I'm a stagehand and I'll tell you 100% of professional set-ups for a show like this would drape off the background and put the light on the drape, not only does that solve the ugly background problem but it solves the problem of it looking like daytime. But Scorch is so unprofessional, inept, and/or broke that he doesn't drape the background, but this is literally basic, standard stuff.

I remember doing drama class in the 7th and 9th grade and for some reason all the boys had to somehow incorporate fighting into their skits. It was so cringey!
