    Really interesting analysis, thank you! I like how you point out that the backbone doesn't have to be too straight, just consistent, with the example of the clave. And also how you explain the different kinds of swing, especially in Latin music! I'd like to add some things that are important from my experience/in my opinion: 1. Breathing, i. e. the ratio of deep and bright beats. You'll have a hard time creating groove with only the kick drum or only snare and hi-hats. You need the right balance between those. 2. Space. Not playing otherwise expected beats can for example emphasize then next played beat, or give room for other instruments, and most of all create dynamics. All in all, there are similar things to consider as in harmony, and I also feel that this should be recognized and taught much more: In harmony, you have consonance and dissonance, fulfilling expectations or withholding them, creating tension and relief. The same is essential for a satisfying groove. And you can achieve this in many ways. In harmony, you can modulate to a different key, in rhythm, you can modulate to a different time signature, even have several at once. There is so much to discover, I love it!

    My jazz teacher once said, 'You never be more than two semitones away from the right note. However, you'll never play correctly without proper rhythm.'

  • @lilhdmi1276
    @lilhdmi1276 Před 8 dny

    the first one was less swingy but more energetic and electric. kind of like how in Art Blakey's style it seems like a snare hit could pop out anywhere. it makes me think, swing seems initially like its less consistent than a straight beat but its really more that its 'turning' slightly off kilter. on a nuanced scale the first one to me feels more electric like seemingly random hits are like bolts arcing with the music according to the drummer feeling tensions that might be more internally perceived on a moment to moment basis than as an easy to plot out and consistent rhythm. maybe what it is about the second one is that it has the same overall 'gravity' or pull back to one but its sort of an elliptical orbit or revolution where a straight beat would be circular it feels fun and 'swingy' because its literally like the fun part of swinging on a swing or racing right as you get to the straight away, as you loop through the long and short parts of the groove i hope that makes sense haha

    Good job of proving that you CAN'T teach jazz theory in 15 minutes. "...unless there's a flat sixth or flat thirteenth..." That's an assertion of fact, not an explanation. Theory is explanation.

    Great video overall. Very informative and well explained. I will say your that explanation of Jazz chords and harmony via scales is not the best way to go about it if the end goal is applying that knowledge in practice. The vast majority of tunes and standards in jazz are were not written with scales in mind. Same goes for when you improvise or comp. You don't think about scales, but rather you think about the changes (chords). The fact that each chord comes from a parent scale doesn't necessarily mean the scale will work in the same way. A chord can have a certain quality to it that gets lost when you introduce other notes from the parent scale. That doesn't mean there are no scales in Jazz, of course there are. Minor, major, Alt. dominant, and diminished.. But scales are not the tools with which to understand jazz, and definitely not modes. Soloing on a jazz tune with the scale of each chord in mind just doesn't sound right most of the time, that's not how it's usually done.

    • @EricBowman
      @EricBowman Před 11 dny

      If you see an a-13 chord on a tune in C major, the parent scale is what tells you that the 13 is an f#, not an f, for example. It’s just guide to tell what notes to use if there are extensions in the chord. When improvising you can play the parent scale or whatever scale you want.

    Someone should make a plugin that automatically applies the best syncopation formulas the studies found with a scale that goes from 0-100% where 100% is the highest point where diminishing returns started. Just apply it on your MIDI track, press Syncopate, and bam now your boring ass melody or drums is some groove sauce.

    • @EricBowman
      @EricBowman Před 13 dny

      That’s how the Ableton grooves (I demo at the end) work. I agree it would be nice as a 3rd party plugin though.

  • @andycordy5190
    @andycordy5190 Před 13 dny

    Colossal! I almost didn't watch this video because my feelings about groove are somewhat mystical and I thought it would be like explaining why a joke is funny. Far from it. I learned so much particularly in the section about the Purdy shuffle. The beauty of that man playing a constantly varying groove and scatting along further improvisations made me cry. I am untrained as a musician and have done whatever I have done through feel, that is, by instinct. Where that breaks down for me is in sequencing, though, as you point out, there is no longer an excuse for this in Ableton, my experience goes back to the roots of electronica (Pro24, the predecessor of Cubase) and in Ableton I am by no means a master, though my experience of the application of so called 'swing' by computer instruments leaves me cold. Primarily a song writer and lyricist, my admiration for those musicians who can set or reset words in a melody or write/re-write a melody or rythmn around the complex structures.of speech, mean everything to me ( Sondheim, Joni, Ellla.....). As an old guy, loving the masters of hip hop is all about how they groove not about what is being spat and I will admit that sometimes I hear a beat, at odd(in my ear) with the MC seems to carry the structure and the placement of samples appearing to break down the groove and I guess it's because I'm not hearing it the way they are.
