I always have just skipped this arc bc I thought it was just useless filler but this video has peaked my interest and I might actually give s4 a chance next time I rewatch it

Joey winning battle city may have made sense thematically but wouldn't have at all for the plot. Battle City rules state that the winner gets the opponent's rarest card. This means that Joey winning battle city would get him Ra and either Slifer or Obelisk, and Yugi would still keep his Red Eyes because it's not rarer than the gods, meaning it can't be used as ante for a tournament duel. Joey would have to duel Yami again post tournament with the Red Eyes at stake and win again to get it back. This sounds extremely clunky narrative wise. And then Yami would have to duel and beat him two more times for the god cards so he can fulfill the prophecy and start millennium world. In my opinion, the way it happened in the manga, with Joey collapsing just before defeating Marik and then beating Yugi for the Red Eyes after the tournament, was a much smoother way to solve all those issues. I'd also like to add that Yugi only "coached" Joey in two of the duelist kingdom duels, those being the one against Mai and the tag duel against the Paradox Brothers, that is if you even count it. The whole stipulation of the Rex Raptor duel was that Yugi wasn't allowed to coach Joey. Yugi also didn't coach Joey during the duel against Bones due to not being there to watch. Yugi also didn't coach him against Bandit Keith, a former American champion, who cheated in the duel multiple times and still lost. I personally don't agree with the notion that Joey was just some novice at the start of battle city. I see the purpose of the loss against the rare hunter being more of a way to knock Joey down a peg so he didn't get cocky after being the DK runner up. And also to prove that he didn't need to always rely on the Red Eyes to be a great duelist.

Season 0 was far more tame when compred to the manga's events which are considered the more canonical stylization. Yami didn't just cause hallucinations, he outright killed people.

Zexal Kaito was the best rival charater in thenwhoel YuGiOh being the only one to not lose. only lost once to Tron cause Tron threatened to kill Kaito's brother and that's how he lose. And how do you stop the most OP Rival to not win against the Final Villain of Zexal, killed him cause his duel on the moon his spacesuit and life support system was damage unlike Joey from OG where he pass out before his win against Marik, Kaito won the duel and his suit break and kill him in the process

Cards games on motorcycles is actually pretty good. Like many I was skeptical on watching it, but it is pretty good!

I agree that vrains is the best yugioh anime, but I can say that you'll be surprised when know that Go Rush is near good as vrains, it definetely A tier if it's not S. Just give it a chance and keep watching it till the end. It's way way better than sevens (which is so trash for me personally)

6:52 Since when was that a thing with The Egyptian God Cards!? The only reason that happened to Odion was because the tried to use a fake Winged Dragon of Ra. Strings was able to summon Slifer The Sky Dragon with no issues and he didn’t have a Millennium Item, but was just controlled by one. And Kaiba DEFINITELY didn’t have a Millennium Item and had no problems with Obelisk The Tormantor. So what gives?

For decades I thought this was the final arc and the actual final arc was filler. I only ever had sporadic chances to watch so I saw this show very out of order but this arc had much more of a final arc feel to me. And I remember it being by far my favorite arc. Unbelievable that it's actually filler. Maybe the greatest filler arc I've ever seen.

You should do a video on the slow burn of Bakura. I was floored how they introduce him at first, he stores his soul in the Puzzle, is important at the end of Duelist Kingdom and even Battle City even more, then is absent, but then comes back with a bang for the final arc. Especially his backstory of being the Thief King whose city was sacrificed so he was taking revenge. People knock that last arc I’ve heard but I love it. The intro of the arc with Yami-Bakura haunting Bakura as he runs through town is chilling and amazing, in Japanese and in English. I’d love if you talked about Bakura, pros and cons of his arc and all! 😊 Great videos all around!

I think this fits well as an arc since it REALLY plays with those fantasy/season 0 roots of the show. The way the card is obtained when it’s first blank, then you have to take a crystal that feeds upon your darkness which then makes the card active. Such fantasy artifact vibes, and then the tension and story beats and the implications with the Pharaoh’s even and everyone’s arc including Dartz gang and Mai later on also… The arc was insane to learn its filler absolutely!

This filler arc make it to German national news. I remember when they reported it back in the days.

I thought GX was the best one, to me it stuck closest to the ideals of the actual game, had duels every episode and the cast wasn't bad. It wasn't perfect but it was better than the others. As far as 5Ds goes .. honestly, dueling on motor-cycles seems like it'd be pretty cool to do even if at the same time, it's an absurd idea.

Kaiba manipulating a Billionaire arms dealer to adopt him and his brother. Then manipulated his way to be sole of owner of the company and changing the company to a card game company from a Military arms dealers always made him my favorite character.

Duelist Kingdom honestly gets more shit for breaking the rules of the card game than for anything else, but if you can accept that those rules weren't yet established, and roll with the show on its own terms, it actually wasn't a bad arc. Had some good character writing and exciting moments.

Monster World was so cool. The Duel Monsters adaptation really lost some awesome moments when it chose to jump ahead instead of re-adapting Season Zero. (Speaking of, I'm doing a rewatch in Japanese this time, and I'm pretty sure they haven't mentioned that they know Ryo Bakura from school yet. That's weird, right? They mentioned him twice already, but not their connection to him. Oh well, l'm sure it'll be brought up once Yami Bakura makes his appearance in a few episodes.

I posted this in another comments reply but I want to share this idea here too. I find Joey's relationship with luck in the card game interesting. During Duelist Kingdom he went from pure mindless brawl to honing his skills, learning to combo Spells and Traps into his style. Nothing luck-based of his own volition, and Yugi's Time Wizard being a last minute gift he put in because of his trust in Yugi. Time Wizard ends up pulling Joey though during his first duel in DK. It didn't always pull through but it turned the tables on scenarios where he probably had no other way to do so. I recall Joey dueling mostly this way until his duel against the rare hunter that took his Red-Eyes. His skills had grown but the world is big and you are bound to bump into people with better technical skills, or people that might even play dirty, so keeping the door open for a "leap of faith" of sorts was probably the way he decided to evolve from that point on. After all some say "luck is part of one's skill". Though Joey is still growing at the stage in his life we see him at. His father has issues with drinking and gambling, and Joey has used luck in unwise ways as well.... Before Duelist Kingdom, Joey's shoes are the product of him gambling with a store-owner that told him to get one feet in. Either he'd be fine and the expensive shoes would be his, or he'd find the scorpion and possibly die to the venom (needless to say this was extremely reckless and ill adviced). Also in the anime's fillers, Joeys worst performances and most unimportant duels are the ones where he over uses his die roll and coin flip effects (against the Judgman's hacking the dice results or against Grandpa's Ancient Dragon or Ziegfried's Valkyries). On the other hand, Joey's best performances are where he displays mostly non-luck based plays dressed with a tiny bit of a luck-based card to pull things through. It is not the gambling element itself that'd be painted badly but the excessive reliance on it. The "addiction" part of "gambling addiction" that his father has. No total rejection or getting totally lost into it.

Been saying this for a long time. It's the IRL game that failed to become accurate enough to portray the anime/manga events, not the other way around. Duelist Kingdom clearly had a lot of technicalities that could have been added IRL for the so called "expert mode" variants, but it would have made the game a bit too complicated for mass appeal back when most players IRL weren't bothering to learn the normal rules as it was. Players nowadays might scoff at the concept of "cavemen Yugioh" being complicated, but many of us didn't even know what the S/T icons were for and played Monster Reborn as a quick spell for a long time, even more so for people like me that got Starter Deck Kaiba in English back in 2002.... in Mexico, not knowing English. xD

It was mentioned earlier, but while discussing Mai, Bandit, and Pegasus cheating I find it important to again go back to season 0. Yami would function as a karmic punishment to bullies using underhanded tactics to push around those smaller than them. As the King of Games, cheaters was seen as one of the lowest in his court. Often it was only when people cheated, that he would give his karmic punishment and expose them. With this in mind the Duelist Kingdom Arc, not only, embodies the core ideals of the original series, but also pushes and expands on them.
