    Now, integrate mirrors into this idea! You could get rid of much of that mid day dip if the mirrors moved to follow the sun- at least that's what I think would happen. Wouldn't double sided panels cost about twice as much though? Since it has twice as many solar cells I figure you should be comparing 2 regular panels to 1 of these vertical panels. I can see how these are beneficial if you don't have the space but I kinda feel like the graphs are a bit deceiving- compare the amount of cells and their output for a real 1:1 performance test

    So has there been any testing for motorised panels that track the sun to maintain maximum output throughout the day? In the game space engineers it is a common method people build. It would basically be panels set up like your south facing but on a mount that rotate the array from east to west as the day goes by.

  • @SlavTiger

    What about a 15° tilt bifacial instead of true vertical? Steeper incline, less snow stickage, but a bit more of the noon sun like the normal 30° panels, and a thinner horizontal profile than 30°, allowing more space at a slight sacrifice over true vertical?

    As someone mention Mylar for a reflective surface would be interesting, but with the added maintenance of keeping it clean it adds a lot of work and a greater leap in cost than something like white landscaping rock. I would be interested in the performance of something more feasible like white gravel. If you have time to test it I’d love to see the results.

    This panel design would be incredible in the northern latitudes in winter where the sun is always fairly close to the horizon. You’d definitely want to flip these up in a more traditional orientation during the summer though since the sun tends to track very high.

    12v batteries can be bought in 5kwh. & their price is on par with 48v 5kwh..

  • @aullvrch
    @aullvrch Před 2 dny

    If you’re running mostly 12v appliances then why choose 48v and loss efficiency on your buck converter? The real killer for 12v is the solar chargers on the market for 12v (say victrons’ smart solar chargers) are around $600 per 1kw of solar input, whereas 48v is 4kw per $600.. If you’re never going to expand your solar array then it would be fine.

    • @ProjectsWithDave
      @ProjectsWithDave Před 2 dny

      If everything you are powering is 12V it makes sense to run a 12V system. Otherwise, as you said, you can get more power for the same money on the charger and inverter side.

    @davidg2861 Před 3 dny

    Very nicely presented and interesting results. One question that intrigues me is whether installation of bifacial panels on a pitched roof (say 30 or 40 degrees) with a north-south ridge could work well. Such a roof is really inefficient for single faced panels with normal mounting, but maybe wind loads get too stupid for vertical panels.

  • @dbf1dware

    Superb work as always, Dave. I've had a Chevy Volt (2 different model years) since 2014. My current is a 2017. It is a plug-in-hybrid, so a bit different on all these calculations. I like the whole idea of a plug-in-hybrid simply because I can use gas any time I actually need to. However, with my typical commute, I fill up my gas tank roughly once every 9-10 months (just over 8 gallons at Seattle's ridiculous $4.95/gal). According to my Volt, about 92-93% of my miles have been electric alone. I have about 82,000 miles on my current Volt. I've had to replace my tires due to wear only once so far. Two oil changes so far. That's it. Things I like very much about my Volt are how smooth the power/acceleration is and how quiet it is. I absolutely love it and will probably drive it into the ground (I'm hoping for, oh, 150k miles). Keep up the great work.

    • @ProjectsWithDave
      @ProjectsWithDave Před 4 dny

    Doesn't faster charge destroy the battery's cells?

    • @netsai61
      @netsai61 Před 4 dny

      Lithium batteries tend to charge fast , lower and discharge at a higher rate than lead acid without any damage. Lithium batteries are also lighter than lead acid . Lead acid tend to withstand high or low temperature than lithium hence being used as starter batteries in automobiles .

    • @ProjectsWithDave
