Are Sabretusk Packs Any Good in Patch 5.0? - Ogre Kingdoms Unit Focus
This time we focus on a unit that receives less love, no doubt because of Rampage, but in spite of that the unit is a fierce hitter in the fast warbeasts category, showing chaos warhounds just who is more dominant. Well, that plus Hunters can give them Stalk, Vanguard Deployment, Frenzy, Immunity to Psychology and a touch of upkeep reduction but hey who's counting!

We finally come to the Ogre Kingdoms proper version of the melee variants of the Maneaters - I did cover the Ogre Pistols for Aranessa, and I may cover them separately here, definitely will get to the RoR, but no, our priority here is regular, Ironfists, Great Weapons - the latter which is a Tier V unit in every sense, and once you start recruiting them, it's all ogre for the world. #totalwar #...

Leadbelchers are a radical departure, an Ogre Kingdoms vision of a Clan Skyre Skaven Weapons Team. Instead of warpstone flamethrowers, what you get is an unrelenting shower of modest-sized cannonballs. I have seen this unit at its worst, and from that experience, derived how to find it at its best. In the end, it is priced for what it is: an interesting, quirky, supporting force that loses some...

These guys eat archers and artillery for breakfast
So on the lore side, Ogres actually find Gnoblars to taste terrible which is why they prefer to have them as “servants” than livestock and snacks. Though they are used as emergency rations if the ogres are starving with nothing else to eat, at that point they are willing to power through the terrible taste just to survive, so Gnoblars do their best they can to keep there masters feed by finding them whatever food they can to not end up as the emergency rations.
Fur missile launched. It was stupid effective.
Just one word - Rampage
I was Suprised of how effective they are taking down pesky artillery and helicopter dwarves spam. I think they're un sung heroes.
These things are pretty good, yes, but they have a weakness worth considering. Yes, they're large, so they avoid anti-infantry, but other faction's doggos being smaller is actually an advantage. I find I tend to use spears or whatnot to defend my backline against cavalry. Against regular doggos, this is actually sub optimal. These are going to take more damage against those backline protectors than regular doggos would (so if fighting them, it is good to keep this in mind). You definitely want to keep them away from anti-large cavalry too (Ogres hate Bretonnia, eh?). Point is, Ogres only have large fast units. I suppose they're just mostly large in general, of course. It's an interesting situation. After all, if you're building an army to kill Ogres... anti-large is the name of the game. Just as much of it as you can, and even against some of their smaller seeming units, it works well. I mean, Gnoblars are okay, but they're also not a huge threat against even most anti-large units.
These are really good with Stalk, since they are so darn fast you can sneak them to rear easily, munching down on enemy artillery and range units. Combine with Ogres own artillery being very good but shorter range, it means you can have firepower superiority.
I just remember having a 6 squads of these that went insta berserk and thats all.
Damn, was actually hoping for a maneater pistol
if I find or load a saved lord with unbreakable gnoblars once I hit t3 camps I love to make half gnoblar trapper half leadbelchers armys. Leadbelchers are probably my favorite gun unit because even if the frontline dies or routs you can just use them like a skirmish unit and run around kiting and firing.plus when the front line holds well enough you can just move them to the sides to fire down along a unit and it simply murders.
I have yet to master it, but I think the running and gunning potential makes them pretty interesting.
Heyho! Good video as always. You got some good points! So, i think this is a tricky one. Better stats than ironguts but less armor. In my experience the only time i start using them is when i get the ironfist variant, because of their slightly higher armor and defence. Plus the 10 armor in the tech tree. That makes them a bit less squishy. Before that i always stay with ironguts because they are made for tanking enemys in the face. xD But they can do definetly more damage than the ironguts. Sometimes i take ironguts to attack the front and use the maneaters to attack the sides. Thats a good way to go. But you can do the same with gorgers. I think they are a Solid option with some up and downsides. They will definetly get some love in the next dlc. And i am hyped for that! The only thing i do not use that often is the great weapon variant. Because in my experience crushers with GW, and they are both t5, will do the same job against large cav and monsters, but even better. And that with higher surviveability. More HP per model, more damage, a lot more armor, charge bonus, speed and 30 bonus vs large. They punch everything large so hard that it dosent stay long. The only thing they are missing is ogre charge because they are cav. But for that you got your ironguts or ironfist maneaters. For fighting large there is nothing better than 2 units of crushers with GW. And if there is no large enemy? Then i use them to flank my enemy and attack the backline. With their really high mass they throw every enemy unit around like they wanted to play football. Keep up the good work!
Nothing bad to say about crushers so I'll cover them when I get there. As a very late game unit I haven't really used them in campaign yet. I've learned a tooooon of stuff about the campaign mechanics.
@@OffToBattle Yeah, the thing about the ogres is they need time to get started. The more Camps you got the more money you gain from your normal provinces. But it gets better every round. Its a shame the contracts are useless most of the time.
The fact that their missiles are classified as artillery shouldn't be underestimated either as shields don't protect against artillery fire, so a silver shield, for example, isn't going to do squat against them. EDIT: It also means they apply the "shot by artillery" leadership debuff, which is nice.
I continue to encounter tricksy CPU opponents working hard to melee/ bog down Leadbelchers but that's because the AI understands it's a dangerous unit type.
Nice vid mate! :D I mostly got 3 to 4 in my endgame armies. I like to use them to delete enemy range units before they can shoot. Because gunpowder and crossbow unuts are really good against ogres. But with the range the leadbelchers got you can deal with that before they can even shoot. They knock units over, so they cant shot back so easily. And the best thing, in my experience they ignore shields. Because it is considered an artilery style unit i think. They are not so good against large single targets, but a unit of GW Maneaters or crushers with GW will do the job.
These assholes are too good now - they have amazing morale, amazing armour and they can tank incoming fire - if you see them on the field, kiss your arty good bye
So most of them are good for AP and such, but aren't really super required until you get to the Greatweapon variant... and the Ogres do have other anti-large options too. I dunno. I guess if you have the money they're fine, and basically a straight upgrade to the earlier troops (fewer entities though, I believe).
Meeting Grimgor with like, six Arachnarok Spiders without stuff like that is a pain though.
@@OffToBattle That's definitely a fair point. Though I do wonder what is better for killing large beasties: Crushers/Cavalry with Great Weapons (I forget their top tier cavalry name) or these Maneaters with Great Weapons given both are tier 5, apparently?
The main thing I'll bring up here is that there is a fun visual mod that varies up the maneaters' looks. Lore says they should be going all over the world, not just pirateland.
Not surprised and good for the mod makers.
I just don't understand the decision to give mid-tier unit 100 armor and 40 armor to an elite unit. But I guess its not going to change, no matter how much I complain. Since its unlikely that CA would revamp the whole game, I would ask them to give Maneaters base 60 armor to make them a little bit more sturdy. This plus their different variants and improved MA and MD would justify an elite status
Pretty sure some factions are meant to have low armor and others high. Nothing wrong with that. They just need to buff them in other ways.
That's fine, but usually elite units in low armor factions have better armor than lower tier units. I think this is the only exception.
I think they should get ward save or physical resistance. They are insanely squishy for a T5 melee unit and wont really exchange cost effectively even with T3 spears or T4 halberds...
It sounds like GW history constrained them, at least for now, but that's why I made the heavyweight Gor Herd reference, outside of being shot at by crossbowmen Melee Defence tends to matter for more in pitched combat, but it's an interesting bunch of sidegrades.
@@OffToBattle Melee defence is tricky... Especially for monstrous units, they get surrounded and from the side and back MD is reduced significantly. So I find it much less valuable on monstrous units than you would think. Sure, sure, you should mix them with gnoblars to somewhat prevent this, but they still can get shot to pieces really fast.
Why though? Ogre monstrous cav serves the same anti-large role and it much faster unit with higher charge bonus & weapon damage..
Larger target and less models. By your logic all anti large/ap units are out classed by cav and that’s just so far from the case
I'll get to the cav when I get to it, but infantry have a better ability to collapse on a single entity monster like an Arachnarok, IMHO.
@@p.p.wienersson Anti-large cav can be really good, certainly. But yeah, other things usually have their own place.
I love the great weapon variant, but it just doesn’t hold up to the maneuverability and bone-shattering punch that Crushers bring to the table. Nowadays I use them to protect my gnoblars, leadbelchers, and artillery from cavalry charges, but from an offensive point of view they’re just too squishy and slow. Hopefully Golgfag brings some much-needed support to Maneaters as a whole, like maybe a Bruiser hero that can buff armor and missile resistance.
You bring up good points for offensive capability. The high end cavalry seems to be really powerful with this faction.
Hate these big bois!
Ah really.. why is that?
Hey love your videos. If I had to leave a survey, itd be 9/10 as my only complaint would be the first few seconds on the intro. I like the little *ding* sound at the start it's solid. But the volume of your voice is always WAY louder right after like a koolaid man/toad dragon going "OH YEAH" and then I turn the volume down xD it's not really a big deal at all but it's something I noticed thought I'd point it out. Maybe it's the mic quality or my old ass phone speakers idk. But yeah love the vids I watch every one <3
Not trying to be rude and I definitely see you were being as cordial as possible in your constructive comment, but I just played the intro back a few times to listen for the extreme difference in volume that you described and I think it might be something with your speakers. After the “ding” sound OTB’s voice seems to have a smooth transitional volume on my end. It could also have something to do with my speakers? Might be worth having him take a look just to be sure and maybe he will have an opinion on the matter after having it brought to his attention. Just thought I would add some information in the form of another perspective here. Cheers!
Yeah, it's interesting because I'm obviously listening to my own videos during the body to make sure the relationship of game audio/ music/ voice is there, but I haven't looked at intro to the rest for a while. I'll see what other people think. I do take the comments to heart and thanks for dropping in!
@@MAGS-ik5uj Other perspectives highly valued too.
@@MAGS-ik5uj Yeah it could also be the contrast of the simple intro sound and his human voice colliding in some way that, in my brain, gives me a Red X instead of a Green Check mark lol xD
I find maneaters to be a bit underwhelming, unbreakable gnoblar trapper frontline with leadbelchers firing over them can just annihilate nearly any enemy formation. Add in some greatweapon cav to protect the flanks and you get a much more economically viable army that hits way harder and sustains less (actually important) casualties. Also the trappers being hidden until they get close means that they will sustain very little casualties from enemy ranged until the lines actually clash. (The big name "Gnoblarkicker" makes the gnoblars unbreakable)
I don't mind you bringing that up again, I'm going to try hard and get that Big Name in my next campaign.
Love these big bois!
They're interesting, despite the relative squishiness in some areas. Hard hitters.
Don't forget the title tyrants can get for gnoblars. Giving all gnoblar units unbreakable! You can easily make a doomstack of gnoblar trappers that are totally unbreakable and rain all the sharp pointy sticks
I've seen now that Hunters can get that title too. There's so much buried here I didn't know because so few people hype up ogres.
Important question- when the Master Engineer is mounted in his Steam Tank, does he still fire his grenade launcher when the tank is in melee?
I'm told yes, but I haven't used them in campaign enough to see a lot of it for myself. If in doubt, Guard Mode it and I'm sure it'll fire the main gun when possible too.
What's with the late 70s naughty video music? I got concerned I had the wrong video running, so I-I mean, what video?
It sounds like that, but it's recent additions to the CZcams Audio Library... my job's just to pick them. I sure can't write music.
Im curious if Gundermans surefires are better than Ironsides for Franz?
I haven't tested that in detail but Franz boosts the elector state troops SO MUCH, my gut says yes. And at any rate you'll get a huge discount in cost.
Franz is the best Lord to use Mixed armies with since Elector Count Troops gives you so much flexibility.
Yeah, just have to keep the overall team balance in mind... Total War, Blood Bowl, they're not that far apart sometimes...
@@OffToBattle Its just doomstacking seems to be the popular way to play this game and I dont really have anything against it but Im a bit of a larper myself. So If I play empire I wanna do combined arms tactics with a multistate army.
Leadbelchers have always been one of the staple for an ogre kingdom army roster.
They seem very interesting against a wide range of targets.
What's with the dnd character sheet ass stat line I kinda like it but it's weird to see
A third party site called Total War Warhammer Stats makes them. They're popular and have useful info so I've used them for quite a while.
I love these guys as they are the Ogre’s best answer to elite anti-large infantry. I’ve had a single unit wipe out 2-3 units of Stormvermin and Black Guard of Naggarond without breaking a sweat. Just protect them with a bunch of gnoblars and they can hard carry most early-mid game battles. You’re spot on that they struggle hard against anything big enough to resist getting knocked down. Definitely a lesson I had to learn the hard way against Rakarth. Best to use either a hunter on a stonehorn or a Tyrant lord to deal with them effectively, though ogre pistols work well enough if you have some gnoblars to distract with.
All great suggestions. I tried allied units too - Chaos Dwarf Blunderbusses, though that did a number on my Cathay relations. Was still a good experiment, but they're just not the same without the CD faction buffs applying. I mean still good, but even in ambush it's hard to take down multiple plague drone death heads units. (That has come up a few times in my playing.)
They are a walking artillery- literally. Nice AP damage, great penetration, excellent against tightly packed enemies- including other ranged units. They should also be good against SEMs, especially slow moving ones.
With time I'm sure they're decent just from being anti-armor, but the penetration seems useless against fellow ogres, Plague Drones, things like that. That's a downside but the perfect need not be the enemy of the good.
Ogres feel like a rushed product- so few upgrades per unit- they should have 3-6 upgrades in campaign to dramatically improve unit performance, something that more polished factions get for their units. Hopefully DLC would address these issues. Ogres can also benefit from just adding variations to the existing units- Ironguts with Shied or Great Weapons, Leadbelchers with a weapon type more effective against single targets- Lords, monsters, etc
A loooong time ago when my friends and I played Warhammer tabletop, a new edition released and the Ogre Kingdoms were the big new army on the roster. Leadbelchers were the first unit that made all of us go "What. The. F---." They actually had a fairly short range but had an ABSURD damage potential - much like shotguns. Even the lore described them loading their cannons with whatever scrap they had on hand - swords, knives, bits of armor and shields, etc. TWW3 made some interesting changes to their role on the field, and honestly it's not bad. They're probably one of the more cost effective units in the game. As long as you keep them out of melee, they'll pay for themselves quickly.
Actually... I instantly understand the original vision matching with the actual models from what you just said. Fascinating. I mean, those guns look like they came straight off a frigate where they were used to clear the decks. My eyes were right. I'll pin the comment too.
It will always be funny to me how the leadbelachers literally carry cannons and they are somehow not artillery when they are practically empire cannons without the anti-large. And that's not even the biggest cannons they can field. Also, PS could you also do the saber tusk pack next as I think they are a very slept on ogre kingdoms unit.
Maneaters is ready to go as soon as I do the editing, but I can do sabers after. I'll have to give a strong mention to the huge Hunter buffs.
@@OffToBattle dont get me wrong I love sabertusks and hunters are amazing heros but the buffs are such dookie lmao. still though a really cool unit and they really are so much bigger than most other dogs and most normal infantry, allways great to zoom in on a hectic battle and see giant tigers eating archers/gun units.
Leadblechers are definitely a highlight of the Ogre Roster. But: WHY CAN"T THEY ATTACK WALLS! They are literally holding a CANNON!
I spent a lot of the night testing Ogre stuff for future videos and finally tried leadbelchers against a wall. Yeah.. I don't get it. Not that Ogres themselves need it with the army mechanic to smash walls but military allies will cry...
@@OffToBattle What is funny is that Leatbelchers also have a bonus versus buildings and walls.
They shooting scraps because it's easy to get
They shooting scraps because they ogres
Missile Resistance 0 is always so disappointing to see on these, when the Sea Dragon Cloak providing ranged resistance was part of their table top kit.
Ah so that really is how it worked. Sometimes CA just makes strange decisions for that stuff.
War wagons are something I throw into armies that have like a spot or two left and I have no other unite that would gel with the rest of the formation
Sure, because they can work well and do their jobs far out of the formatio...
Its basically a highly mobile Organ Gun with decent melee potential when out of ammo. Very good unit!
Yeah, I saw how the weapon strength is just fine, so as long as the army hasn't completely collapsed they can at least contribute that way.
They're one of the actually interesting/fun parts of the Ogre Roster. The "Pistol" Maneaters are more for single entities is my expectation (and what I remember).
Yeah, at the very least they don't create a wasted penetration issue. Now that I understand Ogres use Lore of Fire some of the units make sense, they expect you to use the Lore of Fire buff with missile units for certain jobs.
@@OffToBattle Sometimes you've gotta love Flaming Sword of Rhuin.
The bread and butter weapon for ogre kingdoms. Simply put, this is a unit that over preforms, and is what I consider as part of the ogre kingdoms gunpowder army. You need gnolar trappers, and leadbelchers, primarily. Tyrant distracts enemies in the front. Leadbelchers can shoot over the heads of gnoblars without line of sight issues, thus allowing you to shoot in melee with no issue. Armor peircing missles that pierce targets allows some great damage. 220 range at rank 7 means that they don't get outranged by much in this game. Boomaker big name on tyrants buffs their damage by 20%. A hunter on stonehorn to help suppourt your forces and hold the flanks, and you have yourself a very competent stack. If that hunter has gnoblar kicker to make your gnoblar chaff unbreakable? I would argue that it is one of the cheapest and most effective ogre mid to late game armies you can field. I fully disagree that they have such weaknessess described. If you use them like a traditional gunpowder unit, maybe, but since they can shoot over gnoblars heads, you can get some truly amazing volumes of fire from a safe box formation. AI can't even punish with magic thanks to ogres low model count.
I love using this army composition. Worth noting that the landmark at pigbarter gives all gnoblars poison attacks faction wide.
Good doesn't mean perfect, like any missile unit they don't do so well if successfully rushed, but I can see they have big upsides. I'll try to use them more.
@@whytho1637 It's only a bit after publishing this video I saw what the pigbarter landmark does for Ogre Kingdoms. I guess it gives something to lots of factions. I loved poison on Ungors with Khazrak...
Was there an ogre update is that why you have been making these kind of videos?
Ogre's are part of the khorne/greenskins/ogre pack coming up
@felwarksmith6239 just a coincidence, he was making them because he's never coverEd the ogres before so he decided to do it
Nope, I committed because I was FINALLY getting around to learning the faction and wondered if people were interested since the faction isn't popular to play. There was indeed interest. Mainly, my impressions are that a lot of the units are just fine, the campaign situation is counter-intuitive and takes learning certain things the hard way before you can be comfy with them. So, I've been pushing it the hard way... and learning a lot.
@@OffToBattle oh ok i just thought cos you wrote patch 50 there was an ogre update
Always find it weird how these "ogre elite guards" are for whatever reason...weaker and less elite than a bunch of rag tag mercenaries (Maneaters)
They're much tougher against anything not specially anti-armor, but Maneaters are the ones that have been the most adventurous beyond the mountains I suppose!
So, it shows I'm still unfamiliar with the faction! I was in error about the Rank 7 red line skills, Gnoblar Trappers benefit from Continuous Volley, granting speed/ range/ and sweet reload time reduction.
I heard the announcement 👀 of upcoming orge updates your videos are in good timing 😁 Btw i discover that i haven't got all units and realize there are some units that requires me to go to CA website just to download them and give them in-game, which i'm talking about chaos slaanesh mirror guard 🪞, i'm just wondering have you made a video about them? And if not are you planning to make one? Thank you in advance you're amazing total war warhammer youtuber ❤ 🙂
I actually never did do a Mirror Guard one. I think Thrones of Decay finally hit not that long after I stopped doing Slaanesh main series work, so I've barely done any of the RoR's. Thanks for reminding me of that, I really should do a video on Mirror Guard.. at first I had no idea what that was about, then I found out it had something to do with Siggy and I was like "...Ah."
Absolutely love this series, really good content
Much appreciated, because I know what kind of info I wished to have when I was going in without a clue ^^
First proper holding infantry that Ogres get. I am surprised that their mid-level infantry is armored and their elite infantry isn't. They are a major upgrade over the Bulls, and can certainly be used for flanking and sustained fighting, making them very versatile. Their armor actually allows them to defeat non-AP spears, since they will mitigate most of their bonus damage, something that even Maneaters cannot do.
Yeah, Maneaters are surprisingly squishy in their base form, but the fact you have two melee variants makes them pretty interesting at the higher tiers.. while Ironguts are what you see, what you get, and really sturdy. They and Gorgers seem to be cornerstones of the faction in a way.
It seems Ogres need to get high tier infantry that has good armor, or just get more Ironguts variants who are more elite
