    I worked for Turbo tax. It went down hill every year little by little when the last CEO left. Every CPA and Tax attorney I knew had left. It’s almost only EA’s or not even. Actually my last manager didn’t even have an EA. Let alone no degree. 9/10 have no idea what they are doing. It’s a luck of a draw there for their customers. And to be honest they don’t even have the technology advantage anymore compared to its competitors like HR block. And many more that popped up.

    About to graduate this July with an accounting degree and so far had no luck with entry level accounting jobs. Most of them want big 4 intern experience or 3-5 years in the field. I didn’t have the opportunity to get an internship cause most wanted me to relocate and didn’t even offer housing accommodations so I turned most of them down. Even applying to bookkeeping or AR/AP roles want 5+ years of experience. Although I haven’t yet received my diploma I feel like I’ll be job searching for a while.

But just 5 years after that you will have A.I. systems doing practically all types of accounting, including advanced forensic audits.

    150 hours is NOT the problem. I haven't heard anyone I know who got their CPA complain about this. For me, its the hours in public, and then in industry it's lack of funding, skeleton crew, terrible processes, compliance, and lack of being included in any aspect of business or strategy. Most of all, I've lost complete respect for accrual accounting--which deflates ones motivation when that's literally what they do everyday in accounting.

    I think everyone is more infatuated with the tech field. The number of computer science students have gone up drastically in recent years. There is a huge surplus of people trying to enter software engineering and data science, making competition fierce in those fields. I'm one of those people who moved away from those fields and into accounting. People seem to think accounting is a major step down from tech. But in South Africa where I live, chartered accountants (equivalent of CPAs for my USA counterparts) are highly respected and paid extremely well.

    Previous accounting student here who made it to junior year and then realized I actually hated it and had no interest in it. Too many negatives within the profession compared to the supposed positives. None of the accounting students I met actually enjoyed what they were learning, they were only doing it for the money, and a lot of them seemed as depressed as I had been for a long time. I switched to IT and I’m much happier now. Until the industry is overhauled, I don’t see things getting better from what I experienced.

  • @Morgan-yo1ut

    why the heck would anyone go into accounting? Every job post for an entry level position says they want 2+ years of experience, a bachelor's degree, and a starting salary of 40-50k. Subway in my town pays $19 an hour which means you don't fall into the salary trap and will actually make more if you work the same hours as an accountant will. I even see job postings for Staff Accountants that require a master's degree and a CPA with a starting salary of $55k. I understand there is a high ceiling in accounting and I am in no way advocating the fast food industry but an ambitious kid out of high school could be managing a location in 4-5 years and multiple locations within 6-10 years. Accounting used to be a prestigious career but they are just laughed at by tech and finance due to their barriers to entry and awful salaries.

    I don't think the CPA is worth it today. The AICPA has ruined the profession. The exam is too easy now, and, like you mentioned, the uniformity of the exam is gone. The AICPA did a terrible job regulating the exclusivity of the CPA. I never understood why someone would become a CPA just to do taxes unless the designation afforded you an exclusive license to perform a particular service. There is no way CPAs should be competing with Jack in the Hat Tax preparers

I know I don’t want to work as an accountant but I might open an external audit office in the future which needs CPA and as a fresh graduate it will be much easier to take it now as i remember lots of stuff and life in general easier for me since there are not much responsibilities.

    Started the CPA (Canada) program in Dec2022, took me 1 Year to pass Core1, I am going to fail Core2 I know. I live in a small town, with 1 Preapproved program, which I recently started working for, and I am sure I will be fired on my probation period. I was thrown on the back of the office with little support. I am feeling miserable. The program is killing me, my family is suffering, I switched jobs because of the PERT and now I am going to be fired. Why all of this? I am a certified accountant from my born country and the process was not this painful. The answer for your "accounting in crisis" is that anyone can be a bookkeeper here, but to be a CPA is a suffering process. One of my friends divorced because was overwhelmed with the PEP, another friend gained health issues, I feel I passed burn out. I also saw people giving up at the beginning of Core1 saying that is that the program is insane. Just would like to add that I am 47, have a 7 yo daughter, husband, and used to have a job and a life. I know what I should do, just did not want to because requires to give up the career I built in +20years.

    After receiving my BS in accounting i went into the private sector, never public accounting. I wanted to take the CPA exam but didn't get around to it. It’s just a sucky profession. I started in public accounting 30 years ago - worked a lot of hours back then. Now 30 years later I’m a controller at a private equity owned company and work significantly more hours than I did starting out in public accounting. I personally think it’s a stupid idea to get a degree in iaccounting. That being said my wife is a Director in tax at a large financial company and she has the best work/life balance I’ve ever seen. Actually the balance seems to be the opposite not enough work and too much life.

    I am cpa eligible but any of the study programs (Becker, etc) cost over two grand and each of the tests costs 350-400 a pop. They build the tests to actively make you hate yourself with a 50ish percent pass rate per test. So you’re taking an average of 6 tests. 4500 to 5 grand to go from where I am at with my 150 hours to cpa. Some companies may pay for it or reimburse. Mine does not.

Moral of the story? You rarely "need" a CPA in the corporate world, with the one exception maybe being a department head. They prize experience and skill set over everything else.

  • @user-vr5fi8kj4y
    @user-vr5fi8kj4y Před 17 dny

    I work for a small firm with 5 employees. Public accounting doesn't have to be bad year-round. We specifically refuse accepting clients that we perceive to be sloppy with their records or ones that will likely require extensions due to the nature of their business. As a result, we complete 95-98% of all tax returns by March 15th/April 15th. Our May thru November is a 4 day workweek with Monday's off. The misery of Jan thru April is outweighed by the daily joy I receive knowing there won't be a fall busy season and I can simply coast through the rest of the year once April 15th hits. I think the whole industry needs to migrate away from the old model of tall glass office buildings with sky high rent that require a heavy year-round clientele to fund overhead. Manage your costs as a firm and you can be more tactical with your work instead of accepting every and any client who drops off a shoebox of receipts for you to make your blood boil.
