Shut your Mouth! Or your health will be seriously damaged (kids and adults) [George Catlin 1862]
The dangers of mouth breathing (as opposed to nose / nasal breathing) were deduced in the 19th Century by George Catlin, who visited indigenous American tribes and noted their good facial structures, good teeth and dental health, and lack of chronic disease. He documented these findings in his book Shut Your Mouth and Save Your Life (1862). The consequences of mouth breathing include, high blood pressure, increased risk of heart disease, poor dental health, worsening of the oral microbiome, increased risk of osteoporosis and dementia, and facial deformities in children including small jaws leading to overcrowded crooked teeth, visual problems including short sightedness, and various other features described by the terms "adenoid face" or "long face syndrome". Make sure you shut your mouth and breath through your nose.

    My GP txt me to say I should start Statins after my recent blood test. I ignore the txt. I then had a follow up call from the surgery that I was at risk of a cardiovascular event and that I should consider taking Statins to lower this risk. I wasn’t offered any discussion on the benefits of statins or implications of taking them, simply told I was at risk if I didn’t take them. I then informed the GP that I’m currently undergoing life style changes that through my own research, I believe will have a much better chance of improving my overall health in a more profound way than taking a statin which will only affect statistics on medical records in improving my cholesterol levels. Further to this I truly think that it is imperative that everyone should take charge of their own health and not rely on the advice given by pharmaceutical market leads pushing GP practitioners into a corner to prescribe drugs.

    I recently was hospitalized for a "complete heart block". Nothing to do with "heart blockage", having to do with cholesterol or anything. They put me on Atorvastatin to help insure that there wouldn't be any problems relating to clotting or anything like that. After a few weeks now, should I even continue to take it. I have always refused to take statins and decided to do things more naturally. They occasionally say that my cholesterol level is elevated, but not necessarily any bad cholesterol. I usually use fish oil. Currently, I feel more tired, lethargic, and even having some dizzy spells tha I wouldn't normally since taking atorvastatin. I don't really see any reason to keep taking this. Any advice on the subject?

However within a couple of weeks I could barely walk down the stairs. I explained this to my GP and she agreed that it could be a good idea to stop taking them. I was back to normal within a week! Lifestyle changes seem a bit more difficult, as some gentle changes have not had the desired effect yet.

    I like the objectivity of your video, thank you. I am a medicinal chemists with decades of research experience, yet I am confused about statins. I am higher risk, even though never had stroke or heart attack. My calcification score is 230 and I am 66 years old. MY LDL was high (about 154 mg ml) but so was my HDL, I exercise well, not diabetic, and am not overweight. I have had radiotherapy to the neck twice (once each side) . Heart CT shows plaque build up in one main area in the heart, but not enough to require treatment. My cardiologist put me on atorvastatin because of this, and that was lucky because later I found I had a high level of blockage (>70%) in one carotid artery (sonogram) and was fitted with a stent 6 months ago. I checked clinical studies and found statins were shown to be highly beneficial for patients taking them before stent operations, so glad I happened to be on them for 6 months before the op. (LDL then down to about 60). However, I have not found clinical trials probing effects of statins for patients after (eg 6 months and longer) a stent. I hate taking them because I think they make me weaker, and promoted muscle pain, and this did make it harder to exercise. Consquently, about 2 months ago I reduced my atorvastatin dose (against advice) to 5 mg three times a week. My conclusion: nobody knows how much statins help someone like me because there have not been enough trials of similar individuals: we are all just guessing, Do you agree, or are there studies I did not find? Further, I have hunch, tentatively supported by PET scans over 5 years, that radiotherapy probably caused plaque in the carotid, and might even have caused it in the heart (even though that was not in the beam). Understandably, you will not give specific medical advice, but are my conclusions about trials in this area valid for patients like me?

I'm pretty fit as exercise 4-5 time week, and total cholesterol is 5.5mmol/L. Cardio consultant said my arterial plaquing is 30 percentile for my age of 60, but didn't explain if thats good/bad, but think its OK. He said I'm goign to prescribe you statins. I said no. He tried 2 more times to prescribe them in a 15 minute consultation! Tried to reduce cholesterol level through diet and use of plant sterols, but over 6 months made negligible difference, which is what the cardio consultant would be the case (he said diet wouldn't likely make anymore than 5-8% difference).

Earlier on, i watched so many doctors say statin increases risk of dementia. It is tiring and confusing, not to mention scary because I just convinced my husband to get off statin for his high LDL. I wished every doctor here would say the same thing but for every person who says it's bad, there's another person who says it's good. I am so tired, who to believe. I am now taking a statin and baby aspirin until I can get a stent. It's irresponsible to suggest people shouldn't take a statin. You need to get a CIMT or a Coronary Arteries CT angiogram to see if plaque is building up and what type of plaque.

    This is great info, not too complex or anything and is a really useful baseline diet to go off of. The only thing i would change is moving the wholegrains to treat simply because they are relatively low in nutrients and high in phytic acid. Plus if ur eating nuts too u dont want too many sources of phytic acid to compound and possibly cause a mineral deficiency. If ur concerned about pesticides on fruits and veg u can soak them for 10 minutes in a bowl of water with a tablespoon of baking soda to drastically reduce the amount of surface glyphosates and other endocrine disrupting herbicides and pesticides👍

    Sorry this is nonsense! Do you not study history? Have you not heard of Gin Lane? Alcoholism was common, everybody, almost, drank alcohol rather than water which wasn't clean , until much later. Victorians loved there pies and cooking in animal fats. Addiction to opium was also common. If you lived to be 50, you were very old, whereas 50 today is seen as much younger, because a 50 year old today is in better shape usually. Even the generations that were adults in the 40s 50s and even 60s if you were 30 then you were more like an older person, more middle aged, today 30 is considered still very young. The point is people in the past aged more and got older quicker due to hard work, and poorer lifestyles and pooer food, sometimes, especially if you were working class, by the time you were 50 you were worn out. Even up to the 1950s in the uk, some aspects of life were still similar to the Victorian age. You retired at 65 and were usually dead before 70 of heart disease.

    What a load of rubbish. Most of us breathe naturally in the way that is most natural to do for us as oxygen is the 1st fundamental main source of life & without it we will soon die in minutes. My looks haven't changed, not ugly at all. I look 20 years younger & people can't believe my age. I am of an old age & nothing wrong with my teeth like you say but straight & normal. If I didn't breathe through my mouth right now I might be dead as I would be struggling to breathe as I suffer with Chronic Sinusitis & my nasal tubes get blocked. I don't snore either.

    • @drphilipbosanquet
      @drphilipbosanquet Před 3 dny

      In my opinion, a vast amount of people breathe with an unnatural pattern, including in other ways such as with more chest wall movement than diaphragm, and at an excessively fast rate. Lots in the modern world can corrupt what would otherwise be done correctly. Stress, for example, being a big one for breathing, and as you mention, chronic sinusitis (which for many people is caused by modern environmental or lifestyle factors). Eating patterns are also the most natural thing in the world but most people in the modern world don’t get that right. Obviously the points in the video are generalisations, not specific to you as an individual, though just because you do not think your health has been impacted negatively, doesn’t make them a load of rubbish.
