Welcome to my channel! Join me on my journey with this new 2024 Toyota GR86 Trueno Edition. This is my first new car purchase, and I wish to share with you in numerous ways what a drivers car has to offer. I've been a gear head for as long as I could remember. I've worked in the automotive industry primarily as an Engineering Test Driver for numerous companies and brands. I'm passionate to share my knowledge and experiences with you all. I'll be uploading 1 video a week!
First Oil Change @ 1k miles - MotoiQ - 2024 GR86 Trueno Edition
I took my Trueno to @motoiq where a buddy of mine that works there set my appointment for my first oil change! Its typical after break in to change it at 1k miles, sometimes less. Usually during break in, its normal to have some engine debris show up in the oil. Its a good precaution to take to change it out, while also having peace of mind. I go into detail with my oil choice, fill level, and why for those that drive their 86/BRZ in any spirited way on the street should consider it too. Track conditions are different, but that will have to be another video in the near future. I also saw some cool builds at MotoIQ and I had to walk around and share :)

Bro is legit just steering lmao
😅 you sure that thing doesn't have a peddle dance? sounds and looks to still have a bit of traction control on...
So, why didn't you change trans & dif oil???
@@Felix-h5n Great question! Toyota recommends 30k for both manual transmission and differential oil change. CounterSpace Garage suggested for track use, suggests between 2-5 track events the oil breaks down and doesn’t protect as much. I won’t go to the track consistently until next year, but I will plan on upgrading the fluid later this fall when I change the engine oil/filter again for track prep.
@@shift__robinson I have BRZ tS - with only 1000 miles - tomorrow I'm changing both trans & dif oil - using Motul Gear 75W90 100% synthetic (as you know during the first 500-1000 miles there's the most metal in oil)... and certainly, changing the engine oil as well.
@@Felix-h5n Very cool and congratulations on the Ts! It definitely wouldn’t hurt doing Motul now. That’s my oil of choice as well for the drivetrain. How do you like owning it so far?
@@shift__robinson A+++ 🙂 You?
@@Felix-h5n Same here! I keep falling for the car more each time I drive it! Are you going to track yours too?
You didn't have the oil pan pulled and clean the gasket material from pick up tube? Im at 500 miles and a bit worried if i need to for the oil change cause of whole rtv shaving etc.
@@ANTlJENOVA Great point! I didn’t only because I’m still just street driving it and also for the sake of not doing it twice, I do plan on baffling it before I begin my track journey. I saw that Versus Engineering has a version 3 prototype large capacity oil pan that is being tested now and I’m hoping to get it once available. Then I’ll do everything at once :) If it gives you peace of mind, I would do it. For me, it isn’t too much of a worry at this moment.
Nice video man I love it
@@Itz_AndrewW Aye, I’m glad you liked it🙏🏽 I appreciate it!
simply overfilling your oil will not solve the problem at all, but just mask it. It is better that you install a properly baffled oil pan, or an upgraded pickup in your pan in order to prevent starvation. Or both. by overfilling you are risking problems with your plugs, injectors or any other valve train components that should not see such levels. you are going to also cause potential leaks and premature gasket failure.
@@Gas45678 You’re 💯 % correct, it isn’t a solution. The over fill and viscosity changes were really focused towards the daily spirited drivers to help mitigate oil thinning out under harsher conditions and/or causing too much of an oil drop in the back roads if even those levels of speed even are reached, and quite possibly one track day from the HPDE voucher from Toyota upon purchase. Also yes, overfilling too much can cause additional issues under certain circumstances, however the extra .5-7 added for the daily driver wouldn’t, nor has there been any reports to cause the extra you’ve mentioned above. If we’re talking about the car going to track setting consistently, under those extreme circumstances there are numerous other steps necessary to help mitigate the pressure drops including the baffling you mentioned. I’m planning to share (a brief version) all the collective data I’ve seen reported from those on their own or from GR Cup. Thanks for chiming in 👍🏽
Amsoil seems really popular online with forums/facebook/youtube, however when speaking to friends and family members who are mechanics at Honda and Toyota they almost unanimously recommend Mobil1.
At the end of the day, it would be really hard to find a “bad” oil that wouldn’t meet today’s standards. Those are all great choices, and also more easily accessible. There has been data comparison from oil tests out there showing Amsoil outperforming (not by much) in numerous areas. Change your oil on time and you’ll be fine :)
Word. I changed to 10w40 Motul break-in mineral oil at 200 miles (the soonest I could get it done) and again at 500 miles, then 5w30 Pennzoil Ultra Platinum at 1000 (~6 qts). Bro just rawdogged that first cold start after the change though! 🤣 I always do the priming sequence after an oil change (hold clutch + gas + press start) to turn the engine over slowly for about 10 seconds and get the oil system primed before doing a normal startup.
@@jaron95 That’s a good procedure, that works well 👍🏽 Oh no, I didn’t show that part. It was already primed and checked haha
@@shift__robinson Ahh haha of course, look who I'm talkin to 😁🤝

At 17:00 I believe “drive lane” depends on the country you’re in. Left lane for Australia or Japan, for example. I have a 2024 BRZ tS. Thanks for the detailed walkthrough. Now I don’t have to read the owner’s manual. I also have a 2022 WRX GT. So, I have some experience with Eyseight.
@@AlanAnt Ahh that makes sense. Thank you for sharing that! It’s one detail I couldn’t figure out and since I don’t like to use the driver assist features, I didn’t dig further. Happy to save you time 👍🏽 Congratulations on the Ts! We basically have sister cars! Cool collection. How do you like the BRZ compared to the WRX GT?
@@shift__robinson I like them both, but the GT wasn’t scratching the sports car in the mountains zoom. The BRZ is my toy.
@@AlanAnt Very cool. Each had its own purpose and it sounds like you are scratching the sports car itch well 🙂
Slow ass cars. Anybody considering buying one, don’t. It is very underwhelming.
@@avilescarlos411 Considering today’s new car market, the claim isn’t that it’s a fast car. It’s a drivers car that’s meant to be fun in the turns. People that are drivers, will want to purchase this car. So your claim is invalid as it is a biased opinion. What are you comparing it to that makes it underwhelming to you?
@@shift__robinsonthey’re full of shit. I have a 718 gts 4.0 as well as a gr86 and the 86 does not feel slow to me. You’re still faster than the majority of street traffic (if you know how to shift) which is all you need.
@@ak740_ Thank you for the validation! Porsche’s are respectfully top in their class. For the 86 to scratch the realm of a Cayman is impressive in my book. I wish to own a Porsche someday so it’s something to look forward to 🤙🏽

have they update the linear throttle response with the remaining 2024 models? have a deposite down on a trueno white too
@@Nu11S3t Great question! From what I can tell the throttle does respond well to your inputs. I’ve driven some other newer cars that have terrible response or give 80% with 20% input, etc. Congrats on that. I think you’ll really enjoy it 🙂
The fake sound is to help you know when to shift so you don't need a louder exhaust. That's the idea, not that I agree with it at all.
@@awepossum1059 I realized that after I disconnected it 😅 However, at least the t indicator works like it should. I’ll add a little sound because when I plan to go to the track, I wouldn’t hear much through a helmet unfortunately.

What oil filter are you using?
@@stevef3521 Amsoil’s oil filter.
@@shift__robinsonany reason you chose Amsoil over running the made in Japan Subaru or Toyota filter? That’s an awesome car!
@@stevef3521 Great question! Mainly to match products, oil and filter. They work best with each other for what its advertised to do. Overall, it allows more flow without compromising too much filtration. Although, the best filtration will always be oem. Thank you! 🙏🏽 Do you have a GR yourself?
I dont live in mountainous areas since I'm from Houston but that's so interesting and cool to see those pullouts where they can let cars pass safely.
@@SolidMGSnake Ahh yes, must be very flat where you are. There are plenty of drifters and highway demons out there. Some people use the turnouts, which is nice. Many others may not care or are oblivious to traffic piling up behind them 🥲
As long as you don't go on a race track, this car is great. This car suffers from low oil pressure in righthand corners which causes the engine to fail.
@@samserious1337 You can very much go to the track, and plenty do. Just like any car, there are some steps to take to prep it to run it safely. There’s plenty of information proving it to be a solid platform.
Nice meme
@@jaron95 Haha yup!
@@shift__robinson There is plenty of information that you should NOT go on a race track with this car, you only can mitigate the oil pressure drop problem by short shifting, 0.5-1.0L oil overfill, oil pan baffle and/or installing an accumulator.
@@samserious1337 Then don't buy one and quit clicking on these videos. Bro's obviously very knowledgeable about his purchase and you're just here to troll. 🥱

Are you going to do the breakin procedure of not revving the engine passed 4K rpms until 1000 miles?
Great question! I've had that sitting on my mind for a bit. I think now that you mentioned it, I should do it sooner rather than later. I actually have a different break in approach that people might find enlightening.
The most technically optimal way to breakin an engine is to rev it at every different point of the rpm range so that the engine components are exposed to different pressures. You can find manufacturers and engineers talk about this. This is what i've done for all my cars beit new or 28 years old with a new engine. It's the best way imo and you can safely beat on an engine at the track even when you don't use it for 6 months.
@@patrickarceo6015 I 💯% agree with your above statement 🫡
Correct. Do it progressively. Do 3500 for 300 miles, 4500 for 300 miles, then slowly push over 5000+
@@ericdebroux9685 There’s a lot more to it than just that.
If u put a turbo on it, u add 75lbs towards front of the engine , and it messes up the balance of the car
💯!
Nah, just rear mount the turbo
@@Derkenblosh2 That’s a possibility 👍🏽
That's why you supercharge it and it won't throw nothing off.
Nah, mass transfer will fix this as soon as it moves. Braking might be a little trickier though.
