Tears in my eyes at 0:10. I know exactly where that is. That’s behind the original telephone company building (Circa 1975) on the south side of Storrs Street. I grew up a few blocks away from that yard. My dad would frequently bring me down to the tracks to watch the trains. One day without warning, my father just struck up a conversation with some B&M employees and they offered us a tour of their caboose. I remember being allowed to climb up and look out the top window. There were employees inside smoking and playing cards over a wooden board which I would learn many years later was a game called cribbage. My dad was all sorts of fuc*ed up from Vietnam but he had a few shining moments as a father. This was one of his better days. I would have been five years old. That caboose would eventually be put-to-rest about three hundred yards south of that spot in the grass next to the tracks. There, it remained, well into the mid 80’s deteriorating and eventually dying an undignified death after collapsing into two pieces. I can’t thank you enough for posting this. Cheers from Boston ☘️

I moved to NH in 1978, i remember how busy that rail yard was. They used to run up the Locomotives from the Bow Coal train there to refuel and crew change.

I was able to ride the old blue B&M Engine when I was a kid at our family lumber yard in Western Mass and caboose too will never forget it the engineer even let me run the controls and blow the massive air horn I was all of 8 yo back in the 70s.

Thank you for sharing. I used to watch the trains alot on the bank from my house in Enfield, N.H. by " The Baltic Mill". I saw a few commuter trains go by at times. Then freight trains. Cool to watch, I was fascinated. The last train I saw go by was " The Spirit of 76" in 1976. I believe the rails were taken up in 1977. I would like to know if this line from Boscawen, N.H. to White River Jct, Vermont would be For Sale, and what the price would be? Just curious. I would love to hit the lottery big and buy this whole line. Turn it into a scenic railway, and haul freight too! fix up the infrastructure, bridges, crossings, signals, side rails for storage. I know, I can hear it. Your dreaming! I'm trying. This is a nice line, especially going around Mascoma Lake.

Good memories , it's mostly gone now, all the rail industry there used to be here, my local yard growing up in the 1960s-70s was Castle Hill in Salem,MA. 6 Swicthing jobs, locals and 3 main frieghts and Hundreds of cars a week to Peabody, Lynn, Salem, Beverly, Swampscott Quarry, Danvers, Topsfield, Newburyport, Gloucester ... It's all gone but one shipper in Peabody !!!

Yes, yes. I live in the Dartmouth/Lake Sunapee region of NH. Familiar with that line, now know as "The Northern Rail Trail". Have walked the rail trail in Lebanon, NH. Every time I do, I stop for just a second and try to imagine what was. Looked at what was the ROW of the Concord Claremont Railroad. Go to Concord, NH every how and then and pass by a shopping center that was the Concord, NH railroad station. The whole thing is just sad.

  • @merrimacksacoproductions4497

What I wouldn't give to be able to go back and see that sight, nowadays, you'd be considered lucky to see a couple trains a week, and the yard? Barely exists anymore, so much of those lines are gone, heck, they just abandoned the Horseshoe Pond stretch of tracks, the Penacook line is overgrown and torn up in some areas.... What once was....

You're not alone- I live in a town next to Amherst Mass, where the B&M Norwattuck line is another converted rail to trail project by the DCR. They not only didn't preserve history, but even went out of their way to destroy it. At least the old B&M line between Northfield Ma and Brattleboro VT that runs over to New Hampshire still has telegraph poles- around my area, there's practically nothing left to find. Very sad.

Those B30-7As sound great love the glug glug glug sound as they throttle up, the sound kinda reminds me of the Alco 251B prime movers. Those hopper cars look like the ex-Rock Island cars that Mt. Tom station used to get when I worked there several years ago for NU.

Thank you for sharing. I sure miss the old fallen flags we can see in this video. The Northern Line I think was foolishly allowed to rot. Typical of New Hampshire, and sadly the way things seem to go up there. I too hate to think this is only good for snow mobiles today. We can only hope that someone will wake up some day and see the potential for this route again.

Great to see how it is still being used - I grew up hearing about it as a kid, but Dad had never seen it. He was a bit of a history buff, and being a Railroad man, railroad history was even better! He was thrilled - wish he was still around to know it was "fixed up" now!

Awesome! That is a LONG freight! I used to have "connections" to someone from around there - long story - and took my Dad to see the East end - it seemed closed. That was about 15 yrs ago or so. Guess they were lowering the roadbed? I also remember seeing hundreds of old box cars lined up along the river, was told they were being scrapped or stored there. You live around those parts? Nice video - thanks for posting!!
