Quick query I have a relative on carers allowance and income support and just recieved migration letter for income support, to move to universal credit and make claim by mid September 2024, my question is should I hold off making the claim to nearer September as I read that as soon as I make the claim my payments would stop after 2 weeks so as my income support runs till September. I could potentially have no payments between now and probably October if I claim early on to move over, l Hope query make sense to you and hope you can advise me

My local Council Kirklees (AKA Huddersfield town and District), has been treating Council Tax discount as if it were a ‘legacy benefit’ for the purpose of reducing what they have to pay out if someone is kicked off their discount by losing eg PIP status temporarily. Many PIP claimants come back on of course at Appeal in the Tribunals system, or with the appeal looming, the DWP have a change of heart haha. It works like this…you have PIP and so get an enhanced C Tax discount/Benefit. You lose PIP following a review, and in desperation, are not only left with only UC to apply for, but you will be advised to do so by anyone you ask, eg MP, Citizens Advice, the Council themselves, etc. You get a lousy small amount of UC for a bit, then your Appeal finds in your favour/DWP reverse their decision. Next, you’ll go back and ask the Council to reinstate your previous level of discount/benefit for Council Tax…and find councils like Kirklees not interested, and refuse to do so! Kirklees stated when finally pushed, the reason was that once you claim UC, you can’t go back to the previous level of Council Tax discount/benefit. FROM THE UNIVERSAL CREDIT PEOPLE THEMSELVES THIS IS NOT TRUE - UNIVERSAL CREDIT ONLY IS A ONE-WAY STREET IF THERE’S A BENEFIT IT FULLY REPLACES AND THAT BENEFIT IS SUPERSEDED/OBSOLETE/NO LONGER AVAILABLE IE THIS ONLY APPLIES IN THE CASE OF A SO-CALLED ‘LEGACY’ BENEFIT. Council Tax Benefit or discount not being a legacy benefit, the reason Kirklees Council gave me is a lie. Basically, Kirklees fear nothing now. They are not even held to fairness by the Courts, who rubber-stamp whatever is asked, bundles of hundreds of Council Tax ‘liability order’ cases are shoved through at a time, despite not being similar, and by this method Kirklees make maybe £250,000 profit from Court work a year, as they charge the poorest Council Tax payers £104 in Court fees every time. I was not allowed to be heard, nor represent myself at my Court Hearing for the Council Tax liability order. Told Councillors. Told MP. Nothing can be done it seems. Why? Because I presume, we no longer live in a democratic society. The courts are so hard-pressed, they entirely depend on one of the adversary parties in council tax cases, for administrative support. That party - the council - thoroughly and corruptly abuse this strange and unjust perk, by simply ignoring or not allowing the other adversary in the court ‘battle’ to either be telephoned or to appear in person! The Audit Commission is dead and buried, and I think with it, any sense of fair play from my council or the local courts. It’s Russia, and I am not even overstating the issue.

not really much increase earnings at work when cost of living crises keeps on eating up our wages,I work,Pay rent,Pay Council tax,Pay high energy costs,Pay expensive foods,By the time ive paid out,Be luckly enough to have about £20 left,Not much increase really,We paying money our our earnings to pay for Migrants to keep on coming in to the UK if thats what every one wants !!!!!!

Although I was deemed unfit to work, I chose to do self employment so I could manage my disabilities. I worked 7 days a week and had no holidays. When I was too poorly to work I could use 52 week linking. I saved hard to save a nest egg for my pension.I bought premium bonds and did very well. Now I'm being migrated from a non means tested benefit they are going to count my pension savings so I will not be allowed anything as I have over 16k. It's really unfair to think I could have stayed on the sick 32 years ago on £120 non taxable benefit. I chose to work to stop me vegetating and now I'm really burn out and can't work any more as my conditions are much worse, they have transitioned me onto universal from working taxed credits .Also I've got another 5 1/2 yrs to go to get my pension. All my pension savings are now going to be used to pay my living expenses and all because I worked instead of sitting on my bumper and saved as hard As I could.

I live in his borough - when he was energy secratary he caused my fuel bills to increase £100 a year as I was a responsible user and didn't use much and yet him increasing standing charge by the amount he did caused that.
