Atlas F Missile Silo Willsboro NY - Level 3
I was hoping I could use the fill and vent shaft to get the 240 volt pump in, but for now I will have to run it up the stairs then move it to the escape shaft once I cut the welds off later this month. Still not got that focus sorted out, by the time I checked it was bad I was too tired to go back down. Walking up and down those steps a few times is about the limit my knees can take. Getting old really sucks!

Atlas F LCC Lower Level now accessible. As part of the permit requirements I need keep records of the GPD pumped and also for interest I record the water level each day too. So that had been less each day for the past week and last night I realized that that is probably due to the water dropping in the silo access tunnel. A 2 hour trip downstairs added lights to the Lower LCC and cut some more ...

Had to replace lights string as condensation was causing corrosion of the lamp caps due to no water tight seals on the lamp holders. Surprised that the escape hatch is welded closed and not just a couple of inches but all around. Pumping proceeding 20k GPD is about 8 to 9.5 inches per day so expect to be in the LCC lower in 2-3 weeks.

For Tony, the previous owner who wanted to pump out the silo 22 years ago. After testing the new filters over the winter I was surprised on how well they work. Reduced the "phenols" to undetectable at 14 GPM and also undetectable at 2x nominal flow. So no need to reduce the discharge rate as I was expecting. The plan is pump at the daily limit of 20k GPD at much as I can. Interested to see how ...

Winter project to save the office block. I was intending to replace a few joists and had them here ready but as you can see its well past that stage. So new plan concrete block the outside walls, prop up the inside walls with screw jacks, fill in with 130 ton of stone and then cap it off with 3" concrete. Should be done in a week right.

@noddysyacht Got the propane geny working, Well George at Sol-ark did - thanks 1/ I would like that the geny could charge the battery say at 3KW while at the same time sell to the grid at 3Kw. That would allow me to make KW credits at the same time as I extract ever BTU to heat my place. 2/ It would appear that when off grid the Sol-Ark does not use the battery as primary source with the genera...
Atlas F Missile Silo Willsboro NY Pumping Permit 2024

Permit went for public comment in December so maybe around April pumping can start. Due to new found issue "Phenols" in the Silo I now have to change the filter type to remove the phenols so hung the pipes to drain back into the Silo which will allow me to work on a solution to that problem. The phenols are not a product of the Silo but appear to be naturally contaminant as they are found in hi...
Atlas F Missile Silo Willsboro NY-Office Floor rotting away

This is the 6 room office block at the back of the Quonset Huts, I think it was an add on to the link built around 1980. It was all sealed off when we bought the place in 2018 and the wood floor area is unsafe. The rot is progressing and may result in a collapse so for winter I intend to prop up the walls and prep for a insulted concrete floor.

So pleased the snow has gone, expect the permit to pump will be end of May. The water from the Silo has to be on the property, one of the suggested places was the sunken loading bay, so this was a quick test to how fast it would fill. Or not, seems to drain away fast, if doggo's are going to get there pool the loading bay is going to have to be lined.

So I heard from one of the other silo owners that the steel I-Beams under the Silo Cap Doors were used for closing them. The hydrolics were removed with the doors open and I-beams were placed across with wooden boards and large amounts of hay bales over them. The Doors were then pushed onto the hay by heavy equipment with the hay then lit on fire. As everything burned, the doors slowly closed into position with only the I-beams remaining under them. The I-beams were possibly bent from the extreme heat. Reply

wow WOW *WOW* , incredible!!! My cousin's family and I always go up to the Adirondacks every year for a weekend or so and this year just by chance we're doing an Airbnb in Willsboro. I was having a look around google maps and noticed an ICBM site literally across the street! After a bit sleuthing on here I was shocked to find this amazing record of the site's current rehabilitation! We're kind of into nuclear technology and history and it would be absolutely amazing for us to be able to see the site. Is there any possibility at all that we could stop by and have a quick peek around? Do you have an email address I could contact you at? There are only 5 of us total and we would of course be very respectful of your time and property if we had the chance to stop by. Thanks much for all the interesting video of the work you are doing at the site here!

Great progress with draining the silo - considering the level of filtration you're applying to the water you bring out I think 15 inches a day is amazing. So fascinating to see how much of the infrastructure they left behind. I guess at the end of the day there probably wasn't much of a market for it on that scale. Thanks for sharing your journey on this project.

I believe there are 10 of these atlas silos in upper NY I used to live by some titan missle silos in arizona. One by my house they halfassed the concrete pour when they decommissioned them and you could crawl down the main shaft and get into the actual base which was partially full of flash flood water and mud. By now, i would think that mother nature finished the process and its just packed to the brim with mud/flood debris.

Permit is limited 20k gal/day 14 gal/min BUT to remove the phenols that will have to be slow to give the longest contact time with the large carbon filters so 2-3 gal/min = 2" per day in the.Silo. Out of the 90 plus substances tested, phenols was a surprise, EPA limit for phenols is 2 ppb, Silo is 56ppb, post filter 43ppb, my land 50ppb & neighbors woods 150ppb. Work continues but even with 2" per day 2 months the top level of the LCC will be accessible.
