Is polishing opal with a nail drill possible? Let's find out!
Thanks a lot for sharing. I've wondered this for a few years now because it's so similar to carving fire agate. Though FA is quite a bit harder and the color layers are much thinner, I couldn't see why this isn't a common practice. Maybe most people just dont share their methods. Either way, this confirms my new approach to boulder Opal. Much respect. Subbed
Thank you for your feedback. I am confident this process is transferable to other gemstones, shell, wood, etc. The only difference maybe the use of different abrasive papers or cloth.
Very nice specimen of Mintabie Opal. Very nice 👍 It is my understanding that Opal is no longer being mined in Mintabie, so a specimen like that of that size and quality is even that much more important for future generations to enjoy and see.
Thank you for your feedback. I think there is still limited mining in Mintabie. All the miners I knew from there have move to Coober Pedy. There are a few other pieces I have done and shown on our CZcams channel and they all turn out well.
My opal looks just like the one u have. Same cut and colors. ....the crystal opal. Green and blue
Thank you for your feedback. Green and blue, two of my favourite colours. 🙂
What is the thickness of each individual blade? What's the kerf width? Thank you for showing!
There were 2 different thicknesses 0.005" and 0.004". Thanks for watching.
מדהים 👑👑👑 💖
Thank you for watching.🙂
I’ve got a fist-size piece of iron rock with opal veins & a smooth feeling swirl pattern that covers a large area on most sides. I have no idea what to do with it or if I could try to polish a small section to satisfy curiosity. If I decide to polish a small section, it’ll be after a lot of “watch & learn” videos like yours, then practice runs. It seems different to gemstone polishing. Honesty in today’s society has become a rare quality so trust follows if you don’t know the right person for the job.
Boulder opal can be tricky, even when you have experience on your side as no two pieces are the same. Some times its a case of taking it easy and going gently and other times the quick tap of a hammer does not go astray. This could be a serious learning curve for you. I am sure it will have a positive outcome either way.
Is it soft material?
Thanks for watching. The sections with light colour are soft. The darker lines are harder.
As I contemplate taking the plunge into a cabber.,then I find this....oh btw.,I bought a kit👍🏻
Thanks for watching and making a purchase. 🙂
Fungsi nya untuk apa pak,??
I use black jade, basenite (basalt), or black Oregon opal limb casts as backing.
I encourage the use of a similar hardness for backing. I have seen opal lift off jade over time.
I have a small question, since we need the background to be dark, why is it important to use epoxy that dries clear? Isn't it for our advantage if we found absolute black epoxy?
Or is it just colored epoxy that works against us?
Thanks for your question. The clarity of the the epoxy is important for gluing on of the cap. The base is not so important as long as it is a quality one and I would recommend a 24 hour curing epoxy.
@@diverseopalproducts Thank you 👌🏻
Amazing video. Thank you. I wish you had larger ones tho.
Thanks for your feedback, its appreciated.
@@diverseopalproducts Let's say I want to order one of these, is there anyway that you can make ones that are a bit larger? I mean, I would love to have both options, of course, the way you cut them determines if that's feasible or not. Much appreciated.
@@diverseopalproducts Also I couldn't find anything on your online store, can you please link me or is there anywhere else I can look? Thanks again.
@@EpicsodeOne Thanks for the follow up. Unfortunately, I am not able to supply any sanding discs larger than 19mm. If you follow the link you will find all items related to the kit. www.ebay.com.au/itm/144527331611

I been working with opal
Hi Robert, I have been doing similar, difference being I use a rubber backing disc with velcro hooks attached with felt glued to the back of wet and dry paper of the same grits as you are using. Benefit I find is there is no screw head protruding.
Hello Ed, thanks for your feedback and comments. I have considered a similar way of attaching the disc.
Great job, and opal l😃👍👍👍like all the time. you are the best opal cutter on the net indeed.

I've used this process for years on other rocks ,I have always been a but gunshy to use it on opal. Also I use the wet method. Thanks for sharing though
Thank you for your feedback. I can understand your concern but I believe if you are using a quality silicon carbide abrasive and change when it becomes worn, you may avoid damaging the opal.
@@diverseopalproducts well it's definitely worth a Crack, thanks for the reply 👍
Absolutely ! This was a fantastic tutorial of how to produce doublets. Very well put together and explained processes. I can only imagine how much great Opal might have gone to waste before doublets and triplets were invented. And while they may not be examples of solid Opal, at least the millions of years worth of creation aren’t going to waste, and are an affordable option for someone who’s not as blessed as others.
Thanks for your feedback and comments. Yes, its a great way of making use of that thin seam material that has great colour. It's possible to make use of all opal, we just need to be creative.
Hello Robert, I have a question for you sir. Are the pendant mounts you used available for purchase ? Or did you make them yourself ? This looks like something I’d like to add to my skill set. Thank you for your time.
Thanks for your question. You can find the link for the blanks under the video, in the description.

How interesting! So cut in half it would have been an opal 'eye' ?

Thank you for your encouraging feedback. 🙂
Thank you for your channel, I learned a lot. I have one question; I have a triplet and there are scratches on the clear cap. What would be the best way to remove the scratches, also I don't have machinery? Regards John M
Hello John, thanks for your feedback and question. I will assume the cap is either glass or quartz. Without machinery it's going to be a hard process. If the cap is quartz, its going to be a very hard process. It is possible to do it by hand on wet and dry paper, keeping in mind the paper needs to be good quality going and as fine a grade as possible, using it wet. Maybe a #5000 grit. Then polish on cerium oxide. If the colour of triplet is not "A" or Gem it may not be worth all the effort you will need to put in. Hope you have success.
Thank you for the reply Robert, I would like to send you some photos just to make sure this is right but it is not allowing me.@@diverseopalproducts
@@johnmartorana3295 Just as a follow up, it will be best to dop your triplet onto a piece of dowel or nail head with a 5 minute epoxy which can be taken off in hot water after. In this way you will have better control of the triplet.
thats andamooka crystal opal with potch. nice piece
Could you possibly put the opal on a dop, and put the dop in a vice to hold it? Prevent injury, even that small.
Thanks for your question. Yes, its a good idea to dop small stones and secure the dop to work around the stone. We do that from time to time.

What a Beauty! I keep seeing videos of people cutting Mintabie opals that have beautiful looking bars from the side, but they just don't face. Yours is a great surprise. It's really nice to see that for a change.
Yes, Mintabie opal can be a bit like that at times.

So pretty
What about the white cloud?
I think it's from the ridge, but I'd have zero clue as to which field. Looks like it must've been formed when a violent flood filled the cracks or something. Looks like a story of a storm
Amazing little piece. Doublet or not, what a cracker!
I sand my stones by hand start with 400 grit end with 15,000 grit. Diamond paste 35,000
Thanks for your feedback. There are many ways to achieve a good finish on opal. I am sure these fine grits would make that possible.
