The Negro Leagues were inferior competition. It works both ways, great hitters means inferior pitchers. Jackie Robinson hit .375 in his rookie Negro League season. He moved on to MLB and hit an excellent .297. That’s a 78 point drop. Hank Aaron hit .366 in his rookie Negro League season and then hit .280 in his MLB rookie year. That’s a 86 point drop. Larry Doby played a few Negro league season (officially 5). In 1947 he played in both leagues. He hit .354 in the Negro Leagues and .156 in MLB. A 198 point drop. He is a career .340 hitter in Negro League baseball yet only a .283 career hitter in MLB. Citing Negro League stats were they are hitting .466 is ridiculous.

Called up implies that the Negro Leagues were recognized by MLB which is not! NL records are even more esteemed than MLB when include degree of difficulty of NL has to play under!

Just count the stats as pro baseball overall stats. The Negro Leagues and the MLB were two different leagues. Combining the records and acting like they were one league is just dishonest, no matter how well meaning. It's just not true.

I think there was a lot of dumb in these comments. What we call MLB is merely the pairing of two pro leagues that had the highest caliber of players at the time. The only reason the negro league even exists is because these players couldn't play in those other two leagues.

There should be at least an asterisk next to these statistics especially since no one knows if these numbers are correct!!!!

I am not impressed with this act by MLB. This should have been done decades ago. It almost feels like this is a posthumous act which is usually how Black accomplishments are recognized in this country. I am more concerned with tangibles than symbolism. More should be done to address why Blacks born in this country are being run out of the sport on and off the field. We are non existent when it comes to covering the game on the national level. The MLB Network is a joke when it comes to being diversified with its hiring practices. The melanated people that are hired either don't have a strong voice in the sport or don't last long on the network. The effort to get more Blacks to be interested or participate in baseball basically comes from a few players and not the sport itself.

The only real point of contention is the difference in the number of games per season for each league. There were more than enough interleague exhibition games and success of Negro league players within the MLB to undisputedly show the parity in talent.

Instead of integrating Negro Stats that aren’t 100% accurate (which is a whole other discussion) MLB should worry why black participation in the sport continues to decrease. In 1975, 18% of MLB was black (that was a better % than black population in the country). In 2024, only 6% of MLB is black. The 2022 World Series was the first post-integration era to not have a black player on either roster. But let’s do the things that make people feel good instead getting to the root of the problem that the black community doesn’t care about Baseball like they did 30-40 years ago.
