Wonderful video, thank you! I finished my first mala in two sittings. Can't wait to work on another and to refine my technique. I really enjoyed chanting a mantra while knotting it.

Thank you! What are your thoughts on the different styles with the sections (e.g., japa vs. zen)?

My personal preference is a light-medium weight mala, where all beads are the same size (7-9mm) and texture with knots between each bead. Alternating beads of the same size, like Rudraksha/Crystal also works for me, as there is consistency and regularity, so the mala doesn’t distract. Loosely strung malas (without knots) can also work fine when strung at the correct tension. A mala is down to personal taste and tradition. Some practices require marker beads or extra tassels along the mala. Some people just want a mala to wear. Each mala can be perfect for a persons needs at that time. Hope that answers your question?

I have watched many videos about how to make mala/ rudraksha mala. Among all videos, this video is the best ( best technique and best way of explanation and explanation in a very simple way ). Lot of thanks for bringing this video.

This really is the best method for getting a nice symmetrically globular knot that doesn't have the little pointy irregularities in them that make the knot lopsided and, thus, they don't sit squarely in the hole in the bead. Most of the bead knotting tutorials on here are for extremely much finer synthetic, practically invisible, knotting threads for beads with much smaller holes than the wooden beads and traditional mala designs use. The result of those other knotting techniques produce something that you can't see, between the beads, how the knot, even with a knotting tool, is lopsided, because it's so small. Those same knotting techniques, even with good silk cord, produce lopsided knots. The knots themselves are actually part of Inner Eye's more traditional design for malas and natural materials add to how a mala feels when you use it. My only personal concern is being limited to a white, contrasty, knotting color, so I'm thinking about how to match the color of wooden beads closer by dying Brahmin cotton cord with tea or coffee. I tried a lot of different methods and came back to the first and best tutorial I watched. Thank you for your guidance.

I suspect that you are making the slip knot / loop incorrectly, one day I will make a video to explain this common mistake. When you open and close the loop, if the knot tries to slide away from the bead, away from where you want it to go, that means that you've made the slip knot incorrectly. This happens by pulling the wrong thread to make the loop / slip knot. Watch the video very carefully and make sure that you're making the loop properly. Hope this helps.

I usually use 'six strand cotton embroidery thread'. Please see the comments, as there's more info and a link to a sample. Kind regards, Sanyamatma
