. After weeks of unseasonably warm weather, Minnesota’s lakes and rivers are finally freezing over and leaving openings in the ice that act as bald eagle fishing holes, the ideal conditions for young eagle releases. Numerous bald eagles of all ages are gathering in groups, some as ...
