    It's always amazing to me how small exercises like this can make such a dramatic difference almost immediately. Before I watched your video, I tried singing the first verse, pre-chorus, and chorus of a song I wrote a few months ago. It sounded okay but I could tell I was struggling a little on the higher notes. After doing these tongue exercises with your video, I sang the same parts again and not only did I not struggle on the higher notes, they actually felt stronger and sounded better. Thanks! It's always nice to stumble across a vocal coach online that explains things in a way that works with my brain (many don't) and who provides exercises that are simple and effective. I'll definitely be checking out more of your vids!

    Another great video! I have a question that's plagued me for ever - and I have a feeling you'll put it in a way I could understand... When singing/belting higher notes, I've heard you increase glottal/breath pressure while reducing the amount of air you're using. - Huh?! - Doesn't the whole act of increasing pressure translate into increasing the amount of air? Otherwise, how do you have more pressure unless you're holding back some of that air with your throat? So VERY confused. If you could make a video that fully explains this - I think it would help SO many people! (and of course, myself haha)

    • @natasanahtigal24
      @natasanahtigal24 Před 14 dny

      Hi, this is a great question and I definitely will do a video about it. :)) It is not about glottal pressure as much as it is about optimal vocal cord closing. You can make big sound not only from air pressure from below (which can hurt your voice if it is to strong), but also from backward pressure from above. This one helps vocal cords to vibrate optimal and also opens the pharynx to better boost our voice. That is why straw exercises can really help with the feeling of more glottal pressure but not to much air flow. Have you ever tried those exercises? Check this video: czcams.com/video/utMGP8h75nM/video.html Let me know if this answers at least some of your question. Though it is har to explain this in writing. I will do the video soon :)))

      @@natasanahtigal24 Thank you for responding!!! I have a straw from another company, but will check this one out too. I also have Dr Vox. So I have a couple things that help with SOVT exercises. Though, I never understood how that translates to singing. I do the exercises. And then when I sing - I'm just singing in the same way I always do. None of them really explain how to use the straw and bring it into actual singing. Are we able to create that back pressure while singing normally? Once we open our mouths with an AH, Oh, etc - won't the open mouth let all the air escape quickly with no backpressure? So confusing Add to this - I have MTD :'( I've had speech therapists, plenty of vocal coaches, etc - and none have helped me. I've had to figure things out on my own. Since I've had it practically ALL my life, I haven't known what it's like to speak or sing like normal people. If I ever did sing/speak normally, I have no memory of it. I thought I WAS speaking/singing normally. And coaches/therapists just assume that I'm doing what they're doing - so it's only caused deeper issues. I can't even whistle without tension! I just thought that's the way it is. Again, I've come a long way on my own by watching videos like yours. But there are a couple of key factors missing like this subject - which has been alien to me. I've come to realize I use tension in my throat to make the airway smaller in order to use less breath (instinctually). The idea of taking a breath and just letting it come out and 'letting' (as opposed to 'making') the sound form is new to me as of the last couple years. I'm just trying to piece the vocalizing mechanisms from videos like yours - which have already been VERY, VERY helpful! Ironically, "Devil Inside" by INXS has helped me a lot. You can hear him take a breath, and instantly release it into a note. When I take a breath, I first tense my throat, THEN sing. Big difference. I look forward to watching your video on this. X'ing my fingers it clicks something in my head! haha I'm almost there!!!

      Hello! Thank you for sharing your story with me, and I'm sorry to hear that you're experiencing vocal problems. I underwent vocal cord surgery a couple of years ago too, so I understand how challenging it can be, especially for us teachers. Sleep is usually beneficial for our voices, except for those who suffer from reflux. In such cases, stomach acid can reach the vocal cords during the night, causing inflammation and resulting in a tired, hoarse, or broken voice in the morning. Have you been checked for reflux? Here are some simple tips for managing reflux: Try sleeping with your head elevated by using an extra pillow, and avoid eating for at least two hours before bedtime. Let me know if you think reflux might be the issue, and I can provide you with more advice on managing it. I'm actually planning to record a video about this topic soon! :)

Is it possible to relax the tongue, jaw, neck and mouth, while also making the effort to open the back of the throat and lift soft palate at the same time?

    • @natasanahtigal24
      @natasanahtigal24 Před 27 dny

      Hi Joanne, thank you for your question! You're absolutely right; sometimes, doing too many movements can actually make us feel more tense. I believe it's really important to remember that these movements should be very small. I often say, "Singing is about millimeters, not miles." When you start thinking this way, you won't overextend your throat or raise your palate too much. It's more about maintaining a natural body position and making small adjustments. This approach also makes it easier to relax your tongue, jaw, and neck. I hope this advice helps you. Let me know if you have any other questions. Best, Natasa

      Hi :) Thank you for your question. We all have different tongues and it is nothing wrong if you can not do some movements with your tongue. It also depends on the size and position of our lingual frenulum. Sometimes that also stops the movement. But even if some movements are not as possible as others, it is great to train it. With exercises and massage you can relax the root of the tongue and train the tip of the tongue to become more moving. I will do a video with some tongue tip exercises soon :)) If you have any other questions, please let me know. Best, Natasa

      Hello, thank you for your reply. Sometimes working with recorded scales or a musician who is not a vocal coach is not the best for singers. The scales or exercises might be too high or hard for a singer, causing them to push their voice to reach the notes. It is important to be aware of how you feel while training your voice and to stop if you feel uncomfortable. Don't push it. Love your voice, and first explore the notes that are easy for you to sing, then gradually extend your range. I will talk about this topic in my CZcams live Q&A this week. Will share it with you. Wish you all the best! :) And let me know how your voice feels today. :)

      Hi Dayne, thank you for your question. The most important thing is that the back of the tongue is relaxed and that it is not pulling the tongue back. Most singers hold a lot of tension in the back of the tongue (you can check out my video about tongue - czcams.com/video/0XPwKTH5ie4/video.html ). The position of the tongue apex depends on the vowel and pitch. Tongue needs to be active & relaxed at the same time. Try to play with it. Put it more front and more back and listen to the sound of your voice. Explore what tongue position gives you the best and most opened sound. What do you mean about your second question about breathing? :))

And doctors say that there is nothing wrong with my vocal chords, except that they never close completely. It's like having a permanent sore throat and I think that it's in great part psychological - believing that I "can't" sing or that my singing is ugly and bothers the people around me.

      Thank you for your message. Did you try to massage your neck and throat and do some tongue exercises? I will record a short video for that today and let you know when it is on the channel. ;)) Also Vocal massage by massage therapist can really help with these kind of vocal tensions. Try to find some expert for vocal massage close to you & and maybe try that out too. :)) Let me know if you have any other questions. Wish you all the best, Natasa

      We all have lot of tongue tension :)) But with awareness of it and tongue exercises it can slowly become more relaxed & then singing becomes easier. Also our tongues are different, so if you feel that one exercise is not good for you, you don't need to struggle with it. Find some that you will feel that is beneficial for you. :) If you have any other question, please let me know :)

    Dear Natasa Thank you so much for your answer. Special thanks for your effort to make me understand the not easy language of singing. I really understood everything, because I have already a (not a big) knowledge of this science. I wish you luck in your really good videos. I saw many of others, but you are offering here " something New". Not to forget, as I said last time, your own "gentle" way (your person) of explaining things is beautiful! Every new start is not easy. Please have patience and stay joyful. Thanks for your new video about using the jaw. Great! Best wishes from Germany. François

    Dear Natasa, Beautiful exercise simple and in the same time really powerful! The moment is there to thank you for all your very good videos. Above all you make them really with: kindness, gentleness and ofcours with big experience and in the same you make us pay a great attention to awareness! Feeling the exercise! I'm a Tenor and love to sing the bel Canto, puccini and Co. I've seen many exercises and many people try to help. One thing still somehow a secret: how to sing the "la speranza" the high C at the end of the che gelida manina in the La Bohem and ofcours in other operas? Thanks in advance for your answer. Francois

      Francois thank you for your message and all the nice words. Means a lot :)) About your question about: how to sing the "la speranza" the high C at the end of the che gelida manina in the La Bohem? Singing extra high notes well requires a couple of things to be in perfect balance: breathing, vocal cords coordination and the right shape of our mouth. Have you ever heard about vowel tuning? This means that we shape the word in the right way so that it can resonate best. For example for this high "a", you need to have underlying "semiwovel - like in word "mum", but the shape of should be more towards "a", almost with a little smile, or I sometimes call it an upper jawn. It is hard to put this in words. It also really depends on a singer and what kind of muscle patterns they are having while singing. So it is not same advice for everybody. Some singers need more support in their body, some singers just need to lower the volume of their singing, some singers need to put more energy on their lips, and some need to relax their tongue. I hope you will find my answer beneficial. Let me know :))
