Guide to the Abyss | D&D Planescape
The most comprehensive video on the Abyss in existence.
In the Planescape campaign setting for D&D, there are 17 outer planes, which are essentially the realms of D&D’s afterlife. There’s one plane for each moral alignment, ranging from chaotic good to lawful evil to true neutral. I’ve already covered the planes of lawful evil and lawful good in depth. In this video I’ll be telling you everything you need to know about the plane of chaotic evil: the Abyss.

    Thank you for the video, because this is a very good resource for the sects. I've never even heard of the sects' existence before! I don't think that there's anywhere else on the internet that does as good of a job describing them as you did. This is going to a very useful resource if I ever create a Planescape campaign. That being said, there were a few things that irked me about the video on a personal level. I'll keep most of them to myself, mostly because I don't see myself being able to change your mind about the other stuff, but the one issue that I will comment on is about your misnaming of poachers, describing them as people who pay lots of money to hunt exotic animals. That's just incorrectness that I can't stand, blatant misinformation that needs to be corrected. Simply put, if those people were paying money to get in, they wouldn't poachers. The people who pay to hunt animals are called Recreational hunters (At least according to google). I can understand if you don't like them personally, I'm going to judge you on that, but they are not poachers. Instead, they are just as you said: People who pay stupid amounts of money to ahead and hunt animals, either for a physical trophy like a head or taxidermy, or for a photo, which can be posted on the internet sometimes. Not only that, but they aren't necessarily evil. For one, people who have to go through special programs to pay this money usually pay them to governments, who in turn might use them to help its people or pay for conservation efforts. (Governments can be corrupt, but lets assume the best here) Hunters can also help the environment directly. A perfect example of this are the people who hunt the invasive python species plaguing the Everglades. Maybe not the stereotypical image of a recreational hunter, and they may not be officially be recreational hunters (idk if they have to register or not), but those people in the Everglades are doing good, there's no denying that. Poachers on the other hand are 100% evil. Poachers are hunters who illegally bypass government restrictions, often by going into protected reserves, and hunt animals that way. I could see some poachers just wanting to hunt without paying the fees or being bogged down by regulations, but those aren't the majority of them. The majority of poachers, and the ones that make the most trouble, are killing these animals, often on some part of the endangered spectrum, for a resource on them. The most famous of these are the ivory tusks on elephants, and just the tusks, leaving the rest of the animal to rot, while selling the tusks on black markets where shamans can buy them to fuel their pseudoscience. They are evil because they are illegally entering protected land, hunting endangered creatures, often just harvesting a small part of animal and leaving the rest to waste, and often are working directly under criminal elements. That's why they are evil. To be clear, I am not a hunter of any kind myself, nor do I know anybody personally who is. I just wanted to clear up misinformation. If you still think that Recreational hunters are evil, I'm not going to correct you. However, I just wanted to make it clear that they are NOT Poachers, who are definitely evil! To be fair, the Vile Hunt does line up more with Poachers then Recreational Hunters, as they are going against the nature of the plane, so at least there's that. Anyways, again, thank you for the awesome video, even if it had some parts that I had issues with.

    In ADnD all Demon Lords/Princes and Arch Devils were lesser gods. I am sure they changed this so that they can be killed by a party. Having a party going around killing gods is a bit much (though we all know that campaign where it happens). In fact in the Bloodstone set of module Orcus is given the power of a greater god because he possesses his "soul artifact" or some such thing. So at one time they were all gods. If I were still running a campaign they would remain gods and be near impossible to slay. Just seems silly to have characters going and killing these beings, to me anyway.

      @WadeAllen001 Před 4 dny

      They aren't. Though I would say there's a difference between those non-essentials and eating animals (or animal products) in that eating animals inescapably involves causing needless harm (unless of course it's lab-grown animal products, which I am in favor of). I'm sure electricity and the internet result in harm, but not necessarily so. Which means that we can conceivably reach a point where we could have electricity and the internet without causing harm to others. I would also be willing to bet that the harm caused per individual to generate electricity and maintain the internet is less than the harm caused per individual from eating animals, but I don't know for sure. Another difference is that the "ask" of cutting out animal products from your diet is much more mild and easy to manage than cutting out electricity, and thus harder to justify not doing.

    32:28 I mean, I think this could be easily be explained with the Warhammer 40K strategy, where the additions are different in inconsistent because you're seeing it from the perspective of a scholar trying to understand and categorize these things they are trying to study. So it makes sense that these different editions would be different and also simultaneously true, because as time progresses you have Scholars changing their understandings, re-categorizing and re-re-categorizing everything that they know. You see this in real life, just look at Medical knowledge, the way documented and now continue to document history, with new knowledge, along with greater understandings and sensitivities with language is changing to better describe the phenomenon that we study. I mean just look at the DSM V and its predecessors.

    The problem with your take is that you fail to understand what meritocracy even is. It means judging people by the outcome, not how they achieved that outcome. The moment you put effort in the definition is the moment you misunderstand the whole concept. Effort does NOT matter in meritocracy, only the results. Yes, the idea that you can accomplish anything if you work hard enough is a lie, but it's a lie that has nothing to do with meritocracy. So you're wrong right on the start.

    • @WadeAllen001
      @WadeAllen001 Před 15 dny

      I accounted for that in the video by saying that if your definition of meritocracy only accounts for ability and not effort or luck, then you can have such a system, but it's not what we currently have. The reason I focused so much on effort in this video is because I was addressing the notion of meritocracy that many people hold (the belief that effort is rewarded, or the belief that skill is rewarded and that skill is largely a result of effort), not the notion that you specifically hold, or the technical definition. After all, why target a technical definition that isn't widely used? Interestingly, looking up the definition of meritocracy right now provides a different result than it did when I made this video (as you can see in the screenshot of the definition I included in the video). Obviously definitions do change over time, but I don't think there's any question that effort has commonly been a part of the definition of meritocracy, and is present in many people's minds when they think about it.

    heresy is not the same as apostasy. To be a heretic, you must be a christian which dogma's deviated from the Church's. So, non-believers can't be Heretics per say, because to be a heretic, you must first be part of the church. If that makes any sense.

    What system would take its place? meritocracy while unfair in a lot of ways creates more stablity then say letting incompetant people take hold on industry to try and make up for said unfairness that meritocracy creates for example you care about meritocracy when you need surgery from a doctor, you care about meritocracy when it comes to a mechanic fixing the plane thats going to take you home.

      I did say that in the end of the video, that we should still care that the people doing important jobs are qualified for their jobs. The video was about how 1) a pure meritocracy is not even achievable because people will always be rewarded for things they didn't earn, but it was also about how 2) we don't even have a meritocracy in the first place. So I actually think a better system could be one that's even closer to being meritocratic, so for instance if we could eliminate nepotism in hiring. But I also think a better system could be one that incorporates non-meritocratic practices, such as UBI. You can have a society that uplifts the lower classes while still maintaining high standards and high pay for complex and important jobs such as doctors and pilots (because for example if every adult gets a $1,000 a month stipend people would still be incentivized to work to make more money to afford luxuries and gain status, and high-paying jobs would still be appealing).

      I try to avoid using AI art in my videos, though I'm sure some sneak in that I don't notice. When making these videos I search through a ton of google image results, which includes looking at thousands of AI generated images, which actually becomes extremely unpleasant and disturbing, like a bad acid trip. That being said, I have tried generating a few AI images for things that I couldn't find a good image for. I never end up using them though because they have that typical AI art look.

    32:24 ...THANK YOU! I can't stand when people talk about DnD and get into arguments about what's canon and whats not when the idea of homebrew exists and is extremely encouraged and even required in some cases. Honestly I always tell people to pick and choose what is and what isn't canon in relation to whatever game or campaign you're running or talking about. Thats not only to narrow down talking points but also to get rid of the die hard lore masters that can't understand the concept of "everything true but not everything is canon" and vice versa.

    I would make the argument that meritocracy is not suppose to be a fair thing, but a functional thing. Because the opposite of meritocracy is hiring people who are incompetent. Whatever takes people are making, the wind of change will blow you around and you must decide whether you are going to own your life or not.

    • @WadeAllen001
      @WadeAllen001 Před 25 dny

      It's mostly just a book of variant rules, items, spells, feats, and character options. The only parts that would contribute would be the parts on demons and demon lords, but that's only a few pages and also appears in other books (the Book of Vile Darkness only details 5 demon lords while the Fiendish Codex 1 details 14 of them).

    I think a "demon lord" is any demon who has EVER conquered a layer. As in, if you ever conquer a layer, you get the title of demon lord, and you keep it even if you later lose the layer.

    • @WadeAllen001
      @WadeAllen001 Před 26 dny

      That's a good take, though there are still demon lords (particularly of Pazunia) who it seems like have never conquered a layer, but are just contenders.
