Concrete floor: Installing Pex tubing/ radiant in-floor heat
zhlédnutí 7KPřed 2 lety
This is the process of installing pex tubing for radiant in-floor heat. This was done by myself stapling by hand. If you’re attaching this to rebar or concrete wire, the process is the same except you'll probably will be able to use the rebar or wire mesh as spacing markings. The materials I used were sourced from Supplyhouse.com.

Insulating concrete floor. How to prepare to lay down foam board

In this video I describe how to prep your surface for foam board. Please note, I am NOT a professional concrete or insulation person, I am just showing how I am going about it in hopes to give tips to anyone looking to do this on a DIY level. Enjoy! EDIT: I ended up "modding" my homemade dirt screed. I cut the edge at a 45 degree angle to make a cutting edge. This ended up making the screed muc...

JD 2025R backfilling dirt

Sorry about the tree in the way! I forgot my tripod and had to wedge my camera in a tree branch. Anyway, just took a short video of backfilling a triaxle load of sand (18yrds) for my garage project. It took 20 loads to fill in the area. Enjoy!
County Line post hole digger operation/review

Here is my overview. I did not get a chance to dismount the digger yet. Perhaps I will post another video... enjoy!
Should the main hydraulic hoses be disconnect from the tractor or not ? prior to do the repair. I got to do my, which is leaking, just little.
No, no need to disconnect the power beyond lines. The backhoe SCV valve will prevent any flow issues, just don't touch the outrigger lever and you'll be fine. Get a good pair of snap ring pliers also, my Vice Grip brand pliers were too small. Good luck and take you're time, you'll get it!
@@barelystablefarm7151I called my local JD and got the price for the seal kit. $175.00
Hi. Good video. I had the experience here in Kentucky. $10000 to install pex and foam in my garage floor. Doing my own. Your video is very helpful. Please keep them coming!
4inches of cement weights 4,000 lbs over a 4x8foam board. Any air gaps you start with, won’t exist after 4,000 lbs of cement is poured over it.
Maybe so, but I'm not willing to take any chances with any air gaps (I drive heavy machinery on this) and really is the way it -should- be done. It isn't that hard to level the surface at a consistent grade. The purpose of this video was to show a simple tool that any shmuck like myself can fabricate to make it super easy. Thank you for the comment!
Use 2 layers of 1" overlapping the seams to cover the cracks to prevent thermal bridging , if you're not going to use tongue and groove Cost the same $$ 00:56 vapour barrier goes down on top of the styrofoam and must be sealed water tight to prevent iceberging, meaning the water from the concrete will lift the styrofoam when you pour the concrete
I directly stapled the pex to the foam. As directed by my floor guy, he said to install the barrier underneath otherwise it would be peppered with holes from the staples and essentially useless.
Thanks for the video. I bought an old somewhat abused JD 1025R with the older style backhoe that had been left outside for years. I could see how badly it was rusted around the support arm snap rings and one was leaking so I bought seal kits and set to work. It took days to clear away the rust, free up and remove the old snap rings yesterday. I bet the top piece is well rusted in place but I will get it out somehow. It was good to see a video of the seal replacement.
Thanks for the comment and hope the video helped! Just FYI, if you find the top collar is really rusted/pitted or any other parts needs to be replaced go to JD parts online and you’ll be able to order cylinder parts. Order from Green Parts Store and use TTWT code at checkout for free shipping.
Thanks for the tip about free shipping - I would go for it if I was in the US. International shipping is probably too much. Crazy prices for JD parts in New Zealand. The seal kits were about $600. The top collar is badly pitted on the exposed surface. I asked for a price for the top collar at the local JD dealership. It was about $400 NZ, so hopefully they will be re-usable.
@@pogs9833 gotcha, and wow that is expensive! I guess I’d try to wire bush and clean parts the best I could for that money. If you need any help along the way reach out and I’ll do the best I can to help out! Good luck!
I understand vapor barriers in concrete floors...i understand insulating under a radiant floor heating system. Why insulate a concrete floor if it is not heated??
It is still important to do because the cold ground acts as a heat sink. No matter how you heat the building it will be more efficient by creating a thermal break between the concrete and the ground. In some locations this (insulating the concrete) is also required by code.
@@barelystablefarm7151 I've never witnessed it being done, just curious. Thanks for the reply.
Well done video. Good Explanation. The only thing I would do differently (after watching the video and getting hindsight) is wait until you get the internals out and slide the old snap ring off then put the new one on the shaft before reassembly.
Thanks! Yes, I agree about the snap ring! Thought of that after the fact LOL!
@@barelystablefarm7151 I just did a video adding grip tape to my backhoe platform and worked around the bolts. When I was editing it I realized it would have been easier and work better to remove the bolts. 🤪
professionals are not going to do it better
Excellent primer on getting the sand level. I'll bet you got better workmanship than you would have gotten after paying thousands to a contractor. I think the plastic vapor barrier is redundant. The foam is a pretty good vapor barrier, but I live in a dry area. Maybe put all but a couple of inches of sand down, lay the plastic with edges folded and taped up the walls, then screed out the last 2 inches of sand, and finish the rest just like you did in the video.
My wife and I live the same way. When you go to buy anything, you need to look at how much gross income you need to make to have the net amount of money to buy it. This is the true cost to buy anything.. Please remove the sunglasses when you make videos. You will look more credible.
Vapor barrier should go on top of the foam board not underneath. That way it prevents any cement getting underneath the foam board.
Great video! Planning to do the same with my garage build. Any videos of your garage as it stands today?
You said 10K. Do you mean 10k just for the pex, manifold and foam boards??
Oh, I think you mean if you paid someone. $4500 max for the materials I guess.
@@stevenpringle7813 it was 10k hired out, roughed in just like I did here. 4500 was my materials cost. Of course, that was few years ago and the foam board is now double the cost at 60+ dollars a sheet, at least in my area.
@@barelystablefarm7151 Hopefully the price of the foam comes down like they are predicting everything to do in the coming years. Why didn't you use wire mesh?
@@stevenpringle7813 yes hopefully prices come down, that’s a crazy amount for 1 4x8 sheet of foam. I did use wire mesh, it was placed in right before the pour.
@@barelystablefarm7151 I have seen some claims that having the PEX at the bottom of the slab is not as efficient as having it in the middle. Some people use 1/2 rebar held up on bricks and then put the PEX on top of that. I would think that having it setup like that would be very difficult to pour the concrete as you would be tripping over the rebar and be unable to tell where to step. The PEX could also get damaged by stepping it down between the rebar squares. How does it work being at the bottom of the slab?
What is the strength of that insulation? I am about to do the same but no concrete over .Just 2 3/4 osb boards floating over the insulation
The rigid foam I used is 25 psf strength (XPS), plenty for under concrete applications. For your application under OSB I'd use 40 or even 60 psf insulation. Owens Corning is a popular brand. Hope this helps!
Smart!!
Great video!
Thank you and thanks for watching!
Good tips. That stuff isn't cheap. The R10 is close to $62 a sheet.
Wow you're right! I just checked and it's 60.48/sheet in my area. I think I paid 35/sheet when I did the floor and I thought that was expensive because it had gone up then too. Unbelievable! Thanks for watching!
Great video... Thank you for sharing... 😎
I might have missed it, what size is the building

Where's your vapor barrier bra?
The vapor barrier is underneath the foam. Thanks for watching
Thanks for Vid.. Gonna pick one up tomorrow.
Thanks for watching! Glad you picked one up.. I've used mine for countless holes and still works great, as long as you have the right soil conditions. Happy 4th!
Good tips. Can i install laminate after foam isolation? Will it be right?
I have heard some installing plywood over the foam and then laminate on top so it has a good base. Some say to contact the manufacture and ask. Thanks for watching!
Good tip! Thanks. One thing, poly should go on top of the insulation instead of the bottom, to prevent the insulation sheets from floating up into the concrete since concrete can get in-between the foamboard and the poly. The poly is actually a moisture barrier in a slab application, not a vapor barrier.
Thanks! I stapled the PEX directly to the foam board, so without peppering it with holes I installed the barrier underneath. I was told for it to be done this way by my concrete contractor. Thanks for your comment & happy Easter!
@@barelystablefarm7151 I might not have watched the whole video. I was not aware you're doing PEX. My bad. Cheers from Canada.

Good tips. How do you insulate the garage door opening between the slab and the approach?
I insulated the outside of the foundation wall from the footing to just slightly below grade at the door approach. I did this across the entire gable end at the doors, but not the rest of the building since it's already insulated on the inside walls. Hope this helps.
@@barelystablefarm7151 Thank you for the reply. Is there any way of creating a thermal break between the concrete approach and the garage slab that you might know of? My garage will be attached so it has a frost footing but the cold approach will be against the warm slab.
