Back in the day when there were few of us REAL surfers who did it to feel the soal of the ocean and contact with nature and the power of the ever changing sea. Its a dhit show out there these days... sad.

I chatted with George a couple times at the back beaches of Byron Bay in early morning surfs back in the late 80s. Just a handful of us out and he'd float by and talk your ear off about cosmic water engineering things I could hardly understand and then he'd slip by on the deepest barrel. Hah always wondered if I'd been had but he's the man that went deep so full respect.

my father first put me on an air-mat just south of the Imperial Beach Pier when i was 9 i think. it wasn't a tiny wave that he pushed me off onto....i was scared to death but found it was fun.....you went fast!! a handful of years later, because of this man, i became a dedicated knee-rider, for nearly 30 years....to see him mat-surf is a pleasure....pure, simple....and what can i say? zooOOOOom thank you!

Kinda interesting how as I’ve aged and suffered a few injuries I’ve gone back to bodysurfing, boogie boarding, mat riding etc… definitely reconnecting with the pure stoke of it again. Mats and paipo are the most consistent fun

When I try to get on the mat, I get crumpled and hold onto it. So when you ride it, you get cramps in your hands. How do you climb so smoothly?

Me and my friends were mat surfing in San Francisco back in 1970 I was about 12 years old.
