Seabourn Odyssey Embarkation Day | Alaska Cruising | Ultra Luxury Line | Solo Travel
Hello Travelers,
I boarded the Seabourn Odyssey on September 29, 2023 for my last cruise of the year. I had never sailed with Seabourn, and they are known as an ultra luxury line. I was very curious to see the differences in how they do things versus the main stream and even premium lines do.
This was a wonderful ship and a really fun voyage. I started my day in the Pan Pacific hotel, which sits atop the cruise port at Canada Place. It’s a great hotel, and they have a nice service where you can have them take your bags from your room and deliver them straight to your ship.
I went to embarkation, and it was a folding table with two people sitting at it to check in passengers. They gave me an afternoon boarding window, and there wasn’t a line or anything when I arrived. Check in was just them finding my name on their list and letting me go on board.
I managed to loose an item between my hotel room and the ship, and I actually got back off the ship to go look for it. Sadly, it was gone for good. But this was the first time I had ever boarded a ship on embarkation day and then got off the ship to go do something.
They had our room keys for us and they provided these nice little cases for them rather than a lanyard or something. Much like you’d hold some business cards in, so it was useful after the fact as well.
They had a hosted solo cruisers meetup in one of the bars before dinner, and a hosted table in the Restaurant. It was pleasant to meet some of the other passengers who were traveling by themselves, and the hosts always kept the conversation going.

Hello Travelers, In September 2023, I boarded the Seabourn Odyssey for an Alaska sailing. This was my PreCruise hotel. I’ve always wanted to try this hotel. It is literally perched on top of the cruise port. You just cannot get any closer to the port than this. It is also a lovely hotel, and I’ve included some footage of the lobby areas. I booked a king room, but when I arrived, they said they ...

    I hope you doing ok. I just returned from a Canada Cruise and tested positive at home. The day before I experienced a runny nose and attributed my symptoms to my allergies. My husband tested negative as well as my two boys so I was happy about that. I think I got it from the shuttle boats, they were so packed with many people coughing. In the future I will wait for the bigger shuttles, since they have better ventilation. I’m glad I took my temperature as soon as I got home. After noticing a 101 fever I tested myself for COVID immediately and it was positive. My symptoms have been super mild and just head congestion. The fever was just one day. Medication prescribed by my doctor was $389, that’s with insurance and a coupon. I didn’t get the medicine. Waiting for 2 more days to retest.

    I’m sorry you’re not aware that COVID is not a virus, but snake venom, therefore you can’t “catch” venom. There is no need to wear a mask, distancing, or isolation. Also, some of the tests are laced with COVID. You can research this by watching Dr Brian Ardis on you tube.

    I came down with Covid a day after disembarking a Norwegian Fjords cruise last September. We’re on a cruise to Alaska in just over a week and I am coming prepared this time. My GP in the UK gave me a private prescription for Paxlovid and antibiotics in case of infection. Cost £11 for Paxlovid and £12 for the antibiotics. I took Paxlovid last year which made Covid go away for a week but I then had rebound for another 10 days after that and got a chest infection. But I got better and have always been fully vaccinated. This time I’m a bit more anxious as I am on immunosuppressants but have had good advice from Dr about how to deal with it if I get Covid. I have travel insurance but there have been recent cases in the press where travel insurance companies refuse to pay out for Covid where there are underlying medical conditions. So I am coming prepared. If anything it will save me hundreds of dollars in visiting the ship medical centre. Wishing you better.

    That is unfortunate you contracted Covid. I an a retired R.N. and due to a blood clotting issue that resulted in 95% vision loss in my left eye along with having a severe adverse reaction to the H1N1 flu 💉 in 2009, all my doctors advised me not to take the 💉. At the onset and into the height of the pandemic before the 1st 💉s were available I worked the healthcare frontline triaging ambulatory virus symotomatic patients that presented to the hospital I was working at. During this time as well as after I did not contract the virus where many of my colleagues pre and post vaccination did. I suspect the reason for this is a number of years ago I was diagnosed with a severe Vitamin D deficiency, and since that time I have had to take daily Vitamin D supplements because I just can't maintain a normal range Vitamin D level without them. Vitamin D is very important in maintaining a healthy immune system needed to fight off viruses and other infectious organisms. Vitamin D deficiencies are near epidemic populations that live in long grey winter climates due to getting insufficient direct sunlight skin exposure which the sun is where we get the lions share of our Vitamin D. Getting vaccinated for any infectious disease provides some but not 100% immunity, and other interventions such as maintaining a normal Vitamin D level, preventing dehydration, getting sufficient sleep, and limiting sugar and alcohol intake does much to enhance one's immunity as well as incorporating good infection control hygiene measures. If you have not or never had your Vitamin D level checked do consider asking your physician to order a Vitamin D level lab test on you. If you are found to be deficient this is very easy to correct under the supervision of your physician. I wish you a speedy recovery.

This year my husband and I sailed on Cunard. Only thing I brought back was a tan and some booze.

    I’d say at least 50% of the people on our cruise in 2021 had covid but everyone didn’t slow down. We all got sick, my daughter particularly, and had to drive back to California because she couldn’t fly. It was a dumb idea for us to go on a cruise then and we regretted it A LOT but things have been fine cruise wise since then. I hope you feel much, much better.

      Yeah, it was definitely going around on this voyage. I heard others talking about members of their parties also getting it. The other thing that struck me is the they were not wanting to test the other people in the cabin of someone who had tested positive unless they were showing symptoms. So those other people were free to move around the ship without masks. How is that not spreading the virus?

      I'm going to call BS on this, did the CDC get involved with a 50% sickness rate? I don't think so

  • @maobfh
    @maobfh Před 7 dny

    Yeah, that would be a standard exam as the nurse had gone through the symptoms, side effects and your vitals. 10-15 minutes is fairly standard. I am SORRY you got this on vacation and on a cruise ship. It could end up that your entire cruise is spent in isolation and DO file THAT claim with your travel insurance. Paying over $1000 for the exam and medication is appallingly irresponsible of the cruise line! They CERTAINLY should (typically) pay to cover any COVID case onboard BUT padding the bill that much ( ~$150 normally using the US’s exorbitant medical costs is a significant markup. I will admit that I do not know what compensation is offered a doctor and nurse on a cruise ship. A cost like that for one person, payable before you leave the ship, almost guarantees that many (most? Half?) of the passengers will avoid going to the Medical Clinic to avoid this cost. Even if they try to be responsible, they will need food and drink and others will be exposed. I don’t know that you caught it on the ship as the incubation is over 10 days (12-14?) but if they want compliance and control of COVID then they need to keep the costs at a minimum. Imagine how it would be for a couple with children on board? Devastating.

    • @SoloSueTravels
      @SoloSueTravels Před 7 dny

      I got lucky. The Paxlovid worked well, and I was released from isolation after only one day. I just had to wear a mask, which was fine. I will say with those prices, people getting Covid on a ship is basically a profit center for the cruise line. My nephew also tested positive, but when my brother told me, I let him know that the anti viral isn’t available for children, so there was no point in having him go to medical. They just kept him in the cabin, and told the cruise line so they would have food delivered.

    My wife and I tested positive in June while we were on board in Sun Princess. We went thru exactly the same process you have reported. Please continue to report the insurance claim process to let Princess travelers to be aware of the travel insurance how they process it. For those have FEP BCBS, we have 100% coverage, I received a check within 7 days upon filing my claim on line (call 800# to get a form). Don't buy travel insurance on your next cruise.

      I have an annual policy through a third party insurance company because I travel so much. So I can’t really report on the Princess insurance experience. Maybe others here can offer some insight?

    Aw shucks! I am sorry that happened to you. On each Princess cruise I have taken, I bought the princess protection plan. I will now check to see if it covers med center visits and prescriptions! I can think of better ways to spend $900

    • @SoloSueTravels
      @SoloSueTravels Před 7 dny

      I know, I was shocked at the prices! I use a third party insurance company, but it is always a good idea to verify what the coverage is before buying any policy. My Dad and several others in our group also caught it, so the medical center was making a good profit that voyage.

      @SoloSueTravels yes, I agree, none of my business. I realize that a mask is a personal choice and sometimes even a fashion statement. I SMH, though, because masks were nonexistent before the pandemic and were, apparently, not needed. They've been proven to be useless, but some still inconvenience themselves in a way that they never would have five years ago. Anyway, it's their right. Do try to stay at the Queen Mary. It's a real treat. I've stayed several times before a Carnival cruise and find it fascinating every time just imagining a crossing in such grand style.

    Did you find purchasing the meal plan was worth it? We are doing an Alaskan land tour in August and the meal plan from Princess seems very pricey to me.

    • @SoloSueTravels
      @SoloSueTravels Před měsícem

      Since it was my first experience with the cruise tour, I was good with buying the meal package. It made it simpler. But now that I have done it, I would probably not. There is more flexibility to try different options when you are doing it on your own.
