Comprehensive Aquaculture Health Program Standards (CAHPS) - Dr. Kathleen Hartman - USAS Webinar
Managing the health of farmed aquatic livestock is an important aspect of any aquaculture business. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), Veterinary Services (VS), in collaboration with the National Aquaculture Association (NAA) with have developed a framework for aquatic livestock health inspection and verification. CAHPS is based on the fundamentals of early detection, targeted surveillance, and risk-based biosecurity practices to ensure livestock health and provide confidence that the health status of the livestock is accurate and protected. Participants in CAHPS develop their own livestock health and biosecurity plans based on the needs or requirements for live animal movement, trade, or marketing. CAHPS is a voluntary health improvement program designed to help farmers reduce the burden of repeated health testing and ensure biosecurity practices are adequate to prevent the introduction of unwanted pathogens.
Kathleen Hartman is a senior staff veterinary medical officer with USDA APHIS Veterinary Services Aquatic Animal Health Commodity Center. She received a master’s from the University of Maryland, College Park (fish nutrition) and both a DVM and Ph.D. (aquatic animal pharmacokinetics) from Virginia Tech. She has served on the Professional Standards, Technical Standards and the HROC Committees of the American Fisheries Society-Fish Health Section and was a certified AFS FHS Fish Health Inspector. She has served on the American Veterinary Medical Association’s (AVMA) aquatic animal medicine committee and food safety committee for multiple terms. She is a current member of the World Aquaculture Society (WAS) and is a Past President of the U.S. Aquaculture Society (USAS).

    Great video. I would love to add this system to my grow beds. Aquaponics. Just trying to understand. Movement of water is only done by regenerative blower? No pumps?

    • @clinedj1
      @clinedj1 Před 5 měsíci

      That is correct water movement in the pond is created by the airlifts. There are some systems that use a suction from a water pump to "vacuum" solids from the bottom of the raceway and put them into a settling tank outside of the pond. The once the solids settle, the clear water can be used in aquaponics. You can find an In-pond raceway manual at ussec.org/ussec-in-pond-raceway-systems/

    Which material we can use for water filtration in this system

    • @clinedj1
      @clinedj1 Před 11 měsíci

      In the mechanical filter we use foam filter material. See 1:30 - 1:40 in video. Just make sure the foam has not been treated with any chemicals. In the biological filter (plant tank) this unit has expanded clay balls or "hydrotons" but you can also use pea gravel.

    Is it safe to eat it with the yellow ish color?

    • @clinedj1
      @clinedj1 Před rokem

      Thanks for you question. Yes, these fish are perfectly healthy and safe to eat, yellow and all. The yellow color comes from higher levels of carotenoids and astaxanthins stored in the fattier tissues of the fillet. Some astaxantins are actually sometimes taken as health supplements. We are not seeing much of the yellow fillet these days. We think it may have been due to some additional yellow corn in the feed or the catfish consuming shad in the ponds that were filter feeding on the algae and accumulating the pigments.

    Hi, Thank you for the amazing presentation. I have a few questions. And I have already read the manual. 1. We know the minimum economically viable size for iPRS is 10,000m3. However, for smaller ponds let's say 1000m2 with a depth of 3m, sometimes it might be more productive with a raceway system than any existing approaches. For the smaller pond like 3000m3, what could be the width and height of a raceway cell and QZ that offers good muscle exercise for the fishes and offer efficient waste cleaning? 2. For a 3000m3 water body, how much air should we have to supply to the WWUs? 3. If someone wants to increase the depth of their pond to let's say 5m, just using two WWUs with the chimney effect will be sufficient? 4. Different species and sizes of fingerlings require different water flow rates. Is there any suggestion from you on how we can adjust the speed of the flow based on multiple species on the SAME raceway cell (they are in different confinement areas in the same raceway cell) Thanks in advance.
