Weighted Millet Hull Blanket Tutorial
Have you considered making your own weighted blanket? Do you know the benefits of using a weighted blanket? Making a blanket requires only simple sewing skills. Here we will explain how to do so.
This weighted blanket made entirely from natural plant products, cotton and millet hulls. There are no glass beads or plastic pellets in this blanket, just our millet hulls grown on organic fields in Colorado. These entirely natural products will ground you and soothe you into sleep.
Millet hulls are the quietest of all the hull fills and the smoothest. They do a great job holding their place and will not shift on their own until you shift them. Millet hulls also make a temperate blanket. Because of their hollow convex shape, they retain no heat but leave space for airflow between them.
This weighted blanket provides all the benefits of deep touch therapy that studies show are a great tool to have in your health kit. Our bodies responds to the synthetic hug of a weighted blanket by releasing oxytocin, just as it does when we reach out for support and get a real hug or give one. Weighted blankets also stimulate the body's release of serotonin, which is the precursor to melatonin, both hormones being part of the sleep cycle. Serotonin initiates the body's desire to sleep and melatonin causes sleepiness. These hormones provide our body's a natural way of being soothed by a weighted blanket.

DIY a Natural Wool Pillow

Making your wool pillow is as simple as rolling up a carded wool batt and inserting inside a zippered pillow case. Wool is an amazing fiber with natural properties: 1. Antimicrobial: stays clean and doesn’t harbor odors 2. Not habitable to dustmites: because it maintains an even temperature, dustmites don’t find it attractive 3. Temperature regulating: its hollow fiber is conducive to air flow ...

Beautiful job! I had no idea such natural options were available for mattresses.
I’m allergic to latex 😢
I surely hope that your encasement Zippers are of the highest quality!? Especially considering that we will be zipping off the top portion a few times a year to wash. Zippers guaranteed?
This is so awesome to learn about. Bet you don't ship outside the US / to Europe though. 😕
THANK YOU !!! I WILL CHECK OUT YOUR SITE FOR A FUTURE PROJECT. THIS WAS A WELL MADE, EASY TO FOLLOW VIDEO. 👍👍👍👍👍
i love thats theres grass in the wool im sold
So glad I found this! And you're local!
Thank you for your video. And a special thanks for wearing a lapel microphone. Many videos use a microphone that is mounted on the camera or just use the micrphone on the cell phone and then talk from some distance away and it sounds far with an echo. I like the idea of building my own mattress mainly due to cost. We just purchased a mattress from a Mattress chain store and paid $2300. That is too much for a mattress. I like a very firm (almost rock hard) mattress with some give of course. Is it possible to build such a mattress? I watched this video and it looks like the mattress will be soft. Can a hard mattress be made with your products? Please let me know. Thanks again for the video.
would this be comfortable enough for an adult visiting? Like a temporary mattress one could use?
I doubt this will get answered as it’s a long ago question , but how many bats of wool would it take to equivalent the quilted topper
Sorry I don’t mean topper I meant ticking
wool is naturally fire retardant. The ignition temperature of wool is very high. wool is also warm. i'm a cold sleeper so this is the way to go for me.
I went on the link and couldn't find that role of wool.
What a beauty.
I love your site! Can I make a topper? I have a bad hip.
Is one slab of latex enough for a 200 lb adult?
I appreciate this. Will say that I am very allergic to wool. And it is a problem for many, yet so many of the natural ones have both cotton and wool. Bummer Everything I need to get in terms of furniture now seems to have something harmful in it. I need a different planet.
Interesting! I will reach out!
I’d like to know what brand of clear bags you used
Your website won't open.
This was fascinating. I'm going to need a new mattress soon and don't want synthetics and chemicals. The formaldehyde and other toxins have had me waking up with my organs hurting! Not good! One problem for me is that our mattress size is something called an Olympic Queen. It's 6" wider than regular queen and is the absolute perfect size for us and our room. Would you be able make that custom size? Also, what about wool allergies? Is that common? And I always thought wool was very warm. I live in Hawaii and the cooler the better! Also, do you ship to Hawaii? Mahalo for any extra info!
For those sadly allergic to will do you sell and alternative like bamboo?
you should not attempt to make a pillow or you can end up with a bad neck ! leave it up to the professionals because they know how to make proper pillows !
Nonsense. This isn't rocket science.
@@brianmatthews4323 as they say pillows are way more complex than people think and if it was easy then everyone would do it. yes it is not a rocket but no one would sleep on a rocket so that does not make any sense !
@@thethinkingman- Watch a video and you will see that they are not complex at all. Better yet, open up one of your pillows and see how simple they are. We shouldn't encourage "learned helplessness", "tyranny of the experts", or dependency. My grandmother and great grandmother made pillows. The average person from those former generations were way more capable than the average person today because we have been conditioned to think what you just expressed. That everything is too hard for us, and we should leave it to the "experts". The "experts", of course, love this kind of mindset. The truth is that we are far more capable than many of us think, and many things aren't as hard as we've either imagined or been led to believe. Some things very well should be left to the experts, as they require very special skills and training, but not things like making a pillow. Also, you need to build the skill of risk assessment. You made it sound like there was some danger in trying to make your own pillow. Just what would that danger be? You might make an uncomfortable pillow? As for the idiom, "it's not rocket science", not making sense, sure it does. Have you never heard that expression before? I didn't make it up. It simply means "it's not as complicated as you're making it out to be." See, that makes perfect sense.
@@brianmatthews4323 as they say if it was easy everyone would do it ! i rest my case !
@@thethinkingman- What a foolish post. Why do you call yourself "the thinking man"? You're not thinking at all.
Does the wool smell strong?
90% Polyester topside tic with wool fill I think is my favorite.
To be completely honest I love polyester over 100% cotton. That cool smooth feeling can't be beat. Also when somebody says something's made with 100% cotton and then immediately mentions it being made with wool I go cross-eyed
I like this video better than the other one cutting the top layer off. Just do this and leave the original layer on I will be buying these products thank you very much for the video
Very expensive

For the price of the supplies on your website I could just go test out and buy a mattress that feels a million times better...
Looks great! Love this idea.
I just saw a convencing ad for a purple mattress..👀
Nice plastic bags
I'm wondering if I can use a quilt batting as a batting?
I'd like to purchase the materials but your website is no longer available :(
It was just down for a few hours. It is available again.
I love your attitude
Awesome video, always wanted one but there so expensive
They do come with their own price sticker, BUT DIY is less expensive than many out other companies there AND natural and organic latex (not synthetic) has double the lifespan of a traditional coil mattress.
“Just like sheep” Love this Clever little Americans
you are a good woman
just what part did you do it yourself???
Tell me. How often do you get the chance to not only pick what goes into your mattress but also to assemble it yourself? That is DIY.
My question is it hot? I sleep hot and just concerned about hot sleeping
I just placed an order for my son's bed, thank you!!!
Wishing him much comfort!
Why do you put the wool under the latex?
Wool on a mattress can have two different functions. It can either function for comfort or for protection. Wool put only on the top of the latex would provide comfort, especially if it is double layered. A single layer is not very perceivable. Wool wrapped around the latex, both top and bottom now provides a barrier between the latex and elements that cause degradation, i.e. poor air quality, sunlight, heat (from a body or venting). A thick barrier, whether in loose wool like our batting wrap or stitched into ticking like in our Quilted Ticking, provides a filter, a darkness, a barrier between though elements and the latex and thus extends the life of the latex.
P.S. Is natural latex hot to sleep on?
No to most people. Memory foam is hot to sleep on, however latex is still a foam and while it is the most breathable of all bedding foams, unlike a spring mattress, it does not consist of fabric surrounding inches of air, which takes a while to heat up. I wrote an article on memory foam vs.latex vs. spring mattresses here. www.diynaturalbedding.com/on-memory-foam-latex-and-spring-mattresses/
I've spent literally thousands on exorbitantly priced crap mattresses that sag after a literally few nights. Anyone who's working towards self-sufficiency re mattresses is bringing us a step closer to disempowering these companies, and has my vote.
jenny....how much do you weigh lmfao...or maybe u gettin hella soft mattresses that sink ....got to get firmer ones...sorry but i dont buy ur sobe stories of good quality mattresses somehow just breaking after a few nights.......
@@misshiss4040 I don't care whether you 'buy' it or not, and don't appreciate the inference that I must be fat! It's happened many times, mostly with Harrison (now Harrison Spinks) beds. I thought I'd been unlucky until I recently read the reviews. I read a 'sob story' from a couple who bought a Vera Wang bed and mattress which lasted 2 nights before sagging. In general, the UK doesn't produce fit for purpose mattresses anymore. I've just bought a 2nd hand Relyon mattress from Ebay that's about 35 years old. It's the closest thing I could find to one of the decent mid-range ones from the same make that was bought in the early '90s (before mattress production went down the nick.) It's great - and has proved my theory about modern beds. Where in the UK do you buy your mattresses from, or are you just trolling?
@@misshiss4040 How rude. You woke up on the wrong side of the mattress.
Same here
Cannot express how truly impressed I am with your presentation of this item. I have been agonizing over the prospect of acquiring a new mattress. You give me hope that there is a viable alternative to the standard choices. I wish you every success. Many thanks.
So glad we can offer inspiration and options. The option of choice is in your hands.
Could the wool fiber possibly penetrate the zippered enclosure ? Wool tends to be a bit itchy for me and was wondering if cotton could be an alternative? I noticed you are out of stock on cotton.
Cotton batting could be wrapped around the latex to protect it from the elements. Yes, we are out of stock on the cotton batting (though not any of our cotton fabrics). There is a term for wool penetrating the fabric and that is migration. Yes, wool can migrate through fabrics with lower thread counts than 230. Not only do we not have a fabric with that low of a thread count, all of our fabrics have been tested with the wool and no migration is present.
What size natural latex do you use for a huge adult person? Why not use a cotton sheet to contain the wool as in making a square pillow? Can you sew (like a saddle stitch) with jute into the latex to keep wool from moving around?
When selecting depth of latex, the general rule of thumb is 3" per 90 lbs. The heavier you are the firmer you want to choose because it will softer to you than to a lighter person as you sink in farther. More information on choosing firmness is available here in The Banana Test www.diynaturalbedding.com/the-banana-test/. Yes, you could separate the wool from the latex with a cotton sheet, but then you have slippery wool. Either choose that you don't mind some wool fibers migrating into the latex or choose the quilted ticking which has the wool quilted into between two layers of fabric. The wool needs to either stick to the latex or be quilted or tufted to keep it from shifting. The Quilted Ticking is available here. www.diynaturalbedding.com/product/quilted-ticking/ One or two wraps of wool will not move around or shift. If you are making a topper with 3 or more layers of wool, you will want to tuft it. More info on that process here. www.diynaturalbedding.com/tuft-wool-mattress-or-topper/
