This one has been about 6 months in the making and is a refinement on the previous version CS7 headstamp sorter rather than a completely new design. Thanks for the detailed video ... I have replayed the video over and over, and I don't know where the camera wires plug in? There are four wires after cutting off the USB end! 1. White 2. Red 3. Green 4. Black. I assume as always red is power, and black is ground, but the green and white? No mention as to their location. In your video you have marked it with "C" for camera, but skipped the part to connect. Your help is greatly appreciated and thank you very much for your time and commitment to this project. I'm so close 😀

      Oops! Cutting the USB connector off was a mistake for sure. The camera connects to the computer over USB. The camera construction is covered in a separate video. CHeck out the description of this video where there is a link to the reloadingrecipes site. That has all the build videos. Also once you create an account, you will have access to the discord group which will greatly help you complete your build and you can get very quick help.

    This is pretty awesome but I have a question\suggestion\idea... What about sorting cases according to caliber prior to headstamp? Would it be possible to have a spinning wheel with a certain diameter hole that permit certain calibers to fall into and then the wheel would deposit the case into the appropriate bin? Kinda of a stage 1 prior to this stage type of thing, but 2 separate machines? Just food for thought.

    I am curious about the abnormality section. I see when I look on there it will show me the headstamp as I classified it and then the prediction is a different headstamp followed by confidence percentage and true or false. I have been going through to manual change those so they should read as true is that correct or should I leave that alone?

    • @sjseth-builds
      @sjseth-builds Před 5 měsíci

      First, you should definitely join the Discord group as that is the best place to get help on these kinds of questions. To answer more specifically though, the anomalies detection allows you to find those headstamps which you may have misclassified initially. I don't see any reason you couldn't use a raspberry pi. You would definitely be on your own in regards to the wiring and programming though. The arduino code might work on the pi but I haven't tried it. Ultimately the software uses serial communication to comm with the micro controller so as long as you handle that portion, in theory it could work.

    The brass-sorting by squeezing is brilliant.

    Hello - collecting parts for building this - Ive noticed in all your videos the brass still has the old primer installed. Does your system work as well on decapped brass ? Im thinking i would sort after everything had been cleaned...

      Yes, it works with decapped brass as well. Definitely better to clean the brass before running it through the system.

    Can the software be modified to detect berdan primers by the primer diameter?

    • @sjseth-builds
      @sjseth-builds Před 8 měsíci

      I don't believe there is any detectable difference in size for berdan primers so probably not possible based on that, but the berdan primed brass usually has an associated headstamp that it could sort by.

      I did think of headstamps but some are both types of primer. Large rifle berdan has a larger diameter cthan boxer, etc…. Is it possible to use the camera to look down the neck (invert the case) to look for one flash hole in the Center?

    • @sjseth-builds
      @sjseth-builds Před 8 měsíci

      I don't think the machine could do this as it stands today. You would have to be able to focus the camera and the light to look into the cases and then alignment would be an issue as well

      I mean, theoretically it's possible with this machine but would take some tinkering

    Good day love the work huge respect..just a question would it be able to use the same system to sort say 9mm .40 , 45 ,357 ,38spl and have the AI concentrate on the size eg 9 40 45 380 regardless of head stamp but rather the case size thank you

      This machine will probably never sort by size as there are much cheaper and better methods to do that already. Check out these: amzn.to/4alg1Jb

    While the project is super cool, the usefulness for average reloader is not so much or at least for me. What I would really care if you could make a variation of this to sort 22LR empty shells by headstamp. That is something I do for making swage bullets and having a machine do it would be very cool.

    Its an interesting project but why are you even putting all of that time, effort, work, and money into merely sorting cases of the same caliber by their head stamp? I have been reloading 9mm, 357, and 45acp for over 10 years and no problem due to having mixed head stamps

    • @sjseth-builds
      @sjseth-builds Před 8 měsíci

      As for why I did this specific project, it is mostly because I enjoy this stuff and it is somewhat within my line of work (ai & machine learning). In regard to why sort brass by headstamp, as you have rightly observed, you don't need to sort brass by headstamp to make reliable functioning ammo and as someone who has been reloading for over 30 years, I fully understand that. However, there are times when we want to sort our brass by headstamp and when we do, it is a painfully manual process. As to why sort by headstamp, the benefits not huge, but do matter. To observe the benefit, from a ransom rest at 50 yards with a chronograph/radar, fire 50 rounds of non sorted reloads from a ransom rest and then 50 of sorted. There is a measurable difference. Competitive shooters often want every advantage they can. If my loads are more consistent, then I can safely hover closer above the PF requirements. If I am a bullseye shooter, every bit of accuracy matters. Also consider this: If you were going to buy 500 pieces of once fired 9mm and you were given the option for either random headstamps or single headstamp and the price was the same, what would you choose? I believe all things equal, 99.9% of us would choose the single headstamp because consistency matters. I might even be willing to pay a bit more for the single headstamp brass. The machine also sorts by primer size, primed/unprimed, upsidedown primers, etc. Folks who are running automated presses benefit from the preflight checks. Some folks are doing 223 to 300blk cutdowns and there are certain manufactures brass which doesn't work for this reason as the walls are too thick. They want to sort out those "bad" headstamps automatically before doing the cutdowns. etc, etc ,etc. That said, there are definitely reasons. 😁😁
