    hey! just got accepted and i’m strongly considering going to slo. but being asian, i’ve been a bit worried about “fitting in” knowing that it’s a predominantly white university. i am from the bay area and i go to a school that’s literally <5% white so cal poly would be an extreme culture shock for me since i’m used to only seeing bipoc. what was your experience like? do you feel that people were generally accepting and friendly? i just have heard stories of discrimination so i’m a bit scared, but i also understand that these may be isolated/uncommon incidents. thank you!

    • @tejasvichalamcherla149
      @tejasvichalamcherla149 Před 3 lety

      Hey! I understand where you are coming from. I came from a high school that had a large percentage of white students so cal poly was not as much of a culture shock for me compared to others. In my experience at cal poly, people were friendly and generally accepting. I did notice that sometimes in my computer science classes, that a large portion of the students were white males but I found a solid group of friends in computer science that made me feel more comfortable. In my experience, people were really nice and inviting. More often than not, I felt like I "fit in" and had people that made me feel at home there. In my time there, I noticed that Cal Poly's student body was becoming a bit more diverse each year. There are cultural organizations/clubs that you can join. I think that may help with the "culture shock" factor. You can see the list of current clubs here: clubs.calpoly.edu/clubs-directory. It was pretty easy to meet new people and make friends, especially freshman year because of the dorm environment and the fact that everyone is new helps build relationships. I will say that (unfortunately) people can potentially experience discrimination regardless of where they go to school and maybe the incidents you have heard of are isolated (it's hard for me to say). But I had lots of asian friends that found people they are comfortable with and built that sense of "community" with. Best of luck with your decision and congrats on getting accepted to poly!

      @tejasvichalamcherla149 Před 3 lety

      Hi Roshan, thank you! I just looked myself and you are right. The school does not seem to post average GPA or much other information. I did see this: "Admission to Cal Poly is highly selective and competitive in all majors. While GPA and test scores are important, it is impossible to predict a candidate’s chances by looking at these statistics alone. We encourage students to apply to the program they feel best fits their academic and professional goals." I would suggest that you email an advisor for more information. Find the graduate advisor for your program here: grad.calpoly.edu/about/coordinators.html. Here is more info about the grad program: www.calpoly.edu/admissions/graduate-student/selection-criteria I am not sure about the number of credits for the masters degree. I am sure the advisor will be able to answer that though. Best of luck! :)

      Hi! Sorry for getting back to you so late. I am not sure if doing CS at Cal Poly SLO hinders your chances of getting into a good graduate school compared to the UC's. I do have a few friends that applied to the CS graduate program at Cal Poly while in their final year of undergrad at Cal Poly. I think already being at the school for undergrad helps you funnel into the grad program a bit easier. Your best bet would be to email graduate advisors at UC schools and ask them what schools their grad students typically come from and other stats. Hope that helps. Good luck! :)

    What are your thoughts on software engineering major?

    • @tejasvichalamcherla149
      @tejasvichalamcherla149 Před 4 lety

      Hi Luis! I was actually planning on making a video about the difference between the 3 majors: computer science(CS), software engineering(SE) and computer engineering(CPE). The main thing about software engineering is that you take fundamental computer science courses as well as courses that are geared towards working in groups, individual software development and the overall process of software development more. Software engineering has less on theory and the in-depth courses such as compilers. I struggled with deciding between the two majors and personally am drawn towards more product management/managerial roles (in which software engineering would have been a little bit better) BUT computer science gave me a very in-depth knowledge of the fundamentals. Also (as of right now) the introduction classes are pretty much the same for computer science and software engineering so you could wait until your 2nd year at Cal Poly to decide to switch your major if you really wanted to. I hope that helps! :) Ah! And if you want, you can take a look at the flowchart for the software engineering courses and see their descriptions if you are still curious (this is the 2017-2019 catalog but there shouldn't be too many differences from the 2019-2021 catalog). flowcharts.calpoly.edu/downloads/mymap/17-19.52SEBSU.pdf

      Hmmm, I personally haven't heard of anyone that had a safe for their valuables but if it makes you feel safer then you should get one. All the housing around there is for freshmen(North mountain and the red bricks) so most of the people passing by your room will be students(in case that makes you feel better). A lot of people I knew freshmen year typically did not lock the door to their room. So I guess make what you want of that info and do whatever feels right for your situation and belongings. :) Best of luck!
