    My dad used to smoke Camels, I on the other hand, haven't even tried smoking. I need someone more pessimistic than myself to balance my doom and gloom, and keep it in check... which you do admirably. It always seems darkest before the dawn, or during a power outage. You only find out later which one it was.

    It's like a rerun of the great Close-Permian Dying 252 million years ago, only much worse. The flood basalts that were ultimately responsible for extinguishing 90% of extant life at the end of the Paleozoic happened over the course of 2 million years. Our anthropogenic release of greenhouse gases has taken only about 150 years to rival that of the end-Permian flood basalts. The 10% of life that was able to come through that earlier extinction did so because, in their cases, the ability to adapt outstripped the tempo of change. All it takes to realize that the current catastrophe is likely to put the quietus on *all* multicellular life, is to compare those long-ago 2 million years to the century and a half that it's taken us to do the equivalent. Nothing will be able to outrun it. "The glory and shame of the universe," Pascal called us. I live for these weekly bad-news summaries. Thank you for doing this.

    To answer your question , knowing the tobaggan speeds up it seems each month, sometime week, i have employed some strategies. I enjoy fish before it's gone, same with organic berries, and my favorite foods. Paying a bit more, yeah, why save for the end of the ride? I hug people harder, love deeper, try to spend my time in deeper conversations instead of idle chatter. I try to laugh more and savor life every moment. Thank you as always for being a highlight in my family's week! ❤

      @@MoreBadNews that's what i'm trying to figure out. i'll try to find your email and send you the first two-three pages. i think it'll be my best work.

    • @gstrummer
      @gstrummer Před 25 dny

      @@MoreBadNews i'm wracking my brains to figure out a title. not sure. here's from page 1: We are teaching in the middle of a shitstorm. Society is changing too fast for anyone to comprehend, but we can’t talk about it in our classrooms for fear of societal backlash. We see our democracy failing to respond to the numerous crises we face, and the shitstorm gusts when teachers fear informing students of how bad our new normal is. It’s palpable when students hesitate to ask questions for fear of making a mistake, or when they suffer depression and anxiety from what streams on their phones. Failing in front of friends in a classroom is hard, but it’s impossible in a world that has lost its civility. Yet learning requires making mistakes, and that’s true for all of us. So I am writing to say this: We need to call it like it is: We are teaching in a shitstorm and trying to do the impossible. You are not crazy for sensing it. But by having a conversation about it, we can hope to start to make our mind-bending new normal manageable. But understand I’m a lone voice. We are isolated from each other because of systemic forces no one can fix at scale. We’re alone in the classroom and thereby alone in our thoughts. Additionally, most educational institutions sidestep the question, “How do we teach in a shitstorm?” I believe the first step to learning anything new is to talk about what we’re seeing. That’s what I do in the first part of this book. In the second part, I outline strategies that have helped me get through it. In the third part, I interview colleagues who explain what the shitstorm means to them and how they get through it. (Some of my interviewees disagree with my assessment of the shituation. Awesome. Those disagreements need to be expressed, because my goal here is not to answer the question as much as to start a conversation within our profession. It’s the only way forward.) Let’s start that conversation.

    For a brief time back in the 90s, I delivered my lectures Jimmy-Swaggart style. According to some of my students, it was a riveting performance. Others found it a little too edgy for their taste. Eventually, my native inclination to decorum won out and I became boring again.

    I understand that there's an ineffable aspect to this conflict that can be universalized and applied to all conflicts. The problem is that that aspect of the conflict is ineffable and useless. But have you maybe considered that your particular perspective as a Jew who wants to see Israel thrive might be diametrically opposed to the will of Palestinians? In other words, why don't you act like all the others who support Israel and talk about how the Palestinians are not worthy of self-determination? Why do you insist on talking about how tragic the situation is for Palestinians in preface to explaining how outraged you are about the fact that students are protesting their universities for their investments in Israeli companies? Just be a real man and warp the truth in your favor. There are times where you must not ask any deep questions that challenge your leaders. This is one of them. Stop pretending as though you are above this conflict and act in a way that shows you have loyalty to your own kin.

    • @MoreBadNews

      Eric, you have created your own straw man. This isn’t me you’re describing. I believe the human species is facing imminent extinction. No one wins. I don’t believe Israel will thrive. I don’t think Israel will survive. No one comes out of this alive.
