What I never understood was why people think they need a magnum to kill anything but then bring a pistol for bear defense and somehow thats fine? A. 223 is technically more "powerful" than a 10mm cartridge, but you wouldn't dare bring a .223 for bear defense. I'm not arguing against pistols, I think peopes mentality needs to change when considering small rifle cartridges for big game.

Has to have red LED. Has to have a metal frame. Prefer Bluetooth capable to fine tune the brightness levels. And something NEEDS to be said about headlamp etiquette! Stop looking at people with your freakin 12,000 lumen torch! You want the power of the sun on your forehead, take responsibility for blinding people. Also, I live in an Alaskan town where people pay big money to visit and vacation too. They walk down our roads at night with their bright headlamps looking at houses and into windows without realizing what they are doing. Turn those lumens down you scared-i-cats😂 ! Those people are the same who say: “I love hiking/camping in the dark”. Then proceed to turn the immediate area into daylight with all their lights. 🤷🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️ Just something to consider, you know, to be considerate. 👍

All these vids have been great so far but I disagree with the complaints on Peax with this one. Peax by far has the best red light - that should be a consideration here. Complaining about a headache with the Peax being an extra ounce seems whiny and likely not true. That would be like whining you get a headache blowing up your sleeping pad instead of using a battery operated blowup one, which you yourself said you shouldn’t even be out there if you can’t do that which I agree with.

I'm guessing the comments will have a lot of differnt headlamps people like - which is awesome reference for those looking into one. My favoret BY FAR is the O-Lamp Perun 2. First the Con - its one of the heavier headlamps (personally I dont care). Pros (and there are a lot) - 3 main settings (not included strobe and SOS also) plus super bright setting my buddies and me call Daylight Mode (its that brignt) / fully rechargeable / recharge outlet is magnetic / magnetic charging base allows you to stick the lamp anywhere metal around camp to use as alternate light source / memory setting / close to person or object autodim / great beam intensity and spotlighting / at lower power great wide beam / side and top head band to assure solid fit / 360 pivot for whatever angle you want the light and easily turned / Can be removed easily from the headlamp strap to turn into a regular flashlight or even have clip added to attach to bino harness or other items / low battery vibration notification / lockout mode / moonlight mode / long runtime - if you cant tell I am a big fan. Nothing else comes close for me but some may not like the size/weight factor. Personally for me an extra 2 ounces give or take for a premium piece of kit is more than worth it . Its a great all around headlamp. If weight and size really is a turnoff for some I'd suggest the Fenix HM 50R V2 1lumen.com/review/olight-perun-2/

Hey guys for what's its worth here's my opinion on the trekking pole straps no straps controversy non-controversy after almost two decades of using them. In elk country straps are awesome, in rocky mountain big horn country they suck. Going up steep rocky crags you find yourself always having to pulling your hands out of the straps to grip the poles below the grips. Coming down steep knarwly crags the palms of your hands are on the very top of the poles more often than they are on the grips. In this scenario the strap winds up between the palm of your hand and the top of the pole, uncomfortable as hell. So elk and deer hunting I use my poles that have straps, sheep hunting I go without. In both scenarios I use velcro to tie my poles together to use them as shooting sticks when the time comes. Best of luck in Alaska, Mike

Well I learnt something… I tried a quilt for the first time last weekend. Pretty cheap 35 degree quilt on a 4.4r pad. I was pretty warm at 50 degrees. Here’s the anomaly- I was in a argali floorless shelter 🤦‍♂️ which means I couldn’t stick a leg out for warmth. Definitely think that floorless shelters work better with sleeping bags.
