The seaside towns are just a graphic mirror of the whole country. And, it's no one else's fault except the British themselves. Until, they stop blaming everyone else (e.g the EU, immigrants etc) the decline will continue.

The answer to this question is very simple, having worked for 30 years in supermarket retailing and living in a socially deprived area myself - even in the years before Covid, people were shopping online, because they were encouraged to do so, while business rates and other overheads for “bricks and mortar” shops were massively increased and online shopping massively increased during Covid lockdowns - so-called “regeneration” (vanity) projects by Labour-controlled councils in socially deprived areas in the years before Covid turned out to be of no real benefit to people in those areas and in some cases, even made their situation worse - either way, this situation is clearly by design

I've lived here my entire life, it's a decent place to live. And better than most seaside towns

Slough is a dump, it always has been and always will be. It sucks the life out of everyone who lives here.

It's because British resorts are crap. Ok if you've got no alternative, which was their heyday, but nobody wants overpriced (British prices) and substandard, when cheaper and better is availible, with the weather guranteed. I mean, of you think it's bad south coast (Hastings has always been a grubby dump BTW. Used to live in Brighton, I know all the tiwns along there, right through to Doeset, Devon and Cornwall, but at least there, you've got proper sand beaches, not crippling to bare feet, pebbles. You want to see rundown seasode resort dump? Blackpool in the west. Cleethorpes in the east. All the north west coast tesorts are shit, because of the stinking, filthy polluted, Irish Sea (the only place I've rver seen grey sea foam). Also, pollution is a major problem to most British seaside resorts now. Worse than ever. Dead fish and crabs washing up in their thousands and dog walkers reporting their dogs getting sick after walkking them on the beach (Teesside dredging caused an (news supressed) ecological disaster in 2022. Beaches wrre effected as far north as Sunderland and as far south as Whitby. That said. I got sick after swimming in the sea at Weymouth. So it's everywhere, except maybe the remoter parts of Scotland, Wales and Cornwall. Wild, windy and remote.

Lived here for a couple years, all I can say is that there’s fuck all to do and the university is terrible, they somehow ruined studying history in a 2000 year old city.

Well done. You'll probably find most of the locals in the Wetherspoons there, the Star! I've visited once, in 2004, via the Portsmouth-Gosport passenger ferry, to visit said Wetherspoons and a local beer festival. It's historic connection is with Portsmouth, as a major Naval town. Both places seem to have suffered dramatic declines, mainly down to the defence cuts. Post-millennium and post-covid have probably intensified the deprivation. I bet until 30 years ago, every pub in Gosport and Portsmouth would've been packed when the sailors were on leave. I should think now they've lost 50% of those pubs. You can see the regeneration in Portsmouth, mainly down to the large student population, with modern residential blocks all around. Sadly, it looks like Gosport has been left behind. Such an abandoned town, UK isn't in good shape. In my hometown on Albania the streets would be thriving with people and vendors despite being "poorer"

Your just looking at the town centre, just off there is St. James shopping complex which most of the town shops relocated, also too to Whitfield. Dover has some excellent parks..Wetherspoons is not what you discribed, I was there this afternoon, I don't do pubs, but it was very friendly... Sadly the weather was not good in July, August was good, the seafront was bustling with tourist, watersports, walkers and cyclist...The white cliffs what missed off is teeming with tourist taking in the famous cliffs and countryside... As to littler, I personally think our local council do a good job in keeping the town clean. Also its a town, not a city...

This is why crime statistics alone cannot give a full picture of how nice or safe an area is. I think there are a bunch of circumstantial reasons why more arrests take place in Westgate that don't relate to the area being worrisome. - Night time economy - next to a park - It's where police often park to patrol the highstreet on busy nights... so maybe some crimes happened further down the highstreet, but get recorded as Westgate which warps the statistics?
