Love this interview. Frank is such a huge talent . Taking the mundane and often overlooked and turning it into art and conversation pieces.. 👏👏
Amazing insights into an Artists work and a photographers lens. I’ve know Frank since NYC - he spent time with me in to his dark room to teach me how to develop my film and share his love of the process - images which I still have. This guy is so humble about his art, work and skill. This is one of the best podcasts I’ve listened to. He is One of The Greats.
This conversation offers a fantastic opportunity to sink into some of Frank Marshal’s distinctive work. I am ever grateful to Frank for the gillions of hours he clearly puts into traversing America’s throw away landscapes. His doors and roads to nowhere invite stories on top of stories. They entreat us to stay and pay attention. Uncluttered and elegant views of what would otherwise be lost give us quiet places to see beauty, injustice, absurdity, community, tenderness. Love of country. No one digs that deeply into difficult subjects without love. Its deep hum pierces the noise of an increasingly chaotic world. Bravo for sharing this wonderful work and thank you for spreading the word! (Word- not gospel! :)
Loved this….Frank is a huge talent and I’ve been following him for years!
Really insightful discussion. As a photographer, I found this discussion helpful.
You should explore more. I've encountered some incredible things, and the insights are true gold. There are many more I think you'll enjoy coming up.
I'm glad the youtube algorithm is a little off the scales, or else this little gem wouldn't have come my way. Albeit: making Appalachia a subject for photography is a little cliche, Stacy Kranitz' take is candid and novel -- on so many things -- and sooooo refreshing for this reason. (I work in news, and/or know several self-supposed 'photographers', and practically none of these 'journalists' or artists have any insight besides treating their craft as simply some kind of button-pressing occupation.) And even with my criticism about her subject, her pictures are still good, and actually show there's more going on than drugs, sex, and deep poverty.
This is such a great comment! Thank you for sharing your thoughts. Stacy was a fascinating guest and her approach is (to me) inspiring. We have a lot more coming up. Stay tuned.
Stacy is such an inspiring photographer, and teller. Amazing podcast
A very relevant issue. Waterville facing same situation of many places. Great work Gary
Amazing!
Such an inspiring journey that of Sam Harris!
I’ve become a regular listener. These conversations go so deep in an effortless way. They remind me of the community of strangers, all similar and unique, that makes the art we call photography.
This is a nice comment, @philipheying4902. Thank you for listening. It’s great fun meeting so many interesting people and seeing their work.
Ci Demi is my favorite Turkish photographer. Simply love his works!
Which album cover?
Such an interesting and enlightening conversation with Jim Herrington. This is one of the many great stories he shared on this one.
Such a rich conversation!
So you stalked a train stalker? Weird flex.
Craig drove in front of the train…
cool
Okay?
Whats the point of this short? I have no idea what you do or what "subject" means in this context
This video got randomly recommended to me as well. I did a little digging and I found out that The Urbanaut Podcast covers "image culture" (I assume it's because of how our world is filled with pictures now that cameras are so accessible), the narratives that photography covers, and how it affects individuals and modern society. It's a project under the Urbanautica Journal of Visual Anthropology and Cultural Landscapes. The man being interviewed, Terry A. Ratzlaff, is artist/photographer who specializes in dealing with the subjects of "trains and time." In the video, he's talking about his work "The Watcher" and the "subject" he's referring to is the subject of his art/photography work, which is the old man watching trains. Hope that helps! And do forgive me for yapping.
I make little shorts about the conversations I have with artists and photographers around the world. They are meant to be little teasers for the full episode. @geebeedee9509, thank you for the added context. Terry is one of the more fascinating people I have met on this journey.
Thank you Terry for sharing the backstage of your thinking and works with us. Much inspiring.
Good
He is an intuitive. What a treasure... and he is a teacher..amazing
I steel don’t understand what are the reasons or which one is the reason for which he stopped photographing people.
When we had the conversation, he had mentioned that he stopped doing portraits. The reason he states is because he gets too connected. His empathy and connection with the people he is working with makes it tough for him. His worked evolved in a different direction. The two stories he shares are examples of that empathy on display.
@@TheUrbanautPodcast I would have to rewatch the video again. Somehow he got me lost on the stories and I couldn’t see the connections. Maybe because I am a linear thinker. If I don’t see clearly stated that A is because of B , stories doesn’t do much for me. On the other hand, I don’t see how much connection can there be with someone that calls you to take a portraits of themselves for self promotion or a family portrait for memories. His “portraits” must be referring to something else that calls for possible empathy and connection. Thank you for helping me understand.
I follow the misunderstanding… these portrait series are not “for hire”. These are self initiated by the photographer for artistic purposes. Stories, topics, and interest that he is interested in. I love this kind of portraiture… it has a different feel than what you usually get in this genre. IMO, it requires a deep connection and a lot of time spent in order to do it properly. That can be a heavy price to pay, if someone is empathetic-as Pietro seems to be.
Not an easy topic yet Patricia Rodas introduces it with personal care and consistent artwork.
Great show
Great talk and works!
I’m about 45min south of Cal City. There is a great off road community out there with a lot of BLM land to ride. I know a handful of very nice people that live in Cal City.
Nori has images, on his website, of the off roading as well. It’s an interesting story of how it came to be or “not be”.
Fascinating!
Completely agree
Love your work Tim but I'm not fully satisfied with it.
Chris Killip is a superhero. It must have been an extraordinary experience to work with him. I enjoyed getting acquainted with this thoughtful photographer and his thought provoking images.
This kind of reminds me of what we have in Montreal, cubes stacked up to create living spaces, presented during the 1967 world exposition.
This story was absolutely fascinating.
Hi
Thank you Noritaka for sharing about yourself, practice and works. I really enjoy your interest in masterplans, cities and transformations.
So interesting, that's where photography and architecture converge 👏🏻👏🏻
This deserves my like 👍
Thank you Marinos for sharing your thoughtful experience and your personal life. You're a great photographer. I enjoyed listening to your unfolded stories!
Love this conversation. This is what makes the photo journey inspiring and shows opportunities to work with "local or territorial objects" surrounding us.
Always new ways to look at images and life. Interesting Thank you❤
Patrick great interview! Sasha , it was a real pleasure listening to you speak about photography and your work. All the very best.
Sasha is amazing!
Keep Italy for the Italians 🇮🇹
Absolutely stunning. Unique and evocative.
Vermont is like a ghost state
Its not multicultural. These people are not even Italian. They are immigrants.
In breve, gli italiani devono rassegnarsi al loro declino demografico e cedere il Paese a stranieri del terzo mondo, sorridendo e cantando contenti. La guerra ideologica è davvero un'arma portentosa...
