Connecting a cheap Chinese mixer to the Yaesu FT-991A
In looking for a better way to feed audio from radios into the camera than using a microphone I dug out my old cheap Chinese mixing desk that can run off a USB power supply, I plugged this into the desktop computer so had to use OBS to take a feed from a camera as well as the audio feed for the actual test, the audio feed was done over USB in this video however the mixer has an analogue output so it can in theory connect to the cameras (which are repurposed mobile phones and since upgrading my phone I have put my old phone on to camera duties.

Disabling lone worker mode on Motorola GP3x0 handhelds (re-upload in better quality)

I was using my Motorola GP340Ex to test the transmit and receive of my now very much underused and surplus QYT KT-8900D after reprogramming it (for 2-metres on that radio I used my Wouxun KG-UV6D to test it as this and the Motorola were the only two handhelds I had to hand at the time). Afterwards I had left the GP340Ex powered on when after a while it sounded a loud tone which I thought was th...
A replacement windscreen mount of sorts for the control panel of my Yaesu FTM-400XDE

the windscreen mount for my FTM-400's control panel completely failed a week or so ago so /m operation on 2-metres and 70cm has not been possible, so I picked up a phone mount from B&M for £9 and it seems to fit just fine. I can't confirm if this works with other Yaesu radios with detachable or remote control panels but it certainly works with the FTM-400s, both the XD and D versions as the con...
TTI TCB550 modified to drive deviation meter... update

so an update for the TCB550s modification and the device it is driving, all seems to be working ok. The deviation meter was complete yesterday, though there was a magic smoke incident, my fault for poking at it while it was on with a metal object, it blew a veroboard track like a fuse when it went pop so a blob of solder has since fixed that and a fuse holder will be added when possible. modifying my TTI TCB550 to drive a deviation meter from a discriminator tap

One of the few devices I do not possess is a deviation meter and my TinySA is far too slow measuring deviation so after a little bit of searching online I found a project by an Australian ham for one that uses an FM receiver with a discriminator tap as the audio feed rather than through the normal audio chain. So to this end I modified my TTI TCB550 with a discriminator tap from one of the ICs ...
The internal adjustments of the Moonraker FA5000 CB radio

Having found very little information on it despite its age I had a look at my Moonraker FA5000 to see what is what inside. Either way this thing was the most complicated radio I have ever...
Replacing a broken variable inductor in a York JCB861 CB radio

Programming the Motorola GP340Ex for 70cm

I received the programming cable from Amazon today (21st May) to program the Motorola GP340Ex radio, the Ex versions are ATEX certified so can be used in places with an explosive atmosphere, and are hard limited in power to 1W for this very reason, though this low power is good for battery life. The original software I installed on the VM did not work with this radio so I had to find a newer ve...

Maybe if we reverse engineer the length of the vertical to work out the frequency. It may give us an idea.
I'd go in the shop and ask them and say nice shop. Can I ask what was the antenna for on this building any idea as I'm a ham radio operator 73's de 2E1FUE 😊
I think a lot of hams could benefit from using an audio mixer in the shack. If all the radios were connected they could mute or change the volume on any rig from one place. The tone controls are helpful too. In my living room I have my TV, scanner, dual band ham rig and FM stereo tuner all connected to a mixer that is right within reach of where I sit The output of my mixer feeds two large studio monitors on either side of my 65 inch TV. I can easily listen to 2 meters or whatever during commercials. I like the idea of using one for streaming. Pretty much any USB mixer will work great as a streaming interface. Mixers are the "swiss army knives" of the audio world.
Hi again! I'm going to the mountains on my summer holidays, do you recommend those walkie-talkies ? Thank you anyway!
Just got one of these a few months ago, cracking little set, may do some packet with it but also SOTA
Has anyone seen any service manuals for em?
@@MarkPentler I haven't found one, most of the service adjustments are done in the software to program them, there are no adjustments inside the radio itself or at least none I could see when I opened the radio up
I remember I had success with this method, but it seems the 262994 talkgroup is no longer operational on BrandMeister servers? I tried today and it didn’t work.

Did you made a review to those radios?
@@zepreto8903 currently a work in progress, should be done soon
PS people are advising not to use the USB charger for regular charging, it's only recommended for emergencies in the manual. I've seen reports of radios burning out when being charged.
Did you mention the plug to Moonraker? I've just bought one from them and it came with the same plug, and I'd bought another Quansheng in the hope that this time it would come with a legal charger.
I don't believe I did, however as the radio can be charged from USB-C I suspect most people will use that option
Hello Sir Paul, your presentation is very informative. I am not being able to view your previous video, as furnished in the video description, where you have programmed BF-888s for PMR 446.
Can you please let me know what driver should I use for the USB to Serial cable? Thank you so much
The way I did this as I was running Windows in a virtual machine on a Linux host then no driver was required as the virtual machine was set up so the cable appears to Windows as just a serial port and Linux doesn't need any drivers for these cables as it comes with them, the cable I used is a prolific one so if used on a computer running Windows it may need the older prolific drivers if it doesn't work when plugged in at first
@@PaulMcGeeM0WNUthanks for the reply Paul. I’m using it on an old computer with Windows XP and when I plug the cable it isn’t able to install or find the driver, so I’m on a dead end. I also tried in a PC with Windows 7 and the same thing happened
@@MrCacciLLo If the cable has a Prolific chip inside chances are it will not work without using an older driver from around 2007 I think it is, this is because the vast majority of Prolific chips are often identified as fake and the current Prolific drivers in Windows somehow detect this and disable them, what you'd need to do is remove the existing driver, unplug the cable and then install an older one, a quick search around Google (or any search engine) for Prolific old drivers should bring them up
@@PaulMcGeeM0WNU Thank you so much Paul, at the moment the only way Windows XP or Windows 7 recognized the cable was by installing a driver called CH340, Windows recognizes it but the Motorola CPS software is not able to communicate with the radios (tried 3 of them). I don't know what Chip is inside the cable, I will try some Prolific drivers like you suggested. Thank you so much
Hi I have just bought the thunderpole T-2000 I don't drive so what the best way to wire it to the power pack as it has a cigarette lighter plug would I need to put an inline fuse on the cable or can you buy a cigarette lighter plug adapter with three pin so I can the mains cheers for any help great video
If there is no fuse holder on the power cable you will need to fit one if you remove the cigarette lighter plug, some power supplies do have a cigarette lighter socket on them as well as the normal red and black terminals

Nice one Paul, i was trying to get back to you tonight but the burner brigade were making things difficult. Keep up the good work 👍 Glenn
Yeah, I was struggling with the burner brigade as well, moreso when I was at the top of the hill in Richmond, nice to hear you on anyway 🙂
Definitely brought back some memories Paul as the 861 was my first ever CB Radio in or around 1983, i did the exact same thing using my dad’s all steel specs screwdrivers on a couple.😁
Cool
Paul, you're so genuine, mate. Determined, enthusiastic, and a great joy to watch. Thank you Sir.
Nice one Paul glad you got them programmed up 🙂👍
It's just the one of these radios I have got, the programming software does have a lot in it to get your head around but once you have it's not too difficult, I can report it works well with both the speaker mic and the internal mic
Fantastic job. Those little nano VNAs (and the Tiny SAs) are awesome bits of kit. Good stuff. Thanks for the upload.
I agree about the NanoVNA and the TinySA, both great bits of kit, certainly worth the money, I am thinking of upgrading to the ones with the bigger screens when finances permit
I'm looking forward to seeing this. I've always wanted one for its portability. Be nice to hear your updated opinions, Paul.
indeed, hopefully I can get that done very soon, I like these little radios as well, the T-600 is about £70 at time if writing, however Moonraker have a Jopix version for about £40 right now and the PNI 6500 for about £10 more, so with these radios it is best to shop around, the Thunderpole is somewhat unique though in having direct access to AM and FM in CEPT when programmed for UK use
That looks like a CB radio I have, the PNI Escort HP 6500. Unfortunately, mine decided to malfunction, sending lots of noise on AM, but emits well on FM. It could be the supply. There are many lookalikes distributed by different brands, but they are all the same.
They're all the same radio, yes, just with different branding and different firmware programmed into them, I believe they're made by a Chinese manufacturer called Nanfone, the T-600 is the only one of these that I am aware of that is set up properly for the UK channels, I have also got a PNI variant as well, I would also suggest that if you're getting noise on AM during transmit and think it is the power supply to try ruling it out by running the radio off a battery
@@PaulMcGeeM0WNU In my case, the power supply is not the issue. It could be related to that, but an internal supply issue. For instance, internal excessive voltage drop due to a defective PPTC, or something like that. Unfortunately, I would need the schematic, and I'm not able to find it.
@@bloguetronica I've not seen a schematic for these either, chances are the manufacturer has them but won't release them without the requirement to sign a non-disclosure agreement, which in my opinion goes against the whole right to repair thing
Nice find Paul 🙂👍
Have you got the software Paul?
I have the 320's and as long as you have the software, they can be set for PMR446. Worked well in the clubs with headsets. Can't remember exactly, but think they kicked out 4w. Good, rugged radios...battery life wasn't as good as they are today
Looks robust, 'they don't make them as they used to'. Where was it made?
Not sure where it was made as the label with that information has faded from age, I agree it is robust
Interesting, but with respect, PMR446 licence-free equipment is granted that status on the provision that the erp is limited and only the supplied aerial is used. Whilst I fully understand your desire to experiment with this band and equipment, you will get very similar results for the 70cms band which is of course within the Amateur Licence remit. I am also licened as a G0.
I draw your attention to page 6 of this document www.ofcom.org.uk/__data/assets/pdf_file/0025/85156/ir_2009_analogue_and_digita1.pdf. I also draw your attention to the fact that this video was solely on reception testing, NOT a transmit test, this same antenna could easily be connected to a suitable SDR receiver, from what I understand a receiver does not need to meet the approval of the band it is being used on as it is not transmitting, yes the radio used here is capable of transmit but this was not the point of the video at all
@@PaulMcGeeM0WNU All noted and thanks for the link to the document. Yes I fully understand about you using the aerial for receive only, but do you really believe that other won't use similar "experiments" to increase the ERP of their transmitters thereby making them non-compliant?
@@125brat I know people will try that yes, and that is their choice to do, I am not here to stop them
Does that old Realistic Crystal Scanner still work?
It's a bit temperamental
Hi Paul, great video. I've recently made a j pole for 446. It looks like a slim sireo cx 440. I made it with a stud mount and a 48cm whip with an alluminium tube shielding the first 16cms. It works surprisingly well with low swr on 446 and 70cms aswell 👍
Hi Paul, great video just for the walk. Could suggest placing the antenna on the outside. The reason in double glazing has a gas which reflects and dumbs down frequencies, giving poor reception. Also the aluminium framing can effect it. Worth a shot.
Might be worth a go, and it would be easy to get it on the outside as that window opens inwards
I’m trying to do similar with a pan adapter just like HF aftermarket rigs
Put a resister
All could lost re usb c charging, some units do not charge through it. It’s in the manual.
Good stuff. I always enjoy seeing a new CB related video on the channel. Unfortunately, my local area has gone quiet on the CB radio front after someone borrowed a CB radio, didn't return it, sold it, then the new buyer said the radio was faulty and couldn't get his money back...and boom! That was the beginning of the end for that particular group of around 8 to 10 CB users. A mass fall out and radio silence ensued. Oh, well, not to worry. New and old CB radio operators continue to come and go, and the worldwide skip has been OK for the most part on SSB, so I keep switching on and having a go just like I always have since I was a kid in 1991. Anyway, I just wanted to say thank you for the new video and for all the past and future updates and to wish you well, so best wishes, and thanks again!
Hi Paul, glad you got the antenna sorted. All the best for setting up the Midland 3001👍
Good effort Paul. Looking forward to the follow up
