Assalamualaikum and thank you for posting. I agree with you that it is ironic that the West is complaining about anti-LGBT laws when historically they were the ones who imposed anti-sodomy laws in their colonies throughout the world. One of the main reasons for the Christians sending their fighters in the Crusades was the "lax morals" of Muslims in accepting people who are now defined as gays and lesbians. The Wests's previous obsession with and imposition of anti-LGBT stances in the past has since been sadly embraced by those they colonized. In these verses, Allah SWT reveals that the people of Lut were not homosexuals or what we in modern times would call the LGBT+ community, a people who have long been oppressed by ignorant people. The Prophet Lut says that the people were doing something that had never existed before in verse 80. We know that even some of the Egyptian pharaohs were homosexual, and that LGBTQ+ individuals have existed forever. They have existed long before Prophet Lut was born and to erase them is a form of oppression. So, we can exclude them. However, in verse 81 Allah SWT is even more explicit in illuminating that these people were not homosexuals. The Prophet Lut PBUH asks the question if they are homosexual - then answers this question with "NAY (BAL in Arabic), but you are a transgressing people." The people Prophet Lut PBUH was speaking to were very angry at him for demanding they stop their oppressive ways of publicly raping visitors to the city and immigrants. Allah SWT punished them by destroying them and their city. These verses are the most pro-LGBT+ verses in the Quran. For those reading this post and confused, please study these ayats as Allah SWT intended us to ponder the Quran and study the world to put things into further context. This means knowing our world history, Muslim history, as well as other sciences. What we see being brought up here is xenophobia, rape, and violent collective power being used publicly against visitors and immigrants. Allah SWT is very wise in bringing up this issue because we have seen World Wars and Civil Wars fought over this issue. In the USA, the anti-immigrant hysteria is growing with the Texas Governor putting metal spikes and razor wires hidden under the waters in the Rio Grande river with the intent to injure and kill people trying to cross the border. With climate change likely forcing humanity into mass-migration mode, the anti-immigrant and xenophobic hysteria is likely to grow worldwide as people move to try to survive famine and hardship. As Muslims we would be wise to learn from these ayats in the Quran and fight oppression in all forms. Going back to Qatar, it is sad the treatment of immigrants who built the stadium the World Cup was played at . Many died and were paid very little for risking to lives to build a stadium meant for entertainment. Workers of the world deserve better treatment and this verse should be seen as one that criticizes the Qatari government and other government not only for their anti-LGBT+ stances but even more so their ill treatment of migrant workers.
