Great content. Though I see it as talking about melodic phrasing, not melody. I would love to see a video specifically about MELODY. For example, how did The Beatles write such amazing melodies? What makes the difference between ok or good melodies and the incredibly beautiful melodies of The Beatles?

You come up with such excellent content such as this. Have you, or do you intend to, expand on this particular video further? Perhaps write a full song and take us along with you while you choose the harmony etc? I know it's asking a lot but it would be fantastic to see and follow.

Great video, great vibe! The only other thing I wanted to write is: when you play those barre chords (F♯m etc.), I think you should try to not overextend your finger joints. I heard that that can cause problems in the long run... That would be a disaster! ... and now I will hit that subscribe button...

The Beatles were my first big inspiration as a kid and got me into songwriting. After watching this I feel like I understand a new level of how they impacted my foundation as an artist… I always liked how Lennon’s songwriting had an edge no matter how mellow, but as a kid I was never focused on analyzing lyrics in ab ab etc type of way. Somehow tho I still use some of these patterns almost instinctively at times.

My talent is in writing little ditties daily or very simple songs for fun and I never in a million years would have thought I would have a fully produced song to put on streaming services, but TORS made that impossibility possible for me. ✨ They even look my roughly sketched song on ukulele to a whole new level and it was easy and magical. Could you make a video on writing lyrics first and then going to music?Cause' now I'm used to writing lyrics first and then going with the music. But, I found out that it isn't really helping out with my music part. I struggle to change this habit now. And also vice-versa. I can easily make melodies but then struggle to write lyrics for that. It would be very helpful if you guys could make videos on the above - starting with the music and then to lyrics and vice-versa. Thank you!

universality is found in specificity. If you set out looking to be universal or general, you’ll miss it. Honesty over cleverness always wins. I mostly agree with you though on other things.

I’ve always been great at making up Melodie’s & hooks as long as I can remember. I’d always get in trouble as a kid in school and make class mates laugh with daft songs I’d write. And when I was in a bad as a bass player I’d come to the band with a melody and we would jam it and each musician would come up with their thing till we had a song. My problem has always been joining parts together and writing serious lyrics. I got devices, SD cards etc full of Melodie’s would love to have the skills to develop them into full songs. Thanks for all your advice.

This is sort of ridiculous. Why should every song’s lyrics be literal and clear with an obvious blatant message? Sure sometimes they can be that way but they don’t have to be. You’re talking about Lennon, so was the meaning of line “I am the walrus, goo goo gjoob” clear to you? I think Lennon would be the first one to tell you that ambiguity and mystery can be just as interesting and powerful as a clear well stated message. And I’m positive Bob Dylan would agree, and he was a pretty good songwriter, right? There were many of his lyrics, especially in the 60s that were so surreal you couldn’t be sure what the hell he was talking about but they were still beautiful. Careful prescribing rules for songwriting, I think the best ones throughout history have sort of not given a shit about most of the rules and that’s what made them exciting.

I’ve been writing songs for years and I’ve found consistently that the very best stuff I write almost always happens organically. I don’t really have to put too much thought into it and the song practically writes itself. As cliche as it sounds I’ve found this to be true for me.

This isn't really great advice. Ambiguity is part of lots of great poetry and songs, including Beatles songs, e.g., "She Said," which is not totally clear. It's actually not even about a woman, it's about Peter Fonda. "Imagine" is quite fake. Yoko Ono was the 13th-richest woman in America when Lennon died.
