Painting Roberts Ranch in Livermore, Colorado ✿ Plein Air Vlog #60
In this week's vlog, me and several other artists were given a rare invitation to paint Robert's Ranch, a historic property in Livermore, Colorado that's normally not open to the public. After a confusing morning navigating to find the right road, I only had an hour left to paint! The wind was (predictably) howling across the treeless expanse and so the commentary I recorded was useless. That being said, it was a lovely session, with swallows winging over the water and a stately bluff in the distance.

Thank you so much for posting your Plein Air adventures! I don't know how many people understand the work that goes into you doing this and I only know just a smidge from trying it myself!! It is a lot of work! Thank you! Thank you!!!
Thanks for recognizing that! 😅Painting on location is a challenge, for sure (especially with the added filming/editing element) but it’s always super inspiring to be out in nature and I always learn so much, that it’s totally worth it.
That was a beautiful spot and I love your painting!! I hope you can go back someday. ❤ The “buffalo jump” made me sad but that was probably because I lost my dog yesterday. We shared the last 15 years but it’s never quite long enough.
So very sorry to hear about your pup. You're right, it's never enough time. (((hug)))
Oh Laura, Laura, Laura! I’m in a plein air group now! I had the most glorious time painting with my new found friends today. Can you tell I’m excited? 😆
Ohhh Moon I am so happy and excited for you!! Finding a tribe of like-minded artists who love painting outdoors is such a gift -- enjoy! :)
Wow, that's great!!
Thanks, dear Cat-Anne! :)
I apologize for the lack of umbrella to shade the painting as I worked - the wind was so strong an umbrella was impossible! However as you can see my hat did an adequate job. 🤠
We're in our most hot and humid period in Tennessee, but soon I'm going to take my setup out for some plein air attempts. You are always an inspiration. My only issue is that you (not on purpose, but through experience) make it look too easy, even when you make mistakes! Thanks, Laura. You are a bright spot out there.
Hooray for getting out to paint! Yesss! 🥰🎨 I'm a bit envious as more humidity = more working time for soft edges. There's a reason the masters of the medium hail from places like the Airondacks, Florida and the UK. Wishing you many pleasant sessions of cool and hydrated creativity, L
I loved looking at some very beautiful and interesting places in Ft. Collins and I even recognized some…we have visited many times but haven’t in the last several years. I have always loved visiting your great city. You have put together a very real and so enjoyable video (day in the life…). Thank you. 😊 PS-You parrot is adorable…and has such expressive eyes.
FC is always changing -- even from a year ago! We're hoping to do another sketch session in Old Town soon. Stay tuned... P.S. Skeeter says, "Hi" (it's one of his fave words).❤ 🦜
You’re a terrific vlogger. Love seeing where you are and what you’re up to.
Aw! Thanks for coming along, Kim This year has been fun to document....
Shoe rack! Genius!
My favorite color ever since going to Nassau in my 20’s.❤❤❤
This is so helpful. Thank you. Went on Amazon to order them used.
Awesome.
🥰!!
Wow! Turned out great! You were tough to last as long as you did on location. Always happy to “spend time” with you. 🙂
Thanks, Darci! Yeah, it was a bit of a hot, noisy slog towards the end, but well worth the effort. ☀️ 😅
Your finished painting is fantastic! I like how you take your time. not letting anything rush you. I really enjoy watching you and your painting process. Thank you for sharing.😊
Wow, thanks.🤠💕 I can be hard on myself for not always being as quick as I'd like, if anything because sometimes there are situations where there's a true and hard time limit (sunsets, closing times, plein air demos and contests, for example.) That being said, after doing this for a while I've learned that some scenes just tend to take me longer than others -- especially urban ones with lots of fun and interesting distractions.
Please do this again after the new sidewalks are in.
Haha I might just do that! 😄(Hopefully it won't take too long. Downtown needs as much foot traffic as it can get).
Brilliant simply brilliant. Great job Laura!
Aw, thanks so much, Moon! 🌜🥰
love watching real time. Gorgeous tree
Glad to hear! I was a little concerned that it was a little slow in places, especially the part with the tree. (But really, the tree WAS the main subject of the piece, so...)
This feels like a weird thing to say, but I have never noticed before how remarkable your lettering is! I've been trying to build my skills in acrylics, but you are inspiring me to get my watercolors (first love) out again. Way to hang tough in all of the distractions.
My origin story: In second grade, our teacher Mrs. Pearson held a penmanship contest that was to last all week. The winner would get a FULL-SIZED Three Musketeer candy bar that she'd placed before us, high atop the chalkboard so we'd have a constant reminder of what could be ours. Day after day I did my best, painstakingly executing each letter according to the strict Palmer Method that we'd been taught to mimic. Upstroke, downstroke, 52 degree slant. That Friday, she made the announcement. I'd won! I remember the fierce joy accepting the prize only to realize the wrapper felt floppy, like a warm water balloon. Inside was a gooey mess. (It was nearly June and our classroom didn't have air-conditioning). I ate it anyway.
What a ripper of an origin story Laura haha
Beautiful! The first thing I thought of when I saw the water is you’re gonna need some turquoise paint! 😂😂
I know, right?? It was so beautiful it was surreal.
In the last few years the wife and I discovered we are beach people, and this video spoke to both of us. While I like the first painting well enough, the bonus is exquisite. I feel the spontaneity of it transmitts your passion in the landscape as a whole, and really brings out the beauty of the place. Well done!
Thanks so much! 🥰I hope to visit and paint more beaches in the future; but it's a bit of a challenge as we live over 1,000 miles from the nearest ocean. 🌊🏖
Lovely peaceful, video: no annoying music, just birdsong and nice voice. I learned a lot about painting reflections from watching your video. Thank you!
The birds were singling so lovely at this location -- I'm glad I could share them with you! :)
So beautiful. Looks like you had a wonderful vacation. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks, Karen! It was hard to go back home, for sure. 🌺 🌅 🛥️ 🐠 🌴
I really like the way you put this video together,a work of digital art in itself. Enjoy the amazing sights and sounds with your family!
Thanks muchly, WW! Editing video can be a bit of work (as I’m sure you know), but it’s such a direct and amazing way to share with others.
Wow! so enjoyed the Bahamas. so nice of you to include us and show your painting. Lovely
Thanks for coming along! ((hug)) 😊🌴💕
Wow. That was relaxing.
It was! 🥰🌴
Laura, many thanks for taking us with you to such a beautiful place. It reminds me of snorkelling in the indian Ocean (Maldives, Mauritius) and the Caribbean (Bonaire, one of the ABC Islands of the Leeward Antilles). We did many other diving / snorkelling holidays but nothing matched the beauty, peace and friendliness of those islands, especially the dive and snorkel boat boys of Mauritius who were brillantly kind, helping this disabled lady to get a glimpse of a deep underwater world I could never have accessed without them. Snorkelling in shallow water is mesmerising, but two of them took me between them to swim in deep water... Their kindness, (and that of every local I met on the island, who went out of their way to give me experiences I could not have managed otherwise_) lives on in my heart! We were on Bonaire on September 11th 2001, at a dive complex of mostly Americans. I will never, ever, forget that shocked silence across the whole complex,,, and I have never been able to type that holiday book. But thanks again for taking time out to share part of your family holiday with us. That first painting, as you said, so different from Colorado, was simply beautiful! Did you swim and snorkel? I hope so - It would be so incrediby lovely! 😊
Bonaire is where my husband and I have done most of our scuba dives -- LOVE it there! The parrots and flamingos are so amazing there. And yes, we did manage to get underwater during this trip -- all of the footage was taken by yours truly while snorkeling (that's me at the 1:01 minute mark and again waving at 1:22). After hearing your praise for Mauritius, we'll have to look into it. Thanks for sharing! :)
(It’s Darci, not Rick.) I’ve commented before but wasn’t able to with my new phone. Anyway, that ocean is my happy color!! Can you have a happy color? Love your paintings! It looks like you paint oceans every day! Enjoy! If you can’t be in the mountains an island is a pretty good substitute. 😂🙂❤️
Hi Darci! (Sorry if I mistook you earlier, hehe). Yes, that blue is one of my happy colors, too. You know, I don't think I've painted an ocean from life more than a handful of times. I've been in and around mountains my entire life, but I think I could get used to island living as long as there's air conditioning -- it was so humid! Ooof. Thanks again for coming along on my adventures, L. 🎨🐠🌴
❤

Love your list......
Thanks! The year is nearly half over -- so far, so good. :) :)
Lovely day for it Laura. Beautiful spot, and the painting came out great. Always very relaxing to watch your process, and loved the little fishies at the end.
Thanks, WW. I'm having so much fun with my new waterproof camera! Even small ponds can reveal a whole other world...
@@LauraGYoung Definently. I will try to do some underwater footage this summer too hopefully. There is so much life in the pond this year,it will be really fun to explore the underwater world more 🙂👍
Love seeing the view through your eyes.
Carolyn!! 🥰So glad to have run into you again last week. ((hug))
wonderful work. thank you
@skyemathews8986 ❤️ 🥰 ❤️
could you show how you move all that staff to the site, looks like a bit of a logistic management there :)
I love your umbrella, what a great idea.
It’s organized chaos, really - lol! Here’s what goes in my bag: czcams.com/users/shortsfwOrzfnoG9k?si=udlCxb1iQV_bWey1 How I set everything up: czcams.com/video/BklaTLpMJAc/video.htmlsi=n72tXtVzxu5eQfC2 (the timelapse at the 5:50 minute mark.) And how it all goes back into the bag: (at the 24:01 minute mark) czcams.com/video/6OaPCmmxX6Y/video.htmlsi=4Q2ho-ZGbhCBfEys Admittedly I am a bit of a plein air maximalist, especially when painting locally, but when urban sketching or traveling I tend to carry less stuff. :)
EDIT: for whatever reason the minute marks are linking to the current video and not the ones I mentioned - eep! Please disregard those and just find the marks on the video links themselves. Ah, technology…
Nice! I was wondering how you found our video, and now I see you were at the same area. Great painting.
Clicking on the location button (in the case River’s Edge) takes me to places the YT algorithm might not. It’s a fun way to explore. 🚴 🚴
I love your watercolor paintings while out in nature. I believe you must be in River's Edge, Loveland. Are you a birder too? Thanks for subscribing to @DnAsbirdingadventures I just started with acrylic painting and want to try watercolors too. Thanks for sharing your process.
Yep, this was at River's Edge, and yep, I'm a confessed "bird nerd". :) Looking forward to more of your adventures!
Beautiful spot! Where did you get your easel set from? With the umbrella!!
The easel is the original watercolor setup from En Plein Air Pro that's seen regular use for over a decade. If they make it out of the same materials nowadays, I can vouch that it's lightweight and very resilient -- it's outlasted three tripods in ten years! I think the cost has gone up somewhat since I bought it, but that's been how it's been all over. * sigh * The umbrella was from a little company called Best Brella and is to my knowledge no longer made. I think Jerry's Artarama sells a white plein air umbrella, but it doesn't have as firm of a clamp and it's not vented like the one I have -- crucial if you live in a breezy location. Some artists I paint with use Guerilla Painter's Shade Buddy, but I don't think it comes in white. (my personal preference, as white = diffuse light) If I ever come across a comparable one to the Best Brella I'll for sure post something about it, as I get asked about this umbrella a LOT. Hope this helps, L.
Beautiful location and painting that you produced! So inspiring. Thanks for the video.
Thanks, Zoe! Interactions with artists such as yourself is super inspiring, too. I appreciate your time and kind words. 🥰 🎨
Just love watching your painting process…so real…so inspiring. You picked a very nice spot to paint. Of course, Colorado has many. Thank you for sharing.😊
Thanks, Nancy! 🥰 🎨Yeah, we're kinda spoiled for choice of landscape scenes here in CO. I can't wait until I get up into the mountains, though (it's still pretty windy/chilly at the moment). Bestest wishes, L.
I'm so glad you didn't cross over the pipe. Potential disaster averted! Looks like it was a lovely day, both because of and inspite of all the new friends you made on the path. Lovely painting, too.
Thanks so much, dear Terri. :) :) If I didn't have a lopsided backpack on my back I might've risked the crossing; but it just wasn't worth it with the camera gear. (the Insta360 is partially waterproof (as seen by the fish footage) but the charging case isn't and my phone certainly isn't! 📱💦
Just beautiful Laura! I love the glow you achieved in the water!
A "Happy Accident", as Bob Ross would say. :)

Really like the additions to your painting that you did when you returned to your studio. A really nice and finished painting. A little warmth and a little coffee always helps. Thank you for sharing your painting from Ft. Collins.😊

Heaps of thanks for watching, John! It turns out, she's a regular at the park. A true ray of sunshine. 🌞
I like the purple glaze. Thanks for taking us along.
Thanks so much for watching! 🥰Glazes are one of the reasons I love watercolor so much. It's so immediate. I mean, I can add a glaze with oils -- but that can take days or even weeks for the first layer to dry. 🌵🌵🌵
