While nobody denies that Serena is among the most powerful and athletic women ever to play her sport, these attributes alone do not bring success in a technical sp...

    Isn’t it incredible how Federer is the only one in this video to actually reach all of the returns? It took Blake two or three shots to actually finish him…

    It only counts for one point. Every shot only counts for one point. What a stupid thing to say, Tracy Austin. I bet any one of those other women would love to have a 125mph serve.

    Federer’s one handed backhand is better after all he has won 20 GSs while Henin has won only 7GSs and not on all surfaces. She was more like a clay court player.

    • @captainbryce1
      @captainbryce1 Před 3 měsíci

      Yeah, from a technical standpoint there really wasn't much wrong with his game. He had outstanding technique on his forehand, his serve, backhand, and volley were all good, and his speed and athleticism was top echelon. If we compare him to a player like Federer, to me it looks something like this: Federer could essentially do everything that Blake could do, only more consistently. Blake had an outstanding forehand; Federer had the BEST forehand. Blake had a good one-handed backhand; Federer had a BETTER one-handed backhand. Blake was a competent volleyer; Federer was one of the BEST volleyers. Blake had an above average serve; Federer had one of the TOP serves. The only two things I think Blake did better was probably speed (although Federer had better footwork and court positioning which cancels that out), and return of serve. Blake's return was more of a weapon, although Federer was able to put bigger serves back in play more often. So really, Federer from a technical standpoint was slightly better than Blake in every aspect of the game that mattered. But that doesn't explain their career results in my opinion. The real reason Federer was a superior player is because he was the superior strategic thinker. He had enough confidence in the game versatility that he could change tactics between opponents (or even in the middle of a match) and go to plan-b, or even plan-c if necessary. Blake had no plan-b ever! He only knew one speed in tennis, FAST! He tended to play flat strokes with high-risk margins that would lend itself to lots of winners and lots of errors. His biggest problems were his stubbornness and lack of mental toughness. And I think a lot of that has to do with the fact that he had a very gung-ho, go-for-broke style of play that was spectacular when he was on, but detrimental when he wasn't. He was stubborn in the sense that he never altered his tactics (even when they weren't working). And if memory serves, he's also never won a 5-set match before, which to me speaks of a lack of mental toughness and confidence. Even that type of statistic gets in your head when you're in the moment. Federer never got down on himself when he was playing, even when it was match point down. When the wheels started to fall off for Blake, there was no recovery. And while Federer had gone through many coaches during his prime, Blake stuck with the same coach throughout his entire career and I think that really hurt his chances for growth and improvement. It's too bad he never got a different coach, otherwise I think he could have achieved more before retiring. That's not to say that his coach was bad or anything, and I understand loyalty, but sometimes you need a new perspective or fresh ideas to incorporate. And Blake never added anything new.

    WOOWW That was truly a very CRASS statement. What the hell, information was Mary Carillo going by? By that time 2005, Serena had multiple grand slams titles, both singles & doubles AND a grand slam mixed doubles. (2 Serena Slams & Olympic doubles GOLD) Maria never came anywhere near those records, in grand slam trophies, Olympic gold. Neither 2005 nor 2023.

    I believe other than her sister Venus, her toughest opponent was Ms. Justine Henin, who gave her many challenging matches. They both were always very dominant, had great movement, power, shots, and sportsmanship. I think the difference was Serena's serve, which will be missed, as it is/was UNPREDICTABLE and a force to be reckoned with.

      Serena is somewhat like Chris Evert and her sister (Venus) who reminds me of Martina Navratilova whom both volleyed so much to offset the serve/play of the opponent (Serena/Evert).

    Steffi Graf is the queen of comebacks. 1) She won 4 slam finals even though her opponent had served for the match (FO 87, Wim 91, FO 96, FO 99). 2) She won 2 slam finals against Navratilova after trailing her 57 02 (Wim 88) and 36 24 (USO 89) respectively. 3) She beat Novotna in the famous Wim 93 final with Jana 4-1 in the lead in the 3rd, serving. 4) And MJ Fernandez led her 43 (serving) in the 3rd in the FO 93 final. When Serena was down in slam finals she usually folded like a cheap tent. To even COMPARE Steffi and Serena regarding their comeback qualities is an insult to the great German. But such is the current nationalistic woke culture in the USA. Sad!

    I trained with him when I was also one of nick Bolletieri’s protégés in 1985 and his backhand then was his best shot apart from his speed on the court. He definitely became a much better player in time and truly has the best two handed backhand and best return of serve (both sides) than anyone. He became a legend. I’m so proud of him. Rock on Andre
