100% Shea Butter Soap Making (Unrefined Shea butter vs Shea Butter)
Cold Process liquid soap making video using sodium hydroxide using 100% shea butter. This video is compare unrefined shea butter and shea butter in soap making. Hope you enjoy this video!
Please always follow safety requirements while making soap! Sodium/Potassium hydroxide is caustic and can cause burns on skin or on mucous membranes!
Its been a while again and this time I am doing a video to compare unrefined and refined shea butter in soap making. Shea butter comes from the nut of the shea fruit and contains a good quantity of unsaponifiable fats with natural vitamines and anti-inflammatory properties which makes it a great ingredient in many skin products.
The main difference between unrefined and refined shea butter is the processing method. Unrefined shea butter will be a creamy or light yellow colour with a natural nutty scent. It is processed using handcrafted methods and have a shelf life of 24 months.
With refined shea butter, you can see it is white in appearance and it is odourless where the natural scent and colour is removed by the refining process using high temperatures and hexane. Although they still make a good moisturizer, It appears that the refining process loses the main nutrients due to high heat used in the refining process. The refining process gives it smooth, stable white colour. That is why many commercial products uses refined shea butter due to stability while many organic products uses unrefined shea butter for its earthy feel it adds to the product.
In terms of soap making, the lye needed for both is the same. In conclusion for soap making, the two traces similar in soap recipes. If you want to have a whiter soap in the end, it would be better to choose refined shea butter but if you would want all skin benefits or to create a rustic look, unrefined shea butter will be the better choice.
The recipe I am using in this video:
100% Unrefined/refined Shea Butter
5% superfat
1:2 lye:water concentration
Time stamps for the video:

0:45 Difference between unrefined and refined shea butter
