I just recently picked up some high grade Tomahawks. Never realized until recently how many awesome Neal Adams and Joe Kubert covers there were in the the later years of this run.

For a young guy, your knowledge of comic book history is pretty impressive and your personal collection seems very diverse. Well done.

I remember the great DC implosion. In those days DC was throwing everything at the wall to see if it would stick. Many of those titles didn't matter. Anyone remember DC Superheroes vs Supergorillas? Didn't think so ..😏

The 100 pages spine was the.problem, First Edition were hard to keep cover fold overs. This period DC.cut back on print runs. Try finding Adventure 462 the end of Justice Society of America.

I came across this comic during the early 90s in a quarter bin, and I enjoyed it very much, mostly because I was already a fan of the Byrne/Claremont/Austin combo. It was the comic that introduced me to STAR-LORD, as I had never owned any of his b/w magazine appearances. I could be mistaken, but I think this story may have been reprinted in a Star-Lord trade that came out post 2000 that reprinted all of his b/w appearances plus the Marvel Spotlight issues that he appeared in. Wasn't that Star Lord edition printed on what was known as Baxter paper back then? Those PRESTIGE-Format comics were very cool, and offered such a wide variety of content. Just a couple that stood out for me from that 80s era, the Jim Starlin GILGAMESH series, the BLOOD vampire tale released by Marvel's EPIC imprint, and the PUNISHER: P.O.V mini by Jim Starlin and artist Berni Wrightson. Had no idea that the Charles Atlas character had been spoofed way before FLEX METALLO came out. I would love to get my hands on that! Now you have to do a video on the MARVEL (and maybe the DC) Hostess Treats Universe ads!! Those always held a weird fascination for me, especially the MARVEL ones. Thanks for the video!

You mentioned In The Days of the Mob. It was released as a single-issue magazine by Hampshire. It was later released as a hardcover by DC. A companion magazine was Spirit World, also with Kirby art. As you might have guessed - I had both but sold them off. There were also 3 issues of Elson's Presents with DC stuff.

Interesting video, most of the horror, love and comedy DC books in the 70's were very badly distributed in the UK, I saw at the time adverts for books that I could not find on the shelves. The only time I could fill gaps in my collections was to go to comic conventions which themselves were infrequent! Thankfully some American sellers came over with a lot of stuff rarely seen over here. I sold my whole collection back 1984. Left comics for a couple of years, then started again. I will never be able to replicate my entire collection, but I'm getting there with a few of the older collections. (Self plug, slowly showing them on my just begun channel, lol!) Subscribed and black belled!

I have a hardcover of action comics #1 famous first edition, unfortunately it doesn't have the dust jacket. I think there were different versions of the hardcovers as well. The Amazing World of DC is a great read for what was going on at the time.

I only have the Famous First Edition of WHIZ Comics with Captain Marvel. I wish these were reprinted.

Those 100 page romance comics have to be hard to find...I bought a lot of small collections and one comic shop stock of close to 40,000 comics in latter 1970s and early 1980s and didn't seem any non-superhero comic books. Of course I quickly sold 40% of that shop buy to a flea marketer at time and dumped all of the horror, "funny" books etc. Titles...but I don't recall seeing those romance books...probably because I was picking up primarily collectors books at time. Another very interesting video. I do not own ANY of those DC 100-page spectaculars, and I've only rarely seen them out in the wild. I see the DC Treasury editions all the time, but as you say, NOT in high grade. (Didn't even know they had hard cover editions of some!) That FIRST ISDSUE SPECIAL title was definitely a quirky book. I mostly liked it for the KIRBY issues (Atlas, Manhunter, Dingbats), Dr. Fate and WARLORD. But I do have that LADY COP issue. Definitely an oddball concept. I had a lot of those Whitman variants, and always hated that they didn't have the issue numbers on them. So funny how Marvel and DC both tried to bite off the ARCHIE-comic style with some titles. NEVER ever heard of a Laurel & Hardy comic! Unbelievable! Thank you for this cool post!

Great topic. I remember sitting at the local bookstore reading and re-reading Son of Origins and Bring on the Baddies way too many times when i was a kid. Thanks for the examples as I found a Western Team-Up #1 in really high grade (I believe). I have to do some thinking on if I grade it to preserve this one.

I have always been confused by the ending of Marvel Contest of Champions. The score ends at 2-2 but at the end Death says to the Grand-master "It would seem you have won Grand-master. Three of the four pawns bearing the globe-pieces are yours". The globes were returned by Daredevil, the Thing, the Arabian Knight and Shamrock. Daredevil and the Thing are on the Grand-master's team. The Arabian Knight and Shamrock belong to team Death. Did I miss something???? Can someone explain this to me? Thank you!

Hey Raph, have you heard of the 1978 April/May issues (not all) that had 4 page DC Questionaire inserts ? ie., Ghost #63 .BATMAN #298 . limited and hard to find in top grade?

I collected all the 1970s-1980s Treasury Editions. The hardest to find are the non hero ones. I had an extremely hard time finding DCs Welcome Back Kotter treasury.

Books from the 70’s are hard to find in a high grade because, back then, we actually read our comic books and didn’t stick just them in a bags & boards.

Great video. I've been collecting Marvel horror for 3 years now and trying to complete the Marvel horror genre. Completed Tomb of Darkness, Beware, Uncanny Tales from the Grave, Chamber of Chills, Fear, and Dead of Night, all high grade. For me, it's high grade or go home. Now gotta complete Monsters on the Prowl and Where Creatures Dwell. EC Horror is next on my list. Keep up the great videos. Love the content. Stay a kid at heart and never part with what you love.

There are no rare books from the bronze age, rare condition yes, but not books.

Excellent video. Despite lasting only a few issues, titles like The Cat, the original Shanna The She-Devil and everyone's favourite, Night Nurse, are very hard to find in high grade (Marvel reprinted all four issues of NN about 10 years ago which is how I finally managed to read them). It's taken me decades to get nearly all the b/w monster mags, only about a dozen left to find; unfortunately one of those is Savage Tales #1, which will cost me a lot when I finally get around to buying a copy. FOOM issues have become increasingly hard to find and increasingly popular, and as you point out, they were never printed in big numbers to begin with. Among the non-Marvel and DC titles of the Bronze Age, very hard to find (in any grade) are the small number of b/w magazines from the short-lived Atlas-Seabord in 1975-76, such as Devilina and Gothic Romances (which I have never seen a copy of anywhere).

I know what you mean by being picky about condition of books you look out for. I have holes just because of this…I guess I’m a bit of a snob.

This was a great video. I am 58 and have been collecting since I was 8, and I would agree with you that many of the titles you names can be found but not in high grades. I LOVE those horror reprint titles, especially MONSTERS ON THE PROWL because you almost always found some old Jack Kirby & Steve Ditko art in them. Same for the Marvel Western reprint titles. The stories were often fun, and I looked forward to coming across art by Kirby or Dick Ayers. Rawhide Kid seemed to last forever. Man, I completely forgot about those Hanna Barbera titles! I remember seeing them, but never bought any. NOW I wish I had! I NEVER had an issue of FOOM, nor have I ever seen any out in the wild. In terms of rare Bronze Age Marvel items you don't see often, I would also mention the MARVEL SUPER SPECIAL magazine. The first issue featured the rock group KISS in battle against Doctor Doom. Other issues featured comicbook versions of popular films like JAWS-II and CLOSE ENCOUNTERS. I believe one issue featured THE BEATLES with art by George Perez. Nice finds and a great video! Great Batman books. I completely agree about DC books. As mainly a DC collector, I'm okay with that. Makes it easier for me. 10:40 Slight point of clarification. Prior to 2020 there really was only one distributor, at least in the US, and that was Diamond Distribution. So not only was a having only one set of shipping costs we also got the best deal because all of our orders went to one distributor. Then DC left Diamond, and then Marvel, though you can still them them through Diamond. Diamond just has to get it through Penguin first. Image, and Dark Horse have also left. So not only are stores paying more for shipping, they are getting less of a discount across the board. Combine that with rent costs it's very hard to keep a store open. When I had my store almost 100% of the profit, at least the profit you can forecast, came from new product sales. The vast majority of that, like 70%, was preorder and pull lists.

Even though it's not Bronze Age...What do you think of Captain America The Great Gold Steal? It's a 1968 paperback book which also seems hard to find in decent condition. Here's what makes this book really interesting... All of those Bronze Age Horror reprints, I purchased several issues of those different titles back in the late 90's and they are all in high grade. I am 4 issues away from having complete runs of all of those titles. This was a great video!
