The 1944 Sonatina is dedicated to Leo Sowerby's student Darwin Leitz, long-time organist of Trinity Church, Fort Wayne, Indiana. The first movement, In a Placid and Easy-Going Manner, consists of sixteen variations over a six-bar ground bass. Unlike the passacaglia theme from the Symphony, this theme is written in mostly eighth-note motion, giving the effect of a walking bass. The overall affect of the piece is rather like a walk through downtown Chicago! Long-time Sowerby champion Ronald Stalford remarked how “Gershwin-esque” Sowerby’s music is, and added with a twinkle in his eye, “or perhaps Gershwin’s music is ‘Sowerby-esque.’” The famous Very Slowly is the most Art-Deco or “Gershwin-esque” of the three movements; here Sowerby writes a torch song of endless phrases for the organ. The final and most unusual Fast & Perky is a kind of Rondo; Sowerby the bandmaster is in evidence here, a country fiddler and a jazz clarinetist are never far away!I.

One of my favorite hymns. When our parish really pushed to get the congregation to sing at Mass (during the Vatican II Council. I was 11 years old), we started with four hymns and this hymn was the recessional. The parish NEVER changed those four hymns because no one thought the congregants would want to learn new hymns. Only one Sunday Mass (ut of four) had different music because it was a High Mass and the choir sang. Years later while in high school, I had learned to play the organ and played those same four hymns for three masses every Sunday for two years! Now, 55 years later, I wonder if they are still singing those same4 hymns?!

Another stunning video from Joe. Thank God this incredible organ has an organist in Mr. Dwyer who loves it enough to know what music fits it like a glove and can register the piece this beautifully. Having heard this organ in person at the AIO convention several years back, I am delighted with how well its’ sound has been captured here with such expertise. Please keep these videos coming and thanks be to the Advent church for preserving and maintaining this landmark instrument- so very important to our heritage of American pipe organs.

Another great improvasation by Mr. Latry. Btw other pipe organs might be bigger but nothing beats the Cavalier Coll and its 32' bombarde for sheer power and guts..

Olivier Latry will be in Adelaide Australia on July 15 2024. Pilgrim Uniting Church has the largest pipe organ in South Australia. A wonderful moment in Adelaide history to hear such a talent at his craft.
