I went there last Sunday with my husband and brother in law just after it rained . It is so pretty especially with all the extra waterfalls after it rained .I did the Butterbox Point loop track . The view of the valley with a winding river is also beautiful . You have to drive on a dirt track road in Leura . You drive through bushes then suddenly , you are driving on the road which winds around the plateau and you can see the whole valley . There is no fencing and only has a handful of people . The beauty is so raw !

As a person that lives here, It's interesting to see people being so fascinated by a place that is everyday life for us. Another thing is, because it is such a small Island, you kinda just know every location off by heart. There wasn't a single place in the video that I haven't seen. (I know it's creepy, but I can even work out where the place you were staying is)

If you go to Indonesian Kalimantan, you will see different face of Borneo. In malaysian kalimantan maybe you saw big cities, fancy building, etc.. but in Indonesian Kalimantan, you will see mostly forest, traditional villiages, and small cities. Especially in Central Kalimantan where I live now.. here we don't have many fancy buildings except hotels.. many foreigners come here just to learn about wildlife nature or working with UN WWF. Some maybe because of bussines. But, the peoples are very kind and warm..

So glad to discover you found and 'experienced' Trunyan Chloe. Your manner of speaking about it aligns you with me in that my interest and fascination with such an obscure and marginalized segment of Bali Aga aboriginal Balinese society draws me where most foreign visitors dare not go. Of those few that dare go..... most speak in complete negativity of the experience and would recommend it to no one. While it is certainly ranks as one of the 'darkest' places i've ever been, it equally ranks as one of the most fascinating and it's certainly a noteworthy experience on my extensive travel resume. Though my own travel to Trunyan cemetery was over 20 yrs ago, in my minds eye I remember every single visual detail of each face of an ancient man and a woman, each adrift in their own canoe in close proximity to the cemetery boat dock, (the wooden canoe being customary for those nearing death). Both were grossly emancipated due to age and obviously very close to death but oddly still very much alert.... even outwardly vibrant and joyous in facial expression, and physically mobile within the confines of their tiny boats. It's impossible to describe what I felt in words, but it was a once in a lifetime moment that I am eternaly grateful to have experienced, from a perspective of both spiritual and the intellectual. I speculate that the ease in which you were able to travel to Trunyan is indicative that things have changed greatly since I was there in '99/2000. In those days travel to Trunyan was not only discouraged, but the local Kintamani tourist authority had banned any and all boat transport via lake Batur to the cemetery for tourists due to extreme and overt agressive tactics of opportunistic Trunyans. (Among other things, it had become common practise for boat transport operators to abandon their customers at the cemetery and leave the boat dock as soon as their paid supposed 'round trip' passengers had disembarked. The result being, the stranded visitors having to pay whatever price demanded by any village boat owner willing to make the return trip across the lake .) Local Trunyan accomodation did not exist, and the alternative of spending the night in the cemetery (can you imagine? -lol) saw tourists readily willing to pay whatever was asked to get themselves off 'skull island.' I wasn't prepared to be stalwarted by a simple travel restriction and with assistance from a Kintamani born Balinese friend, we arranged for our own transport via lake Batur. I'm not sure if you are aware, but the Trunyan's are considered Bali - Aga and are actually quite aloof from the rest of Balinese society. Balinese tour operators frequently sugar coat such things, but to be blunt, the Balinese regard theTrunyan/Balinese as a centuries old culture of beggars & thieves. The Trunyans themselves are equally as proud of that heritage as the rest of the Balinese are aghast. While I doubt your short visits to Bali afforded you the opportunity to see it yourself, many of the Trunyan mothers of babe in arms infants are actually transported daily to the downtown streets of Denpasar and a small area of Poppies Lane I in Kuta to beg for money. As it is actually ochestrated as a group organization where the 'proceeds' are turned in to their handlers, it is an example of Indonesian grassroots level mafia. While perhaps not as readily visible in Yogyakarta, (more so in Semarang) I assure you the same type of mafia control is true for traffic light entertainers/vendors and/or beggars on the streets of boths cities, and slightly out of view in the small alleyways during the myriad of Saturday night festive gatherings in the downtown Universities district streets. My collective Bali 'experiences' affected and influenced me so greatly that I became a seasonal resident Bali ex-pat for over a dozen consecutive years. I've never embraced the 'tourism' aspect during my Bali roamings and instead embraced the culture and genuine hospitality of the Balinese. Even though I've actively participated in literaly hundreds of Balinese ceremonies, I would still always prefer to attend any Bali-Hindu ceremony over ANY tourism related activity. My extensive travels off the beaten path in Bali and Java pre-dated hand phones having still or video camera capabilities, but fortunately I travelled everywhere with a then state-of-the-art Sony digital video camera that went everywhere I did.... including Trunyan cemetery! Thank you Chloe.... your video has brought back to mind one of many among my favourite moments. There's something very unique about you that is conveyed in your video Chloe. It is the sincerity and depth of interest in the Balinese which is quite uncommon even among long time repeat visitors to Bali. The fact that you have that attribute with having spent such little time/experience in Bali is highly commendable. Such to the degree that I feel compelled to suggest that if possible, you should dig even deeper into the Balinese culture as a point of personal and/or professional interest in to what I've come to know as the most rewarding and satisfying culture, rich in attributes that do not exist in our 'western' cultures. While any time of year is a good time to go back to Bali, as like minded to you...I highly recommend you to experience the high-Balinese ceremonies of Galungan - Kuningan, Melasti... the public ceremony festivities with thousands of participants that upon conclusion culminates on all Bali beaches, The Ogoh-Ogoh ceremony preceding on the evening before Nypei day. Also any Balinese-Hindu cremation ceremony that I regard as the absolute polar opposite of our western equivilants. During my infancy of Balinese culture, my 'western sensibilities' almost prevented me from attending my first ever Bainese cremation of a family member of people I had absolutely no connection to whatsoever. While I was the only white skinned visitor and completely unknown to anyone, I was greeted and ushered into the cemetery and welcomed by all in what I can only describe as a celebratory festival with almost a 'carnival' like atmosphere. Not for one moment did I ever feel I was out of place and countless numbers of people politely approached me to make sure I felt welcome. Many voluntarily escorted me around to explain the myriad of simutanious activities taking place in the full day cremation ceremory that reaches conclusion on the nearest beach just before sunset. I've long ago lost count of how many cremation ceremonies I've since attended and would never turn down the opportunity to attend more. Regarding Bali and it's inhabitants, the only word of caution I'm compelled to share from personal experience (and that of others like-minded) is the 'magic' of Bali for the fortunate few who truly have the ability to embrace it.... can quickly become infectious to the point of need. I am Canadian born and raised, yet since my years in Bali I've felt alienated to my own culture and society. Somewhat confusing at times, but whenever I left Bali to seasonally return to Canada I always experienced a very long period of 'reverse culture shock', best described in analogy of stepping out of a life in vibrant technicolour and returning home to a life of 'black & white'. Well now, before I've turned this epic into a chapter and verse book, in closing I'll express my gratitude to you for the role you've unknowingly played in the determination of my (Bali born) son's university of choice for the overseas component of his undergraduate studies in International Relations at UGM. One more year of Canadian highschool before we strategize those logistics, but your "exchange student at UGM" video was exremely instrumental in making the decision. I have no idea as to why your unsolicited UGM video popped up out of nowhere in my Y/T feed but I knew on conclusion of your excellent video presentation we had found the right school. The bonus for me as your most recent new subscriber has been to discover your 'connection' to Bali via your Y/T channel content. One valuable lesson Bali taught me is not to question such things that are 'just meant to be'. What we can't quantify in our western culture is often referred to as 'intuititive.' In the Balinese - Hindu culture it has a far greater meaning in all avenues of day to day life. My best regards to you Chloe.
