My whole life I've enjoyed exploring the backcountry from snowy glaciers to the highest peaks. As I get older I start to take them a little more seriously into new areas of the world - never leaving my camera gear behind so I can share some of these awesome adventures.
FLYING THE TOTAL ECLIPSE
I anticipated this event for years. I swore to not miss it but I also had challenges finding 1) a place along the path of totality and 2) a place within that with flyable weather. In the end it was absolutely perfect. It was out of this world to witness it --- out of our world. The stars aligned and I couldn't be happier.

Legally speaking, you can fly an ultralight up to 30 minutes after sunset if you have proper strobe lights. I wanted to try blasting so much light that it was downright silly, and yes, I discovered that it was awesome! So bright that it diminished the strobe lights I had. I got tears in the eyes seeing this! This was amazing! I saw the eclipse as well, but I was in Missouri and on the ground.

It's always great to see another Southwell video! Your eclipse story and mine are very similar! I had no idea which town I was going to go until Sunday morning so I'd have the least clouds and best wind. Bloomington Indiana was one of my choices but ultimately went with Fairfield, Illinois because the forecast models looked slightly better. I'm about to post my full eclipse trip in the next day or two. Blue skies, my friend!

Nice video but Texas wasn’t a bust. The clouds weren’t a problem and several guys flew.

Really breath taking views. Really makes me want to go and see it myself. Can't really do anything like this but certainly could manage any Cessna high wing there. Probably not as quiet as the Paragliders. Mostly E or G airspace?
