End of the ferret penthouse
A bit of a sad day today as I strip out the ferret penthouse, ready to move on to something new.
I'll be reusing as much of the pipes as I can for the area where the ferrets are now.

Night vision footage of a couple of nights feral pigeon shooting. This is at the same place I was shooting rats at in my last video. I was shooting with my Air arms S510 Ultimate Sporter in .177, with my Nitesite Wolf night vision. Over the 2 nights I think I've shot in the region of about 60 feral pigeons.

Couple of hours shooting rats at a new permission. This was first time there so was more of a look to see what was what. Think I shot about 15, I picked up 13 at the end of the night, also shot two rabbits sat in the field behind, 1 at 35 yards and 1 at 75 yards in strong wind. I was shooting with a browning T bolt in 22 rimfire that's why some of the rats weren't head shot. A 22 hollowpoint te...

Where did you buy the Velcro collars from?
eBay, they are the puppy or kitten feeding collars. They come in a pack of about 10 different colours so you know which puppy is which etc. just make sure you buy the correct width to fit through the mark 3 tracker. If I remember correctly it's 13mm 🤔
aww
God bless um they so beautiful 😍
I was told something about ferrets but I don't know if it's true or not that's why I'm gonna ask you. Do ferrets have a Musky smell about them?
Yea they smell. Not sure I would call it musky, but they have their own scent. More so when they are in season.
I know this is an older video years old I face but thought to keep this video going it needs some activity happening lol , I agree with you on handling and one other thing and that is having them well fed , hungry ferrets will go for the chomp of a hand , found this out from ferrets I received from other person they were hungry and very bitey, a few feeds and handling they came good and love being handled now , awesome videos mate great job.👍
I really like your set up for your ferrets buddy , the ferrets love it to , perfect place for ferrets , they certainly know how to get around it ,you have given me some ideas for my own ferrets , it keeps them active fit and housed and entertained , no mental health problems for those guys lol. 👍
Thanks,.yeah the more enrichment they can have the better in my opinion.
How did you fasten the pipe to the wood?
Cable ties
@@ruralpestcontrol how did you fasten the cable ties to the wood though?
Staples the U shaped nails. Don't hammer them all the way in so they leave you a loop to thread the cable tie through. If that makes sense
Brilliant ❤
It's a lovely set up for the ferrets and clean I've had ferrets most of my life just love em
Thanks

Love your ferret set up. Found you after looking up training ferrets to hunt rats. Came up with the video where the youngters are clambering all over you. Sound advice. We have a small hobby farm with a few goats and chickens in Lancashire and have a rat population. Shot a few and shepherds have killed some but, we know they are breeding. Seriously considering a few ferrets to send down the holes they have made in a few locations. But wonder if we invest in keeping them and they are interested. Would you have any advise please?
Personally I've never used ferrets to catch rats. I know people do use them and do do it. But if you send a ferret down a rat hole and the rat runs out you'd need some way of stopping/catching the rat when it does. Either net with small enough holes or a dog quick enough to catch the rat.
Yes I think my cross malinios is pretty swift@@ruralpestcontrol she got a nip off one but still eager to catch them. We know someone with a working Jill. So hope he has some terriers to bring with her too if he can find the time. Thanks for getting back to me. All the Best 🎄
iv got a litter of kits and they are 5 weeks and 1 day old but only a few of them have opened one eye and i was wondering is that is ok or not
Yeah perfectly normally, they'll open both in the coming days.
Put nest boxes off the floor about 3ft keeps them cleaner
Cool, I still need to work out all details of what's going where. But any advice ideas greatly appreciated 👍
@ruralpestcontrol and if you can you could put a access hatch from the outside to collect the eggs without going in

You done much ferreting mate
Not for 3 years now mate sold all my gear at the beginning of this year
@@ruralpestcontrol how come mate
@@neilgilbert830 theres no rabbits round here now. Plus my dad's health isn't the best so he can't come with me. So I basically decided to pack up working the ferrets and sold all my gear at the beginning of this year. I was gonna re-home all the ferrets but I've been talked into keeping the last 4 I have.
It's a bit sad seeing the penthouse life less the ferrets were bundles of fun and joy youl miss them I have kept ferrets for years I used to work them then I had a 20 year break from them when I moved house I went in to keeping birds in avarys but got the ferrets back now they are in a big aviary I don't work them there just pets but the pleasure of seeing them in a natural environment now is on a different level the birds were great to watch but that's all you can do is watch were with the ferrets you can interact with them hours and hours of fun I did the best thing in getting the ferrets back hoping to get a mink next year check out are channel the cat and ferret good luck with your next chapter chickens etc
I still have four ferrets that I'm keeping I'm gonna be rebuilding an area for them. They're in a hutch that I'm gonna add the pipes to. I won't be working them again as there's no rabbits around here and I've sold off all my equipment at the beginning of this year. I was gonna re-home them all but I've been talked into keeping the ones I have left.
@@ruralpestcontrol that's good thanks for replying I have 4 2 eu polcats and 2 white ones all hobs the polcats are like mink there little swines ha boss tho they bit hard the battles out of them are boss
@@carld9451 I had two half eu Jill's a few years ago and they would not get on with one of my other Jill's. I ended up rehoming them in the end. I did breed a litter off one of them and I still have a Jill from that litter today, and a hob from her litter 3 years ago.
@@ruralpestcontrol so far they have been sound with the other ferrets also with them all being castrated helps they have all been together now for 18 months no need to seperate them in the breeding season its going to be interesting next year when I get the mink I can do videos on them how they get on did ye check out are channel the cat and ferret lad cheers mate
@@carld9451not yet but I will 👍
Shame about the ferrets, but I have been enjoying watching your biking videos with bramble. Would love to see the process of building the chicken coop too, you could even put a hutch in there and have quails also😂
Yeah I can do a video of the coop build starting with me stripping out the penthouse. I'll be starting that in the coming weeks so I can do updates. They'll be more biking videos and paddle boarding too. Thinking about getting a 360 camera but that won't be until next year now.
Hi we are moving our Jill 8 and hob 8 month outside from indoor having a room to themselves….any advice re moving from indoors to outdoors…gradually? We will keep bringing them into play and some days and nights keep them indoors do a mix really…any thoughts? Thanks
I think they should be fine as long as they have the usual water bedding activities etc I don't see why there should be any issues
What's the rabbit population up your end..this vh disease deadly.been hit hard down south..hardly see a dead one on the road
There's very little rabbits around here, more hares now. We have a lot more buzzards and kites than there's ever been to. I've packed in with the ferrets now. Not been out with them for 3 years this December.

A nice realistic video compared to end of the world doom n gloom in outher comment sections. Plenty right here 👍😆
it was the end of the world for them ferals 😂😂😂😂
Great job mate , what was done with the dead one's?
Nothing, 1st time I shot them the cattle had paddled most of them into their bedding and the rats had started eating the rest.
Do you ever feed your ferrets Kibbles?
Yes sometimes over summer to help stop flies. If I do give them dry food the only dry food I buy is ferret feast. It has to be a high protein content. I think at least 40% but don't quote me on that
Where do you get your bedding from?
The shavings I get from a local agricultural country store. You can buy them in a bale for around £10. The shredded newspaper, is just my dad's old newspapers that I shred myself with a paper shredder.
@@ruralpestcontrol do you think shredded paper for bedding is better than straw or hay?
@@kayedal-haddad I found with straw there was a lot of damp and moisture in the nest box. Never had it once with shredded paper so stuck with it

Its me again with yet another question 😁 What is the sizing of the hutches please
I usually build them 4' X 2' X 2'
Hi I am just designing an outdoor enclosure for my ferrets and am inspired by what you have. I have a couple of questions if thats ok. What size did you make the nest box. Do the ferrets ever fall off your shelves. I have a jill and a hob would you make and area they can be seperated if needed. If you were to rebuild is there anything you would do differently. Sorry there are so many questions I just want to try and get this right first time :)
The nest box is about 2'x2'x18" I think. Yes they're always falling off the shelves, they tend to knock each other off. I separated mine with separate hutches when needed. This was only for when Jill's were pregnant, or I had a hob in season I didn't want to breed from. Rest of the time they're all together. I'm not sure what I would do differently, because I've added and changed things over the years. You'll probably never get it right first time, so the only thing I can say is build it as big as your space will allow. You can keep adding enrichment inside as you go along.
@@ruralpestcontrol Thankyou for your reply I shall keep planning ;)
Just realised you uploaded, good video, I missed watching ur channel
Thanks, it has been a while looking at taking the channel in a different direction
So adorable!! ❤
I once had a ferret which was biting very much at the beginning until I found out that she was deaf! She could not hear me saying "hello" and was biting just because she was afraid of being attacked or so. Then I started to move my hand in front of her face to grasp her attention instead of touching her. After a while we created a sign language including "come here", "good girl", "no" e.g. I had the feeling her friend was not too happy with the situation, because I recognized less interaction between the two ferrets, although they loved each other, played and slept together. Every time she was running through my appartement she needed to wear a little bell - from the chocolate bunnies 😂. Unfortunately she tended to fall asleep so I could not hear and sometimes not find her. Only when I moved out I figured out where her secret place was. She could never fully relax when I held or petted her, up to a few weeks before her death. Finally I had all her trust and heart. RIP little girl.❤ Would I get another deaf ferret. Yes, no doubt!
I guess the more one screams when getting bitten, the more interesting it will be for the little rascals 😉
