    @4:32 .... and should have added here that when completed it was the tallest building in the entire world. @9:48 You missed mentioning that Old Town Hall also has a climbing opportunity to view the top of the bell tower. @19:40 Yay! Estonian Museum of Architecture made your list. That was the first museum I visited in Tallinn.... during the last millennium! 😎 At that time they had a temporary exhibit of core drilled samples of Estonian natural marble. I wish we could visit that exhibit again! @22:24 Oh good! You did not forget the Estonian Open Air Museum... I was suspecting it would not be included at the point you said "two more neighborhoods...." I thought the "two" had already been utilized. @23:04 The staff member at the Chapel pointed out to us a "Emaspuu" across the path.... so we took a photo with it while she got a big hearty laugh! @23:18 Interesting! I did not recall traditional meals served there. Yum!

    Just saying: if you want the underground access in Kiek in de Kök you have to book in advance. They only do guided tours for safety reasons and there might only be a few every day. If you are here for one day only, book in advance if you want to go there. My personal opinion is that it is nothing special. Just a big and long cellar, not even mediaeval but from the Swedish period

  • @user-zy1vp2sw9c
    @user-zy1vp2sw9c Před 23 dny

    Actually, marzipan does cure heartache. It was a Persian doctor who first started to use it for sadness and sleeplessness. And today scientists have found out that a certain ingredient in nuts (which marzipan is made of) does help the body produce serotonin. And the Persians knew it way before us, they were amazing with their medicine and science as were the Turks during the Ottoman empire. So maybe cities like Tallinn brought some knowledge from those parts of the world. We were a busy port and a very international city. Even more so probably than today. I guess mediaeval people were not so stupid after all when it comes to medicine, we just do not know it yet

  • @user-zy1vp2sw9c
    @user-zy1vp2sw9c Před 23 dny

    You can get on the Town wall in three places. At Kiek in de Kök (you can also enter via Maiden tower), from Müürivahe street which is right behind the Viru gates (Hellemani and Munkadetaguse: the tower behind the monks) and quite on the other side of Old town, right at the railway station, at Väike Kloostri. Just come along Nunne street from railway station and turn left at the first street, there will be quite a huge gate there (which is a deceit really, it is not mediaeval, in mediaeval times there was no gate there. They destroyed that part of the wall in 18C for easy access to railway) Or you can walk down from Toompea hill through Patkuli stairs and you will find yourself at that gate. There you can get on the wall and three towers (Nunna, sauna and Golden Leg) These three places are all quite different, with different vibes and views. If you are interested ion Town walls and want good views, not typical cliche views from viewing platforms. Unfortunately, you cannot walk around the city, the wall has survived in pieces but you can trace the wall if you know what to look for. And there are separate towers where you can go in. Like Assauwe (the Estonian theatre and music museum) and Löwenshede (clay workshop but they will allow you to look around anyway). More access into towers during various festivals like Old town day in late May/early June (which would probably be the best time to visit Tallinn for a typical tourist for many reasons) Some towers are owned by theatres so you can go in when you go to a play. Oh, and Fat Margarete tower at the Seaside gate or whatever it is English. The Estonian maritime museum. Basically, if you are interested in Town Walls and towers, I recommend you do the homework so that you already know where you want to and CAN go because some of the access to the wall is not o easy to see if you are just walking around. And we have an event called "Ringing Town wall" at the first Saturday of September. There is a small concert in every tower of the wall and for free. And excursions as well but in Estonian. Then you can get into the towers that are usually closed. About half the towers that were there in mediaeval times have survived. And about half the city wall, so that you can see it. Most of the gates have been destroyed. The gates that you can see, are either pregates or post gates but not the main gates. Tallinn city wall used to be really powerful in mediaeval times and Tallinn was a city to be careful with. It was never conquered by storm so it served us well. That and also the fact that there were great strategies in place to store food and other vital things in case access was limited to the city to bring them in. Every citizen of Tallinn had to have a certain amount of grain in his house, for example. And own an armour. As to what kind of armour or how much grain, depended on the jewellary worn by the wife. If one was rich enough that his wige wore rare stones or gold, or wore expensive clothes, the person had more public duties and had to own more for public purpose. Also very specific laws were in place as to how to build houses so as to minimize the risk of fire. Unfortunately there still was at least one huge fire every decade, not to mention smaller ones. And for those interested in towers (and maybe not so eager to climb mediaeval stairs) I recommend St Nicholas church. They have a lift in the tower because the tower is fat enough it could accommodate a lift without destroying anything. The highest place for a view is St Olaf church at the Seaside gate but keep in mind that it is so high that you will fel very far away from everything you see, it will just be somewhere far away down there and very tiny. The best views are where you can be at the same level with something you want to look at. There are houses in Toompea where you will be almost a few meters from the upper part of St Nicholas church s if you were flying. But you can get into those houses only during events. And teh biggest likelihood of that is the Old Town Days. Ok, I got carried away. I love my town, I love it when people come here to experience it (not cheap beer or sth like that) and I like to help people have a good time here. I also work with tourists. My peronally favourite vies is from the Nun"s tower where you can literally almost touch the Toompea castle. It is not so easy to find for tourists because it is not in a touristy section of Old Town. But access it from the railway station, it is really easy. Just towers there that you can visit, nothing fancy. The towers like they were in 13th C. If you go through Kiek in de Kök or Maiden tower it will be Tallinn City museum with classic museum stuff and environment. And a little cafe on the wall. There are huge trees in front of it and there has been a debate, or rather a fight, going on for ten years, about the trees. There are those (mainly the people to gain financially from the view) who want them taken town. And those against it. Luckily the trees are still there. They block the view a tiny bit but we have a very strong tradition here not to touch living trees unless they were dangerous. I like that about my country, the sacredness of the trees. They do not really block the view so much and they have organically become a part of the view with their branches reaching the cafe on the wall and you can just see the birds doing their business and living their lives there. A very different angel to bird life than what you see from the ground. You are very welcome in Tallinn. But please keep in mind that this is quite a quiet culture. We do not speak so loud as if everyone was deaf and we do not scream for no reason. And we are quite touchy about that. Finland is the same. We expect people to get an idea of the general noise background and try to stick to it and not speak so that the entire world can hear. And please do not use phrases like "The Estonian SSR was established" or "Estonia JOINED the Soviet Union" or we had "a Soviet ERA". This is the one homework homework you should do if you do not want to offend the locals. It must be quite obvious why such words matter if you know anything at all about European history. Other than that this is a very tolerant and peaceful place where you are free to do and express anything

      Bad advice... Alternatively, people should not go to Helsinki, London or any city doing road works. The scale of road works and developments in Tallinn is nothing special. Main interest spots for tourists are still accessible and open. In fact, there are actually renewed areas waiting to be discovered like Vana-Kalamaja street, Pirita beach rest area etc.
