Bury Hydraulic Group (BHG)
United Kingdom
Registrace 10. 12. 2008
Hello and welcome to the Bury Hydraulic Group’s CZcams Channel. Here you will find short clips of engineering jobs which we all hope you find interesting.
The main reason for starting this channel is to share my love for old British Rail diesels and railways in general. My spare time is normally taken up down at the East Lancashire Railway depot. Here I have made some fantastic friends who all share the same drive to keep some of our railway heritage alive.
At the railway I focus on 4 locomotives which form the Bury Hydraulic Group. In our fleet we have a Class 14 (D9531), Class 35 ‘Hymek’ (D7076), Class 42 Warship (D832) and Class 52 Western (D1041).
Here you'll find in-depth project videos on restoration of loco components, running of the locos and anything else which I come across! My ambition is to develop the channel to feature casting, tempering, welding, TIG welding, milling, lathe work and thread cutting. However the workshop needs developing!

Hello everyone, The time has come to look ant Western Prince D1041 and return this loco back into traffic. This is a huge project for such a small team so please don’t expect this loco to be hauling trains anytime soon. It is hoped to have the loco back working at some point but as with all railway items, money is always a battle and actual people to carry out the work so please help where you ...

One of the original Romanian built Locos then extensively modified by BR at Doncaster. Is this one still running a Paxman 16Cylinder?
Thanks a lot for making these videos, as a member of the C56G it makes me incredibly happy to see support for 006!
It’s not our bag but we can’t sit back when another group needs help
I was there when the blower burnt out , it smelled absolutely horrible😂
Was a horrible smell and sad for the group. They deserve some good luck. All the best from the BHG!
Beautiful looking diesels of all classes
It’s going to be great at the ELR summer gala doing full line brave van rides
I remember this gorgeous beast coming to an ELR gala with 47 406 (the sapper) . It will be good to see it fixed.😊
I think loads are waiting to see the loco return
All news to me 😂 this is why I ain't a member of the group anymore since it was formed in 1992! No info whatsoever only a twenty page, three times a year magazine with nothing more than a few fuzzy photos and news that is months old on the colas & DCR locos. Even the secretary of the group couldn't even reply to my emails!
I suggest you take this up with the loco group. Our locos are D9531, D7076, D832 and D1041. These are our bread and butter plus we love’em! 56 really ain’t our thing but we can’t sit back and see another group suffer. I’d suggest you might be better getting involved in a group and steer them in the right direction 😂😂
In my opinion they should have moved to a more centralised railway such as the GCR or the Severn Valley etc , where some cover could be provided to keep it dry & work under cover. Perhaps such a move might have attracted some ex BR fitters from Toton / Tinsley who would have been interested in providing their skills. The group should have used social media to appeal for people to come forward then surely it wouldn't have got in this state.
While I appreciate your input, your comments are not only misguided but also disrespectful to both the ELR and the 56 owning group. The locomotive is currently undergoing extensive work inside at the loco works by highly skilled ex-BR fitters and a gang of current 56 mainline fitters. Although the BHG doesn’t focus on the 56 class due to our preference for hydraulics, we actively support the 56 group (and any other loco group…but draw the line at steam!) with technical expertise, spare parts, and labour whenever needed. Our collaboration with the SVR is strong, and at the ELR, our locomotives are well taken care of and are undercover all year round. During our visit for the gala, undercover accommodations simply weren’t feasible as they don’t have the facilities to store locos inside. They have the smashing TMD but we have the loco works which any loco can use. So, thanks for your suggestions, but we’ll be continuing our efforts without them.🙂
I sure hope it can -another star attraction!!
Aswell as fuel filters, id check injectors too. Looks like you guys are doing a mint job, keep up the good work!
Fingers crossed it runs!
Powerful locos, we had a few at Westbury in BR days pulling 2500 ton stone trains.
A bit ironic that 56031 Merehead (one of the Yeoman locos displaced by the very first UK EMDs) now has an EMD engine!
good luck
Many thanks.
well done, I worked on these from new at Canton, did twelve engine rebuilds in 18 months. Make sure the start contactors are in good condition and check rotation of any electrical machines removed when refitting .
I’m sure the Class 56 group and all the other diesel groups would massively appreciate your help and experience with these locos. Experience and knowledge is key with these old BR machines.
Good work guys. Keep it up. Classic loco
Thanks mate, Please come along to the ELR to support our gala.
hi there, have they checked the piston rings and the valves. is the pump getting full throttle ? or has this loco had a hard time and needs a full engine re- rebuild ?
Honestly can’t comment as I’m not directly involved with the group but sure they would appreciate your help. The power issue is electrical related as there is an earth fault.
Is it true the test run is Tormorrow?
Thanks for your comment No not tomorrow - first the traction motor blower would need to be replaced.
@@J0nnyGTcheers pal
@@J0nnyGT do you think you’ll be able to get it working in time for the diesel gala, and how many traction motor blows is the normally on a class 56 BTW good luck fixing it. I hope everything goes well.
@@westcosttrains it’s a big ask to be totally honest but we will do our best. The loco has two motors (from memory 🤪) and the no.2 end decided it didn’t want to play. Not a massive issue changing it but the power fault could be the show stopper. We are helping as best we can with the C56G but we also need to prep our locos for the gala! Time is not on our side but you can help by supporting us by attending the gala.
@@J0nnyGT don’t worry I was going to to gala on the Saturday from the first train to the last train because I the love East Lancashire railway most people under rate the East Lancashire Railway because the diesel gala is apparently bad versus Keighley and Worth Valley and the seven Valley diesel galas but the east Lanks has a special charm and I hope you can get 56006 up and running and I hope you can get the rest of the locos ready and one more question is any of the guest Locos joining maybe from DC rail or any other operators
Excellent subbed
👍🏻👍🏻
I have a question I don’t know if you know but do you know if class 40 145/D345 is going to the ELR diesel gala
This year 145 won't be attending the gala due to engine repairs.
YES🎉
We all really hope it runs

hi, great video, would love to know how its done. ie, do you disconnect the alternator power to the wheels ? just seems like Dr Frankenstein's set up. half expecting Venelda Fielding to turn up.!
Almost - this loco is from the 60s and was fitted with a generator. Basically as you say the outputs (4x traction motors) are disconnected and various loads are placed on the loco to fine-tune everything 😊
@@J0nnyGT I would've thought you'd put in in neutral and do it that way.
MEINE LORDZ 🔥
two things i love about these things. 1) for lubrication of the mechanical kinematics, its most usually simply some oil fountain dripping and an oil catchpan at the bottom, unlike modern lubrications where all of these are encased and look neat and clean. because at the time you're more concerned about getting the engine to actually run rather than making it look nice and clean. 2) the fact that all of these was designed on paper, calculated on paper using abacus or mechanical calculator, then fabricated without numerical control. meaning each part where tolerance is tight, they most likely oversize it, then slowly sand and grind it down to desired size, instead of in the modern era where we simply just cut at desired size due to how accurate our cutting tools are
👍🏻
What's happening to it after the gala as i've heard it's going to be a preserved loco?
We hope so but only time will tell.
Looking good
It's coming together for a great gala
What an absolutely delightful video!
Many thanks

Awesome ain't it! Will be even better go in up Broadfield Bank
These old engines... Their total mechanical beauty and sound always hypnotize me.❤
Great ain't they!
What's with the music? 😄

That looks like a box.
Well that's why they got their nickname ‘Whistling Wardrobe’
My word, that's a quality paint job

Cantankerous old Chopper, coughs snorts whistles and farts before showing signs of life for nothing beats a classic EE start up.
Your eyes almost sting just watching this video
@@J0nnyGT Can smell the hot oil and burnt diesel, despite being a four pot, the old Chopper is just as noisy smelly as its bigger brother, yes cats&kittens a 'Tractor'.
@@basiltaylor8910it's an 8 pot but I agree with the sentiment. Fantastic sounding engine that punches above its weight.
@@MarkGFRex Thought it was, a 4 pot Chopper would be underpowered, 8 EE pots seriously cool, in essence a double 'Thumper ' engine.

Cool video well done!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it. Happy to see so many people still interested in heritage diesel traction.
Thanks for giving us a look at the westerns progress, awesome machines on power, but with a little looking after and you all seem to do its good to know that you can fix that engine. May i ask is the other one ok, or will that need the Bury groups attention too. Thanks for taking time to show us all whats needed.
Thanks for your reply. Which other one do you mean? The BHG have four locos under our care which is more than enough. Work will start on Western Prince however 7076 and 832 both had issues at the last running day so the team will have to work on those before 1041…..AGAIN!
It always amazes me how small those engines look compared to the English Electrics to which I’m more accustomed. Keep up the good work chaps, you know it’s worth it!!
These are very small engines but remember they are similar to the Deltic in the sense they are high-speed diesel engines so you get the high HP output. If your ever at the ELR you much come and look at the engines as the build was years ahead of anything the other manufacturers were producing. Much easier to work on than any Sulzer or EE lump
hi, great video, can you still get the parts for the engine ? good luck
Hi Peter, You can get some parts from the manufacturer who is now MTU. However these come with an eye-watering pricetag. Luckily these engines were mass produced and we do have a good pool or spares. We’re currently seeking additional spares for our class 14 Paxman engine. If anyone has information regarding a spare engine, please let us know. Cheers
Make sure you give us a thumbs up on the video!
@@J0nnyGT sure will, ! have done now
@@petersmith4455 thanks!!!
Was there really any need for the background music? [and especially at the volume at which it was played]. Otherwise, a great vid.
I'm new to these videos so bare with me
Fantastic work everyone :)
'2924 ELR Diesel Gala'? That's some forward planning.
Well spotted and updated!! Thanks!
Bizarrely, one of my earliest childhood memories is the distinctive noise of the Class 20s serving the East Midlands pits near where I grew up!
hi, yes, hats off to Harry needle and gang for a great job to this loco, hope they put new engine oil in it, who does it belong to ?
Excellent rebuild. That was some rough bearing surface, definitely not well lubed. The difference in thickness between the new red painted bits and the old yellow cab paint was amazing. Years of just paint over !😂. Typical narkey EE start. You have to beat them with a tree like Basil Fawlty before the submit !
Very nice job, and the fresh paint looks mint. Best wishes from Australia 🇬🇧🇭🇲
Thank you! Cheers! Get a plane ticket book and a seat up front will be awaiting! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
It was worth going just for the Hymek yesterday -i love that Maybach throb
Thanks for your kind comment - the Hymek wasn’t behaving at the gala so it will be out of traffic for a time now whilst we get it sorted for the summer diesel gala at the ELR.
@@J0nnyGT Yes i wondered why the Steamer was doing a bit when D7076 was the pilot loco, it performed really well at last years SVR event. I hope you get it sorted and please keep osting the You Tube vids.

Ready for the western region weekend I will definitely be coming
See you there
You do so well you guys looking after them as you do with such a small team, im just one man and ive 15 Vintage lorries to look after and some of them are always needing attention but its nothing compared to these WR Hydraulics. I was wondering about 'Prince' so its good to see an update and especially the engine side. looking forward to the Diesel Day -and especially the Hymek!
