NACLO 2019 (C) Here in One Hand
We do the problem "Here in One Hand" for NACLO 2019 (North American Computational Linguistics Olympiad), a competition for high-schoolers in North America.
This problem was hard, to be honest. As a linguist, I had to make several assumptions about the number system to even break into the problem. It's not straightforward.

Although you've said it is simpler to use "or" for the words 'unless' and 'either', it breaks a rule of semantics: the meanings are not the same anymore! "Either I leave or you leave" breaks down in the following: P: "I leave"; Q: "You leave". Operator: we don't know. P ? Q Given the proposition: If I leave, then you can't leave. If you leave, then I can't leave. We can translate that into: P <-> ~Q => P xor Q It's an exclusive disjunction operator at the end, not just an disjunction! The same argument can be constructed for the proposition, "I will leave unless you leave."
The exclusive disjunction is only ever implied, not entailed, in English unless “but not both” is *explicitly* stated. e.g. You’ve created additional constraints on the word “either” that aren’t inherently present in the word in order to get the exclusive interpretation. “Either 1+1=2 or 2+2=4” is a truthful sentence to most speakers, so exclusivity doesn’t exist by default in the word.
@@Trevtutor I've seen a few explications that logicians have chosen "either ... or" to mean inclusive disjunction out of conventionality at the time, so I guess you're right when limiting semantics to the field itself. But in everyday language, including books, I see less and less this same meaning being applied; thus my commentary. As of now, I believe it's helpful to include more words so that the meaning can be inferred correctly at the end: - "If either A or B..." : inclusive; - "Select either A or B..." : exclusive. Since this a linguistic issue, we will eventually redefine and no progress will be lost.
I have similar question and after doing the steps as you did, I got a free variable, what does that mean? that there is infinite many linear transformations thus vector b is in the span? or did I get it wrong?

if its a fraction how is it an integer?
can we just say that the meaning of not is just lambda P not P and it would be fine ? thank you for this tutorials
However, I can also say ‘I sleep on the bed’. So it can also be a transitive verb right? Or not? Or is it only intransitive because we have to see the minimum number of arguments a verb can take. I hope you understand my question.
Great teaching! Excellent, you helped me a lot going from propositional logic to digital logic without confusion.
Thank you so much. The explanation is very clear and easy to understand.
Draw a tree of this phrase " very near the house"
Wouldn't it be a type error rather than a syntax error? If function expects input int int and receives float int?
OHHHHHHHH
your handwriting is messy af bro
I think this finally made the principle click for me. Also thank you for addressing the circular reasoning argument. That's something I always struggled with.
Logic is important in logic.
Wish I could up vote this video unlimited times - you are a boss at explaining everything
But 3 + 2 is not a formula, it's a term. You can't say 3 + 2 is true or false, therefore not a formula. Right?
Great explanation!

Dear @trev tutor, thank you for your good work. It's super amazing to learn English grammar through your video lessons. During my schooling, I struggled a lot with English as a subject. Due to lack of good resources back then, I couldn't learn it the best. I scored lowest among all subjects I studied. Unfortunately, I narrowly missed securing distinction aggregate marks in my secondary. Now that it's an opportunity for me to clear concepts. Thank you again.
So clean and helpful, thanks so much ❤
I was looking for dictionary definition of pigeonhole. I didn't signed up for this. My head is all over the walls.
So good to see you, because previously the only what I heard was a voice of yours

will you ever consider making videos on second-order modal logic? I always wanted to learn it because it's the language in which Godel's Ontological Argument is written
I'll consider it, but I wouldn't count on it anytime soon. There's a lot in modal logic I'd like to get through first for progression.
Thank you
My english is weak but you explain really clear and simple and I understand well thank you❤
You have saved my degree. Thank you so much.

great video! any plan to talk about Kripke semantics?🙂
