MY FILIPINO DAD 🇵🇭 Talking about what it means to be FILIPINO today
zhlédnutí 522Před měsícem
My Filipino dad surprised me by sharing his thoughts on what it means to be a Filipino. I've watched him go from identifying as an American only, leaving his Philippine identity behind, to today, fully embracing the wonderful altruistic nature that defines Filipinos all over the world. I'm so proud of this conversation, just like I'm so proud of my family and our heritage. Like my dad says, "th...

    I think you can get dual citizenship in the Philippines . Like my kids if they wanted to be dual citizens they have to fly to the Philippines and apply for there. Because same as your parents . I am American citizenship before they were conceived.. America won’t give you any. But Philippines does. Just like thialander folks. I have a friend who is mother is American citizen but she was Tia . So her kids fly and stayed in the Tia for a month and applied dual Tia citizenship. And she got it. So all Asia will give you that as long as you have money .

I recently dug up some old documents about my Filipino-Chinese paternal grandpa, and realized that he had a Sephardic Jewish surname all along (until he was trapped in China while on vacation, but that’s another story). I had photos of my great-grandma (his mom) and she didn’t look exactly like Filipino nor Chinese either. Their migration history and location also aligns with the migration of Sephardic Jews in the Philippines. Still trying to process this but yeah, thanks for sharing your story! Was a geeky no/minimal make-up person till chance comments became very hurtful; finally, during the lockdown I started learning make-up from videos and swear by concealers now. However, this past fortnight or so has seen me rebelling against the need for make up every day and therefore, slightly depressed. Was reconsidering the Derm guy again just last evening. So this means a lot. I again accept that though I can keep it at bay there’s no leaving it behind and make up must remain my buddy. Along with good skin care, of course. Will try your technique. Thanks again!

    You are qualified to acquire dual citizenship as an American and Filipino citizen. Your parents may have acquired US citizenship, but they are Filipino citizens under Philippine law. The requirement to be a Filipino citizen is that your biological father is a Filipino citizen (before 1973), or, one of your biological parent is a Filipino citizen (after 1973). BOTH your parents are Filipino citizens, since they have birth certificates showing their parents (your grandparents) are Filipinos (as reference by you in the video since they "only migrated" from the Philippines and were not born US citizens). The mistake is, you are referencing US laws. STOP THINKING OF US LAWS. Remember, US laws don't even recognize dual citizenship. The Philippines, however, does recognize dual citizenship. And by all instents and purposes, under Philippine law, as evidence by your parents' BIRTH CERTIFICATE (bring these when you apply at the Philippine consulate near you), CONGRATULATIONS, you may acquire Filipino citizenship. Now get that dual citizenship recognized. Walang anuman po. You are welcome! Congrats!

    Decolonization is a difficult thing to achieve because we have been occupied by Spaniards for 333 years and then Americans took over for 50 years. What we need to do is to dig deeper to our own culture and history pre colonial era. The root word of colonization is colon. After you eat a big meal,during digestion the food is getting processed to your large intestine before you poop it out. So technically, these colonizers pooped out their culture to us! Ugh, it’s gross and how will we decolonize?

    • @TESZMillan
      @TESZMillan Před 28 dny

      Haha! Great metaphor for explaining a long complex situation in our history. I think what you’re describing is like constipation. We need a laxative (aka conversation and learning about our history) to help us process and literally/figuratively digest what has happened. This way, we can finally let that $h!t go and move on to a better way of being and representing ourselves in this world. Your comment is an important contribution to helping us process. So thank you! Salamat po! 😊💩💛

      @@TESZMillanPre Colonial Philippines must be talked about. It shouldn’t be a taboo. While, I am searching more about pre colonial, I found out it contradicts the catholic religion and I was like oh! No wonder they did not teach it in school because, “ I survived Catholic school in the Philippines.” This is the main reason history lessons starts when Magellan discovered the archipelago. The issue that really triggers me is about our people, a lot of filipinos claim that they have spanish blood in them. I said no! Spaniards enslaved us! Why would I incorporate my bloodline to the rapists, murderers and land looters! These filipinos who claim that they have spanish blood must submit a DNA test! I know I have Chinese in me on my dad side and I told my mom that I have to take a DNA test and see if my grandfather has spanish in him. I cannot claim that until I get the results. I am proud of my brown skin and I really despise Spaniards!

  • @josephcada8888
    @josephcada8888 Před 28 dny

    Oh yeah Enrique Iglesias is half- Spanish- half Filipino because his mother is a Filipino and his features are really more Spanish than Asian. All I can say is, to some Filipinos please don’t claim that you have spanish blood unless you can prove it to DNA test. Spaniards did not inter mix with Filipinos. We were abused and discriminated! Just to let you know Spaniards are like shit stains that they just don’t go away and it is so unfortunate that we cannot just detach ourselves from them ugh!

    But majority of the soldiers stationed in the Philippines during the spanish colonization were Mexicans..not Spaniards

      From what I’ve read, you are partially correct. Many of the soldiers did indeed come from Mexico, however, they originally came from Spain before settling in Mexico before then landing in the Philippines. I think there was a mix of both Spanish, Spanish-Mexican and Mexican soldiers in the Philippines.

    You can. Actually, by naturalization process. Even full Americans or full whatever country they're from, they can apply by naturalization process. It's mostly done in sports. A famous Canadian and also a Syrian CZcamsrs in the Philippines did this process too. They're Filipinos now by naturalization. Dual Citizen's it is, I know for the Canadian, I don't know about the Syrian if Syria accepts dual citizenship or he already took off his Syrian citizenship and replaced it by becoming a Filipino citizen. But yeah, I think it can work out for you. Search about it.

      You are correct - I was simply hoping for the “easier”, less complex way to gain dual citizenship like many of my friends whose parents were still Philippine citizens when they were born. Since this is not an available option for me, naturalization is the one way I could gain dual citizenship.

    The consensus among serious Filipino history scholars and writers is St. Malo was likely settled in the early eighteenth century, sometime between 1820 and 1840. The 1763 date was included in a book published in the 1980s and was based on a dubious source. Unfortunately, the mid-seventeenth century date has been widely cited in subsequent publications. This in no way diminishes the historical importance of St. Malo or the courageous Filipinos who settled and thrived in the “reedy swamps south of Lake Borgne.” They carved out a living under difficult conditions, competed and worked alongside other ethnic groups, some hostile, survived hurricane disasters and other calamities, and contributed to the remarkable early history of Filipinos in North America and to the United States. Their history should be celebrated and shared with the world. Regarding Jean Lafitte, he operated a pirate enterprise based in Barataria Bay and preyed on Spanish and English ships. It is possible that some Filipinos joined Lafitte or were impressed into service as crewmembers. During the War of 1812, American Forces overtook Barataria Bay, putting an end to Lafitte’s operation. If Filipino sailors (pirates) were part of this captured group, there are court records indicating that captured noncombatants were allowed to serve for the U.S. in the war as a means to gain their freedom. There are contemporary stories about Filipinos serving as a fighting unit alongside General Andrew Jackson who were largely responsible for winning the war. Those accounts appear to be highly exaggerated or completely fabricated. It was an informative and fun video. Thank you for sharing your adventure.
