2022 Volkswagen Golf R review: should you buy one over a GTI?
It may be £4,000 more expensive than a GTI, but the new VW Golf R gives you Audi S3-beating performance for a little over £40,000.
The Golf R is powered by the familiar 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine you'll find in the S3, as well as the VW Tiguan R, Arteon R and various Cupra models. However, you get 316bhp (320PS) in the Golf R, which is a little more than what's available on all other models using the same engine. Plus, the Golf R is all-wheel drive and is fitted with a seven-speed DSG, so you'll be able to go from 0-62mph in just 4.7 seconds - 0.1 seconds faster than an S3. Drift mode is optional, as is an Akrapovic exhaust system - an they're expensive too. But is the Golf R all the hot hatch you need? And does it now render the GTI a little useless?

What is CarScore?
It's quite literally the new home of car reviews. We scour the web for the latest test drives from top car reviewers and websites, before allocating each review with a score out of 100. We then calculate a final number based on the average across all reviews, which will be the definitive car score. But that's not all: we'll provide our own independent review right here on CZcams and soon our very own website to give a little context to each score.

2022 Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo review: the perfect electric car?
zhlédnutí 23KPřed 2 lety
All the coolness of the Taycan coupe with all the practicality of an estate and genuine go-anywhere ability of an SUV. Is the Cross Turismo all the car you need? It's certainly delivers in the numbers department. While it can't match the Tesla Model S on range, it does offer up to 265 miles on a single charge courtesy of a 93.4kWh (83.7kWh usable) battery pack. And like the standard Taycan it's...
2022 BMW 128ti UK review: should you buy one over the VW Golf GTI?
zhlédnutí 66KPřed 2 lety
A front-wheel drive BMW hot hatch? You bet. And with the new Mk8 Golf GTI being a bit of a letdown, the new 128ti might just be the best German hot hatch on sale. So here are the numbers: the 128ti packs a turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol engine producing 265hp and 400Nm of torque, making it a fair bit more powerful than the Golf GTI. Power is sent to the front wheels through an eight-speed automa...
2022 Audi RS e-tron GT review: why buy this over a Porsche Taycan?
zhlédnutí 1,4KPřed 2 lety
Both use the same electric architecture and performance isn't that different either, so why should you buy an RS e-tron GT instead of a Taycan Turbo? They're silhouettes may be similar but the RS e-tron GT has some clear design differences to the Porsche. The nose sits higher and there's a distinct 'grille', in direct contrast to the Taycan's sleeker looks. And while they use the same 85kWh bat...
2022 BMW M5 Competition (F90) UK review: why buy one over the M550i?
zhlédnutí 5KPřed 2 lety
What used to be an understated super saloon is now a track focused weapon, but is the new M5 really that much better than the V8-powered M550i? There's no denying the M5 Competition is the more hardcore of he two. Its 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 produces 626hp and 750Nm of torque, which is sent to all-four wheels through an eight-speed automatic gearbox. 0-62mph only takes 3.3 seconds, which is imm...
NEW Mercedes-Benz E-Class hybrid UK review: UBER luxury
zhlédnutí 4,3KPřed 2 lety
The BMW 5 Series may drive better and the Audi A6 is slightly better built, but the new E-Class is easily the most luxurious of all its rivals. But is it the class leader? It's certainly the 'freshest' of the lot. The 2022 model comes with a new grille, bumpers, head and tail lights. There's also a neat interior tech upgrade that brings with it some seriously high-quality displays that'll put m...
Aston Martin DBX 2022 UK review: buy now or wait for a facelift?
zhlédnutí 677Před 2 lety
The DBX SUV has arrived to solve Aston Martin's money problems, but it still has some way to go before fighting with the Lamborghini Urus and Bentley Bentayga. On the plus side, the DBX is a surprisingly good car in the corners. There's nothing inherently sporty about a Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV), but Aston has managed to make the DBX feel as light and nimble as possible. It even has some nif...
NEW Mazda MX-30 2022 UK review: should you pay £28,000 for a weird EV?
zhlédnutí 1,2KPřed 2 lety
The MX-30 may look like a regular electric crossover on the surface, but it's full of clever quirks that'll make you overlook the VW ID.3 and Kia E-Niro. But you shouldn't overlook the competition because the MX-30 is far from perfect. For ever cool design feature is another frustration, such as the tiny amount of space in the rear and disappointingly short range of 124 miles. For the latter po...
NEW Volkswagen Polo 2022 UK review: is it better than a Fiesta?
zhlédnutí 39KPřed 2 lety
The Polo is bigger and more advanced than ever before, which not only puts it up against the Ford Fiesta but also its bigger sibling - the VW Golf. So what's new on the 2022 Polo? For starters, there are a few small changes to the design including reworked head and tail lights. You also get revised VW badges, new wheel options (15s, 16s, 17s (and 18s on the GTI)) plus the Polo name in the centr...
NEW Lotus Eletre 2023 FIRST LOOK: can you add lightness to an electric SUV?
zhlédnutí 6KPřed 2 lety
The idea of a Lotus SUV with a big heavy battery below it sounds strange, but the BMW iX rival has added lightness wherever possible to stay true to the company formula. Let's face it, SUVs are critical to commercial success and Lotus wants a slice of the pie with its new Eletre. It'll be powered exclusively by electricity, with outputs starting from 600hp, and will offer a 0-62mph time of unde...
NEW Honda Civic 2022 hatchback static review: the most desirable Civic yet?
zhlédnutí 21KPřed 2 lety
Honda's new hatchback is not only one of the big reveals of the decade so far, but it could dethrone premium giants such as the VW Golf... Why's that? Well, Honda has focused its efforts on toning down the hatchback's controversial styling while ramping up the level of tech available. There's a new infotainment system on the inside which is vastly improved over the old Civic, plus you now get e...

I'm the owner of a 2023 Mazda MX-30 GS as my first EV because I like the look & finish and the way it handles. Price wise, it's pretty good as Mazda offers a 4000$ rebate and another 12000$ in rebates from the federal & provincial governments (Quebec, Canada). I have to say I use it as a second vehicle to do all my shopping/groceries/meetings etc... all within 40 km from my house and I won't use it during winter time (October 31 to may 01). I understand the range is said to be 160 km but I've done more than 180 km on rural roads & city roads and it was showing15% left! But if you're looking for a primary vehicle for all year around and long trips, you should consider an EV with a 360 km minimum range knowing that in winter time when it's really cold (-20c +), you'll be using "heating/heated seats/heated streering etc..." which will have a negative impact on the range (minus 40% +) and it will take longer to charge. 😊 Average of 16 kwh/100 km

Thanks for your review. You tested the amount of space in the back seats - it was extremely tight for you based on how you’d set the front seat to accommodate your comfort. However, you have omitted to disclose how tall you are - please let us know as your review seems overtly critical of the rear space (which will accommodate 3 adults abreast - depending on how tall and large they are I suppose). And yes, you CAN get out of the back - as long as you pull the front seat release, push it forward, fold down the seat back, lean forward and open the front door - followed by the rear door - ergo, you’re not really trapped. I had owned a Mazda MX-3 for 8.5 years and THAT was truly tight in the back - it was possible to get out of the back in exactly the same way I described - except that only had two large doors. Otherwise, thank you for your review 😊

Looked so bumpy down those back roads where the tarmac road surface was naf, think it would be un-comfortable as a daily due to the suspension being too hard and no option for adaptive dampers that you can have on the golf, yes if does cost extra on the golf.

With the current model you can get a 110 engine with a 6 speed manual, plus there's proper climate controls rather than silly touch controls buried low down on the centre console. A backwards step.
