    THIS is why old Skool racers are the best. They can deal with track conditions that millennials can’t.

    Oh man! I qualified for this race when I got 3rd in 4wd at my regional event in Maryland. I couldn’t afford to travel to Michigan so had to just wait for the RC CAR ACTION magazine that month to see the event and results. I miss those fun years.

    They need to bring back dirt tracks that have all the real features of OFF ROAD racing like this one! Watching this video further reinforces the nostalgia of reading rc car magazines that covered the IFMAR championships. Like others said, seeing roost being thrown is a must in off road racing. I wish they would get away from the high bite traction racing.

    I don't think masamis cat looked any better than the rest of the field, looks like it struggled in the bumps especially in the first heat, he was fortunate to win it all. I thought Kyle reed had the best looking car

    Now these are race tracks. Loose, loamy, unpredictable and “fast”. Anything can happen to anyone. Wish these types of tracks would make a comeback. These are the tracks that made people like Brian Kinwald (RIP) smarter and more adaptable. These are the tracks that made young guns think critically.

      And that's a problem _why?_ If anything, an unpredictable track makes it less about your car and setup and more about car control and adapting to conditions, which is better for close, skillful racing. Nothing against the Mini4WD guys but if you want your racing to be determined by setup and build then maybe you'd be better off with those instead of RC.

    What a great and iconic track to host a worlds event on. The Worlds of today just seem like a very well-attended club race. No sense of something special, no pageantry. Nothing to suggest it’s anything other than a normal club race.

    Panasonic scr or sce sub-c cell batteries. 7.2v 6 cell or more likely 8.4v 7 cell packs. all these dudes had all the goodies. hand-wound custom motors, plus the 8.4v 7cell packs = pretty fast. it was the runtime that got 'em back in the old days. you could only maintain a charge for 4 or 5 minutes back then.

    • @ctsd623
      @ctsd623 Před 2 lety

      7 cell packs weren't legal, it was 6 cells only for IFMAR and ROAR. And Sanyo made SCE (yellow) and SCR (red) cells, and the subsequent SCRC (black) cells that give the best of both worlds

  • @nsbob70

    What kind of batteries and motors were these guys using? I've been in the hobby quite awhile now myself, and remember Lipos coming out, and brushless motors coming in to play, and they were both past 1991, for consumer, regular guys like me, anyway. Did these guys get hands on goodies, cuz those cars sure look like they move out nicely for a brushed motor! I did notice the battery pack shot in the beginning, and that's no Lipo.

    • @twopopsaqullu9721
      @twopopsaqullu9721 Před 5 lety

      The batteries were 1500 milliamp sanyo cells but probably had 1800 actual milliamp because they were the best of the best saved for the top racers .

    • @PeTroL420
      @PeTroL420 Před 5 lety

      They used 540 sized brushed motors that were hand wound and they were in the 11 to 13 turn range. As far as the batteries, they were Sub-C sized but I believe they still used NiCads in 1991 and had 1800mah. I'm a little hazy about the batteries but what I do remember was that you wanted to get a set of Matched batteries if you wanted to be competitive. Matched batteries were batteries that were put in a machine that would charge the batteries at something like 5 amps but then then would discharge at 20 amps! This cycle was repeated a number of times and then the final time they did it, they printed a little label with the amount of time in seconds that it took to discharge that cell at 20 amps and then they would group the batteries in a set of six and those six batteries had similar discharge times. This was done so the voltage of each battery would drop at the same time so the effect you had was a car that would be going fast and then slow down to a crawl when the battery pack ran out of juice where Unmatched batteries would gradually lose voltage instead of a sharp drop because there are cells that are discharged before the other cells so the battery pack gradually loses voltage instead of dropping all at once. Also, the Matched batteries with the longest run times went for a lot of money.

      @@robertturnip7850 Matched batteries was very good back then. When the lipos became aviable, the nimh batteries was low priority and was not of good quality. And has been ever since. The only "good" nimh batteries today is from Traxxas, Reedy, LRP / Nosram and Team Orion. A matched pack cost 80-90 bucks back then, when a ok basher pack cost 30-40,- After each run, you discharged each cell individually down to a spesific voltage. After charging the battery, they allso boosted the pack, with a bigger pack, to push in as much power as possible just before race start.
