Lighting & Composition Breakdown of a music video I filmed - IMPORTANT LESSONS
I filmed a music video for my good friend Michael Brown - I am incredibly proud of how it all turned out but I think its important to look back at previous work and see what I could do differently, improve, or change.
I learned so much and I hope I can pass on some lessons to you!
Shout out to @michaelbrownvocalsofficial for being so talented and working with me to create this stunning music video.

In the film making industry we really are known by the content we make which doesn't always give us the space to try new things! By doing "Free work" we open ourselves up to new creative possibilities and flex those creative muscles! I give 3 reasons why I think you should create your own "work" and spend some time on projects you are passionate about.

Why I needed a break from Youtube...(even though I really didn't want to take one)
zhlédnutí 105Před rokem
Its been a little bit, I took a much needed break as honestly I was struggling with work life balance. My main job was rather intense during the month of April and I felt really close to burnout and therefore I needed a break... Thank you to all who have stuck with me on this journey!! Its definitely not over yet!!

Good video, well exposed. Just in case you or any of your viewers don't know if you right clic on the red keyframe icon you have a built in ease in ease out.
I LEARNED SOMETHING NEW
AMAZING!!
Thank you very much, it helped me a lot.
Glad I could help!!
thanks a lot, really good quality tutorial, just switched from after effects too. Davinci is definitely way better than premiere, but there's a biit of a learning cure to learn how to do the things I could do in after effects
You are so welcome! Yeah the switch is a little challenging at first but I think it’s pretty worth it!
Спасибо большое, это замечательный урок!
Большое спасибо
Great video mate!! is there a way to draw the diamond shape inside Davinci or i should use a separate software for it?
Thank you so much!! I built that in illustrator - there are shape building stuff in fusion but I find it easier to do in another program!
Does anybody know why this diamond symbol doesn't exists for effect keyframes? I want to move them to the left for example.
Great question!! For some reason DaVinci has that limitation from my experience, if you want to key frame effects(some not all) it’s usually done in Fusion rather than the edit page.
Whenever i move the dot on the smooth out right option it just moves the whole image instead of doing what yours did?
Hmm hard to know exactly whats going wrong... but my guess is that you need to hit the smaller circle attached to the little arm, not the primary one. The primary one will move everything - while the little circle attached to the arm should help you smooth out your animations. Please let me know if that works - or send me a screen shot of the problem!
@@Josh_Johnston i am just moving the circle- no matter how much i move it it just either makes the image go further and come back or make it go back and come further, at different speeds. idk how to fix it
@@Skilled_Night_Guard Hmmm sorry to hear that, can you take a screen recording and send it to my email? Maybe I can help more that way: JoshuaJohnston070@gmail.com
Ty that was very clear
You are so welcome! I’m glad to hear that!! :)

That b-roll looking spiiiicyyy. Some solid lessons in there, nice vid!
Hey couldn’t have any of it without your help!!
Love this
I'm thrilled to hear that! Thank you!!
the spline editor opens but there is no line, only the buttons
Hey great question! This could be for a few reasons. When you open the spline editor there is an arrow pointing down in the top right corner. It could be that non of the adjustments are turned on for you, simply checking the different boxes should show you lines appearing in the editor. I typically run into this when I have not added my keyframes yet. Hope that helps! Let me know if it doesn't and I will see what else I can find out for you!
Great video! Is there a way to change the velocity between two keyframes? It seems that whenever I'm trying to ease out and in to two different positions it actually changes the move of the subject itself and doesn't adjust the speed. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you so much!! From my understanding by editing the keyframes in the edit page the way I showed there is not a way to edit velocity. If you were to animate within fusion you get those more nuanced controls. It’s a bit intimidating at first but depending on what you are trying to do it can be pretty easy to do some simple stuff in it. You will most likely need to add a transform node and animate in there.
💪🔥❤️
I'd be down to go to a museum with you any time. Great vid!! Looking forward to more!
You are a real MVP! Thanks man - always awesome having you on locations!

Great points! Applicable to other creative disciplines as well
Thank you!! Yeah I appreciate that!!
My son just started on a youth Football team, and me being the one with an FX30 and all the gear, it became time for me to actually make a use of it! At the moment, the footage is used for coach film to help us work out what's going well, what isn't, what to work on with the boys and what to try to train out of their game, and what has really helped me go through 2 hours of film to turn into 15 minutes of plays is the Speed Editor and the Cut page. I just load up the footage, set in-out points and then insert. Along with that first pass of organizing the footage, making timelines with each section of the story is a great way of churning through hours of footage. I think that the new transcription feature is going to help immensely too, especially if I want to do something like record road trips or if I'm making something scripted, be able to notate my take. It's also inspired me to make a bigger go of actually making videos for myself on a more specific channel, and I posted my first one today. It's just a first impressions video of a software update, so it's not really structured or well done, but I see where I can improve on getting my reviews, stories and tutorials better made, both before picking up my camera and sitting in front of my computer. The other thing I'm doing right now is setting up a kanban board with my video ideas and putting them into sections to be able to prioritize and actually work on them.
WOW!! Thats amazing and some great experiences to use. The FX30 is a phenomenal camera. I am thrilled to hear you are trying to branch out on your own using some of those techniques! I really like the kanban board idea with all of your video ideas - simple and very effective! I hope you enjoy working on your own creative works! One video at a time!!
Literally obsessed with this video
I mean that is really great to hear haha :))))
Relax
That is what I was hoping for!
Very inspiring!
Thank you so much!!
Great videography - well done!
Thank you so much!!!
Great footage! Nice work!! Congrats!
Thank you so much!! It’s been a pretty massive project!
Been using Resolve for 4 years now and I am an admitted Premiere hater now but I never stop missing having a keyframe panel the way Premiere does. Having to do all of this work in the timeline itself is clunky and awkward compared to Premiere.
Yeah I get where you are coming from - took a while to adjust to it and there are certainly some features that I wish Resolve would update! I’ve grown to like it in the timeline actually but yeah there are some “unique” ways of working in there that I find frustrating sometimes
Same with the Speed Ramp, also awkward with DaVinci

Thanks for sharing this video! Great to see you back! The key of success in our short life is to have balance and pull the break when we feel mentally tired! You did really well! Awaiting for your next videos!
Really grateful for your wisdom here! Thank you!! Have some fun ideas I hope end up working out!
