    I see exactly why it's hard for you to get good touch on the ball: You're gripped up too high on the handle. You can't allow the 'crotch' between your thumb and index finger to touch the wing of the blade. Always make sure there's a gap there. Doing this will also allow you to get more racket head speed overall. And more racket head speed means more spin (Unless you make an insanely fat contact, like on a smash, of course). From what I see, you are always gripped up way too high and especially wayyyyy too tight. It's all about relaxing the WRIST. When you do this, it will be very apparent that you are doing so because your grip will be so loose. It may be difficult to learn how to relax the wrist throughout your shots. But, just remember to relax your fingers because they control the relaxation of the wrist. When you're squeezing your fingers even a little bit, your wrist will be tight, not relaxed. So, you have to stop squeezing your fingers. You only need to squeeze them to stop your follow-through. But, that's a very quick squeeze and release because you only have to squeeze with a little pressure for only a millisecond and your swing will stop. That illustrates how much tightening the wrist effects your shot, and it illustrates how little pressure is needed to slow your entire shot up. It may take a while to get this, but you must stay relaxed in the wrist even during your hardest shots. That's one of the things that separates the amateur shots from the professional shots. And if you REALLY want to make sure you get maximum brush and maximum spin and maximum feeling from your shots, then play with an inner-ALC blade and use the DHS Hurricane 3 NEO (either Provincial, or National) blue sponge version in 39 degrees hardness on your forehand. And have a look at the DHS Hurricane Long 5 blade. Look at the style of FL handle it is. THAT is the best shakehands handle for spin on the forehand, hands down. It's also an inner-ALC blade with an oversized head. Both of these attributes are ones that will also help increase your feeling and your touch.

    Table Tennis is like a few other sports where you quickly lose form when you don't play for just a week or two (when you're an amateur). When you're at pro level, it takes about a month of not playing for your form to fall off pro level. But, when you're an amateur, it also takes less time to get back to where you were than it does for a pro. So, I guess that's a consolation prize

    Why you back up too far against underspin? Here's why: Because your brain hasn't noticed that topspin balls and underspin balls kick differently to where the underspin balls do not kick as far or as high. And clearly, your mind is only trained to anticipate topspin balls. Your mind needs to understand that underspin kicks shorter and lower. And you must tell your mind to "ALWAYS MOVE IN AGAINST UNDERSPIN". And yes, you need to practice with a chopper and nothing else for a week or 2 straight until you understand that you must move in on underspin, as well as until you begin to understand the kicking of underspin.

    Relax the WRIST the entire way through the shot and then, squeeze the fingers to stop on the follow-through. The wrist is the KEY thing to focus on, not the rest of the arm.

    Sieht gut aus, bin gespannt wie du mit deiner langen RH Angabe in den Matches spielen wirst, kann mir gut vorstellen das einige da zu zögerlich mit umgehen und dir leichte Block/Konterbälle in deine RH zurückspielen, aber ich kenne auch viele gerade ab Bezirksebene die sowas direkt feste ziehen oder durchballern so dass du es schwer hast damit dann gut ins Spiel zu kommen wenn du da direkt in der Defensive bist oder den Ball gar nicht mehr bekommst, da kommts dann eher auf die Quote an. Generell will man ja ab einem gewissen Level alle langen Angaben direkt relativ feste angreifen um dem Gegner keinen leichten 3rd Ball zu geben und eine Angabe ohne die nicht allzuschwer zu lesen ist und wenn sie noch gerade d.h. ohne viel Seitenschnitt der es ggf. krum und unangenehm macht ist eigentlich nicht so schwer durchzuziehen. Mich wundert das dein letzter Spielpartner da dann immer passiver geworden ist anstatt zu üben da feste drauf zu gehen.

      Hey, ja bin gespannt. Auf dem Turnier das ich gerade gespielt habe konnte ich wieder durchgehend die Angabe nutzen. Leider traue ich mich noch nicht ganz so wie im Training den 3. Ball zu attackieren aber Gelegenheit haben mir fast alle gegeben. Ich bin momentan schon dran die Platzierung mehr zu variieren, sowie den Spin. Bisher war es eher so das sogar Bezirks Oberliga Spieler im Training den Aufschlag eher ungefährlich zurück gebracht haben. Wie gesagt ich denke das Aufschlag System wird mit dem Level der receives wachsen 💪🏼

    Vom Anschauen der Übungen fällt es mir schwer zu glauben, dass du mit 1550 TTR kämpfst. Die Schlagausführung ist sauber, du stehst oft gut zum Ball. Ich glaube nicht, dass es an deiner grundsätzlichen Technik liegt. Vielleicht eher an der Fähigkeit, das Spiel zu lesen. Oder an einem fehlenden Spielsystem? Bei welchem TTR stehst du denn aktuell?

      Ja den reinen technischen skill habe ich denke ich jetzt Safe. Da ich aber noch nicht wirklich lange Spiele hängen die von dir genannten Bereiche, auch receives, spiel gegen “komische Stile” usw. noch etwas hinterher. Man könnte zusammenfassend sagen das es einfach noch an allgemeiner Erfahrung und Match Praxis fehlt. Oder gefehlt hat, seit kurzem merke ich das auch das besser wird. Im Training läuft es teilweise schon gegen höhere ttr Level gut. Ich hab jetzt aktuell 1430ttr allerdings weis ich noch nicht wie sich das Turnier von Samstag auswirkt bei dem ich 4/2 gespielt hab (bis 1600ttr Gruppe) kommendes Wochenende habe ich noch ein Turnier und 3 Summer Team Cup Matches. Leider war es in der Rückrunde hinten auch sehr ärgerlich oft nur ein Spiel zu haben. Kann es nicht erwarten endlich weiter vorne zu spielen. Mal sehen wie das Wochenende läuft 😊

    looking better and better interesting that you do just one serve for a whole game/day/week, i guess its good to train the 3rd ball and follow up well however in a real match u need to vary the spin and also ur serves well so ur oponent can never adapt, else its just a one-trick-pony and regardless how much spin u can put in there its usually pretty easy to handle once the oponent adapts to it also keep in mind like the chineese headcoach said: 1 service error per match is good, it shows that u try to do good serves and not just go the lazy save route where ur serves will be much less dangerous

      I keep doing the same serve now for about 4 weeks. Also during all my matches and it works just super well. Even players way higher level than me have trouble to adapt. I know all receives and have answers ready. I am sure that this will keep working until I reach a much higher level and play higher leagues/tournaments. Even the people I train with every day can’t adjust because 1. the serve gets better and better 2. my 3rd balls get better. That being said I already started to adjust placement and spin. My goal is a super solid system around this serve plus it’s variations. Later on I’ll work on the next one to have two solid systems working together. But for now this is extremely helpful and feels almost like cheating 😅

      @@limittless. thats the nature of doing long fast (kicker) serves to setup an easy 3rd ball attack, but that will not work against good opponents for long and at least in my region players at 1500+ usually attack most long serves and some of them really hard as well and once those get used to urs u will just feed them easy attacks which u can hardly block anymore. i have a main serve (reverse pendulum) wich i can do anywhere long/short with strong backspin/side/upspin variations and it works well against some opponents and not that well against others, where i will mainly do pendulum instead or even a high toss where its hard to read how much back/spin i put into getting easy high balls its good to have a well trained foundation but u will be thrown completely off when u play someone who just shoots those servers easily (or recieve it too well in any other way) making u lose ur advantage of ur serve

    Hey, great video as always. Just a small advice on your forehand technique. The left arm/hand is something many people don't pay much attention to. Watch your left arm on your forehand topspin especially in the first section of the video when you try to add more body rotation. Your left hands often ends up in front of or on the right side of your torso. This effectively blocks some of your body rotation. Try to let your left hand finish at the left side of your torso, close to or next to your left hip. This will automatically force your left elbow back and results in much more body rotation. You can try this out even without a racket and ball. The effects should be noticeable immediately. On the topic if jumping back on the forehand opener. This is usually a sign of being "scared" of the ball and the lack of confidence in your stroke. It's a natural way of reducing the power of your own shot. But this is bad habit and will lead to inconsistencies when you play at a higher level in the future. There balls have a lower margin of error and jumping back is a very unstable way to move, leading to inconsistencies. Instead try to be as static as possible (at least in the beginning) when starting your stroke. At first this will probably feel very strange, because all the power from your body weight will be applied to the ball, causing it to be faster and spinnier. You'll probably make a lot of mistakes first, but once you'll get the hang of it, the quality of your shots should improve a lot. Otherwise great improvements on your technique, keep going 👍 Cheers

      Thx man, yeah clearly the jumping/stepping back is extra cautiousness. To counter that I try to force myself to play hart topspins in training now, just to make it a habit. The left arm thing, I noticed when i keep it closer to the body it´s way better. Sometimes it´s all over the place. Will try to keep the elbow back towards the left hip!

    Very interesting story brother. I also was a coach in martial arts - boxing, wrestling, bjj, mma - now i play mostly TT because of back injury but used to train everyday for decades. It is a very interesting sport and i can practice it for hours without my back hurting too much. Nice to meet you, and subscribe from me

      Wow dude that´s so awesome. Absolutely the same here, it is so much lighter on the body and I can train twice a day if i have the time and opportunity lol. I feel with a martial arts background we have a big advantage ;). Just needs time but we are used to grind, improve every little inch of technique. Work with systems and gameplans, never give up, deal with frustration... Welcome and thx for the sub brother!

      @@limittless. yep, totally agreed. Many people underestimated how complicated and technically hard martial arts are, tactically also. So they give you solid foundation. My first year I did six training per week - five coach private lessons plus some matches, five times a week service practice and one tournament. And that was the most jump in progress that older player such as I’m (I’m 35) was achieve in my coach carrier. And he has a lot of tt experience with a lot of pro/semi pro players, and also amateurs. Actually when I told him that I plan to be some kind of a player in a year - he just laughed - and was telling me, that I never will. But then slowly but surely he has to change his opinion about that. How much experience do you have overall in TT for now? Your technique looks stable and relaxed, I also like your legs and hip engaging. Always watching your video and finding something useful that I can use by myself. Appreciate your work and wish you a good luck in achieving your goals.

      @@SleepyMasterrr 6month when I started again just casually 1-2 times a week and now about a year of 5-7 times a week training and taking it serious. 28 years ago together with other sports I played tt in a club but nothing too crazy. I also plan on getting very far if my body allows. Sitting on the bench at a tournament right now. Won the first two and lost against a defender. The not so common playing styles give me a hard time still but I can feel it is just a matter of time as I simply do not get to play against them too often. So far my progress overall is pretty fast compared to what I see around me. If the body holds my longterm goal is pretty challenging but I am going for it anyways. I believe everything is possible 😊.

      @@limittless. just finished a tourney today too, winning one defender 3:0, losing to another, despite that I did against pips practice during weekly training. I lack such practice, against defenders and some awkward pips players needed a years more of experience to be more familiar with their “tricks” 😁 Everything is possible, believing in yourself and hard grind is huge part of success in any sport 💪🏼

      Hey Stefan, first the sort of statistical answer. Most players will never reach that level. Just check the average TTR level of players for examole in Germany and you´ll see that it is somewhere around 1230TTR. BUT most people think and train very suboptimal. This is because the amateur structures in most clubs are just not made for adults that want to improve like semi pros or pros want to. Almost everyone at the amateur club level just meets to warmup with a very useless routine and then they get bored and play sets. Only the very talented, smart people will get to a decent level like that. In my case I did the opposite once I started taking it seriously. I wanted the fastest way to improve, so I took my knowledge from Jiu Jitsu, where i reached a high level, and applied it to table tennis. Off course at one point a coach is needed as well. I can now hang with people up to 1600-1700TTR and cause serious troublel, sometimes even win. Took me about a year, if I don´t count the 6 months I was just playing for fun at the beginning with no goal or method. So the short answer to the question, you can get to a decent level faster than you think, BUT you need to optimize everything. I know it´s possible from my own experience, also from more and more people I train with that have the same success. Mathias and I we put together something cool, and we´ll launch it soon. We believe this will be a game changer and answers all the questions you have as a beginner that wants to get better quick in detail.

I'm also a former martial arts coach, who is "obsessed" with optimizing training, so I understand exactly what you are saying. So, do you dare to give an estimate as to how many hours of practice it will take to reach 1,550 for someone who trains in an optimal manner? Thanks again.

      @@stefanhansen5882 This is so hard to say bc as you know everyone is different. How talented are you, what´s your fitness level, how do you structure your sessions, training partners, real match practice, right equipment, correct basic technique... So just to throw a number around, I think 800-1000hrs can get you to 1400-1550 (btw I consider 1550 a very solid bluebelt which is the first color belt in BJJ) That´s why I made it my first goal. I also believe that this fundament is then really solid to improve further. I´ve seen people getting to world class level in 5 years, with everything perfect off course, top coach, talent, work ethic. Roughly 1,5-2yrs for reaching bluebelt (1550ttr haha) is what we were able to reproduce over and over again. But that was with like 8-10hrs of training a week or more. Atm I am obsessed with transfering my JJ knowledge to TT and it´s so much fun, also it seems to work better than first expected, off course also bc I have Mathias and his (world class) coaches to verify everything.

I like the idea of a BJJ blue belt in table tennis. 😆 And yes, you are of course right, that it all depends on many factors. I will try to get to 1,550 before the end of next year. 🎉

      Next year I’ll have to compete in the -1600 group 😅, my back is actually so much better than during my last 10 years in bjj. TT is the perfect sport for me these days 💪🏼. But off course there is some damage that is irreparable especially in my back. I do back and knee exercises every day

    No, mate, playing warm-up sets beforehand WILL NOT help you. Being cautious is not a physical problem, meaning that it won't matter how warmed up your body is. Being cautious is a MENTAL/EMOTIONAL PROBLEM. This means that you have to come in with a different mindset. You have to be sure in your heart that you will win and never have any doubts in your mind. On Wednesday, I was extremely tired going into my 3rd, and final competitive league match of the day. I had won my previous 2 matches (I'm on a very long unbeaten streak right now. My level is extremely high in the past 2 months, even for the highest level of play). But, I hadn't slept very well the night before, which is one of the worst things that can happen in this sport. Not many things will drop your level more than that. Anyway, I went down 2 sets to none in a best of 5 in that 3rd match. But, I am so insanely clutch because I have MENTAL and EMOTIONAL resilience and assuredness at all times. So, at the end of the second set I immediately said DIRECTLY and very seriously to my opponent "All right. That's enough of that. Here comes the big comeback.". I said it calmly and without any question in my heart. I got pissed off at myself and woke myself up just enough to start really making plays. Then, I came back and won 3 sets in a row to win the match. Sets 3 and 4 both went to multiple deuce points too. But, if I get to deuce, I simply am not losing. Period. Then, in set 5 I won 11-6 because I had defeated him MENTALLY and EMOTIONALLY, as he'd had multiple match points in sets 3 and 4, but he'd failed to capitalise on them (due to me ALWAYS bringing my best serve and receive game with my back against the wall and due to him very obviously being nervous and excited). I broke his heart by getting to a 5th set and I knew that I would just need to come out the gate strong with my serves and take my first 3 or 4 serve points while trying to make him make the mistakes that gave me each point. I knew that would crush his spirit and give me the opportunity to simply play solid and hold him off the rest of the way. And that's exactly what I did. The minute that I smelled fear on his end is when I began starting to make quick little movements while his serve toss was in the air, just as he began to toss it. I wanted him to catch me out of the corner of his eye looking as if I was about to pounce on every serve of his. It's very difficult to get good touch on your serves when you're nervous. So, doing that disrupted the quality of his serves and it also put him flat-footed on the 3rd ball because he was worried about what I was about to do and it made him late to get reads on my ball.

      Oh, and for the record: That was only my second day using a completely new blade and new backhand rubber too. It takes a few months to get used to a new blade, especially to compete at the level I'm at.

      I know exactly what you mean from martial arts competitions. But the thing is, placing sets brings me into this competitive mindset. In TT I am not as confident yet, because I know that there is so much room for improvement yet and my level is still low compared to good players. That being said I focus too much on my weaknesses and in match I am worried about them coming up. If I only focus on making the correct play and execute that as well as possible, not even caring about points, I play my absolute best. This is the mindset that helps me the most for now. Sometimes I have streaks in training matches where I can hang with much better players and sometimes I play as if I just started lol. The good streaks always happen if I am only focused on the right decisions and there is no result orientation. So that seems to be the absolute best mindset for me personally for now. I know I can play well, mistakes happen anyways, even more so when playing overly cautious. It’s better do go for it. Thanks for giving me your example 🙏🏼💪🏼 I’ll have a ton of matches next and the following week. Oh and yes I went to a tournament tired once and it was a total disaster costing me many points 😅.

      @@limittless. You MUST convince yourself that you're better than every opponent though. Plus, you ought to stop worrying about what the proper plays are and start worrying about simply disrupting your opponents. Think about WHAT disrupts them and play like that. Plus, you need to play with your foot on the pedal the whole way. Every receive, every serve, every 3rd or 4th ball, be trying to play with aggressive tactics without being careless. You're an attacker. If you're not in control of the attack/the game, then you're failing at your style.

    Nice run in the tourney, i gotta say thou i would enjoyed it more if u show the last points of a close set as well. Its a bit strange when u say u do too many easy mistakes and the set isnt going well while u only show the points u win and the viewer is thinking oh its going well what is he talking about.. Also as said b4 u should definitely put in TTR of ur oponents and ur current one afterwards, since the whole series is called Road to 1550 TTR and you leave us completely blind on that road. Also makes it less interesting to watch u play opponentes when we have no clue what level they are.

      I concur. I'm pretty sure he doesn't cut out the errors to look good, rather he selects the nice points (won or lost) to make it more appealing to the viewer. But I'm with you : as this series is about learning and improving, showing complete sets or at least sequences would be more fitting. As is, I often found myself thinking that he plays a 1600 TTR level already, comparing to the guys I play and every once in a while win, provided that the TTR scores reflect similar levels all over Germany. He lacks power in his forehand topspin, but for a 1550 TTR level he largely compensates it which his excellent backhand openings, topspins and punchblocks.

      @@jeanbalthazar8014 yeah at the beginning that was really my reason for only putting the interesting rally’s in the videos, just to make it worth watching. As I said that was already changed and I’ll show complete sets of real matches more often, also I’ll show the ttr ratings of all my partners and opponents. I think many areas of my game are already at 1550 or even higher, but other areas are still below which keeps my overall level down still. Also I am still not capable of playing consistently, sometimes I give 1800ttr players a hard time for a few points, sometimes I struggle against 1400. All I know that focusing on improvement is the right choice and time will always bring the results. The next 2 weeks will be very interesting as I play 2 tournaments and 3 sttc cup games which will be around 18-22 singles overall 💪🏼. A lot will depend on how I can apply my training level during these games. Let’s see 😊

      @@limittless. Any player who didn't learn TT "properly", with coaches, from a young age, and who tries to improve as a adult (like myself), can totally relate to this. I also have the forehand topspin of a 1600, the backhand of a 1300, the forehand flip of someone who has never touched a bat, etc. That all makes a global level, and depending on the strengths and weaknesses of your opponents, it makes you win some higher ranked players and loose lower ranked ones. I like it that, despite the title of this series, you focus on improving your game, and not necessarily to cash in as many points as quickly as possible.       maybe one in black ? But playing sets against his penholder style is pretty much useless since he his backhand is nonexistant, so u just play him there and win.. if he tries penholder he should at least try to play the correct RPB backhand like Dang Qiu / Felix Lebrun 😉

      @@Blackain66 yes, so many people change to weird setups during off season, when that’s the best time to really work on your game. This leads to confusion and at the end getting worse. Saw it with a few people now and always bad results. That being said, I totally understand if someone does that for fun if improvement is not the main focus.

      Doesn't matter which colour he wears, as long as he also wears a wristband on his left wrist that matches it. Now, what he REALLY needs to do is simply get a haircut. Table Tennis, and most sports in general, are no place for long hair. I mean, look at a lot of the female TT players. Even they get their hair cut short!

      Btw, against a TPB player like this: Long kick serves into his BH corner. Short underspin serves to his BH side. NEVER PUT THE BALL TO WHERE ITS PEAK BOUNCE IS IN THE MIDDLE OF THE TABLE LENGTH-WISE. Try to get long, spinny loops to his BH corner. Whenever you get him off the table, try to play the next shot to his BH side (doesn't necessarily have to be the BH corner, just to where he has to move to his left and play a BH). And whenever you play to his FH corner, expect to trade forehands back and forth with him. As weird as this may seem, try not to keep making the angle harsher and harsher wide, and try to play it slightly back towards the middle each time. But, still put the sidespin on it that makes it kick left (from your perspective), if you can.

I hate having long hair, but it has a purpose: it is easier to grip the long hair to do hair pulling massage / routine which prevents a man being bold prematurely. Such hair pulling massage supplies/drives extra blood to the hair roots. Research! 🙂
